I wish I could help, Alex. I’ve got enough maintenance headaches with the few caches I have. I can’t imagine what you must go through. It’s hard staying on top of all that stuff and I wish I had some great advice or insight but I guess these headaches are all just part of the delight of being a cache owner. Don’t know what to tell you. 😕

I know exactly what you mean. My I-39 🙂 cache (GC18WME) always ends up right in plain sight…
Until someone breaks off the locking tabs. Oh, who could that be? 😳
Could this possibly be the most frequently seen cache in Wisconsin? I saw it too last weekend 🙂
Yup, notifications and PQ results. When I ask the tech guys at Groundspeak they say “E-mail is running a little slow, you should receive them soon” Hogwash… still never received them.

… you’re a geocacher.
…. you and some of your friends create a 5 page forum thread about being addicted to geocaching.

I just submitted 2 new “ALS” (Additional Logging Suggestion) caches for review. Much more fun than ALR. ALR is sooo 2008. ALS is the ALR for 2009. 🙂

No no! ALR = Additional Logging REQUEST. It’s like computers -cheeto-. We just rebrand the acronym.
I quite like ALRPPWSCASOT (Additional Logging Request, Pretty Please With Sugar, Cherries, and Sprinkles On Top!)
Another Bulletin! West Side Tasty Treat (Best Soft Serve ice cream in town IMO) is offering every CITO participant a 10% discount with the mention of the event. PLUS a 10% off coupon for your next visit. There will be a temp cache located at the ice cream shop to make it easy to find.
UPDATE (and bump I guess): We are well underway with plans for the CITO event and it looks like it’s going to be alot of fun. We’ve got the areas officially selected that we will be CITOing and most are within walking distance of base camp, though walking is not necessary.
We’ve got a great selection of prizes and there will be even more than what’s listed on the cache description. The afternoon will have lots of opportunities to team up and do some cache tours or general caching. The company will be great so if you don’t have plans for May 2nd, mark the CITO on your calendar and come join us! [GC1N3AC]
The temp caches are coming together and there are some clever ideas coming to fruition. No doubt you will be entertained. There will also be some new permanent caches coming out in town around that time period. The parks we will be in also feature permanent caches that you can grab while you’re there if you haven’t already.
So that’s the news for now. I also hear that baby Zumette is going to make her first event appearance. That will be exciting 🙂 She’ll probably have her Garmin in one hand and a bottle in the other!
Thanks everybody… I’ll keep you posted.
I had 1 cache that had an ALR: The log had to include a haiku. Really, it was a traditional cache but becuase it had and ALR, using the type of “Mystery” or “unknown” was a work around becuase there was not such thing as a cache type of “ALR” so when the ALR became optional, the whole reason for the cache being “?” went away. There was really never a good reason for it being a “?”, but was the best option. Really, it was always a traditional cache except for the haiku requirement.
In this case, I don’t think it’s “messing up” stats but changing it to a traditional… if anything it’s “correcting” stats becuase it never was a mystery, puzzle, or unknown to begin with.
So regarding the decision to flip to trad. or not, I guess it’s probably a case by case thing, considering the true nature of the cache and what how ALR effected the design, the hide, and the experience of the cache.
IMHO, but I KNOW I’m right 😉 .
BTW, where are those cool dead horse beating animated gifs that we saw a while back? Those were fun 🙂

By making the ALRs optional will certainly dilute the experience of some caches out there but I also have a feeling that a lot of geocachers out there will take on that optional challenge and thus gain the full value of these caches.
Sorry for piping in late but labrat is absolutely right. If the ALR is worth doing, it will be done. If it’s overly-lame or a waste of time, then it will get skipped. This change might actually IMPROVE the sport (rather than diluting it) by causing cache designers to put more thought into their OLR’s (optional logging requirements) to make them interesting and enjoyable. Though I’m unfamiliar with most of Alex’s ALR caches, they seem to be interesting enough to want to do the additional things anyway and tell about them in the log. Maybe that’s the kind of example people will look to as they develop “requirements” going forward.
Ummm… well, I tried 😉 Wish I could come. Apparently I have other plans that day.. if you catch my drift.
Would love to come… seeing if I can work it out.
Is that a whiff of 2k? Oh, I mean 2E10+3
I have no words. I am in utter and complete amazement.
