If you just need a case to store the Ipod in to protect it, these are great and reasoanbly priced – they come in various sizes.

Just do a search for Pelican Case on google.

I think this new game has some merit, particularly because of what I’ve been reading in the “what will kill the game” thread. It’s obvious that there are alot of people out there playing the geocaching game that find aspects of the game “tedious” and not in-line with the area of the game they enjoy. geocaching, although typically done individually or in very small groups, is a highly social game. The social aspects are shared primarily through logs (written and on-line), forums such as this, and at events. There is a “sharing” aspect to the game that alot of people enjoy and feel are an integral part of the game.

It’s become obvious however that many do not want to play the game that way and have no fondness for that aspect. I think we’ve seen this in the “TFTC” logs, the “.” logs, the aggravated owners, etc. Munzees are a great solution to the geocacher who wants the numbers, doesn’t care to interact with others playing, but wants to get out and do something. To be honest, I’d rather have them leave and go do that than aggravate active and participatory geocahers.

I’ve often heard people say “play the game how you want to” and to a certain degree it’s good to have that kind of flexibility in the game – when there’s something for everyone to love. But when and if flexibility stretches too far and deviates from the nature of what the game is (i.e. being numbers driven instead of experience driven) then you end up with people who have been participating for a long time getting very frustrated and upset. I get the feeling from the “what will kill the game” thread that many people feel that the flexibility has gone too far. If offering an alternative to geocaching let’s those people go off and have their own game, then that sounds like a good thing.

Besides the numbers, it seems like Munzees might have a few other special things up their sleeves – like prizes for the FTFers and different special themed munzees – execution may prove to be difficult with that but if they can pull it off it will be another attractive aspect to the game that GC cannot offer.

While I am merry to let those dissatisfied with the “tediousness” of geocaching to go have their own game, it’s real easy to get to the point of advocating a separate game for every aspect of the game (i.e. puzzle solving, earth caches, etc.) and I’m not trying to do that. Just trying to point out that some of the frustration alot of people are feeling MIGHT be somewhat alleviated by this Munzee alternative. Frankly, there are lot of geocaches that may as well just be munzees too. So this may be an alternative for the caches as well as the players.

I’ve done this before with Google Earth and the process isn’t too awkward. I’ll be glad to detail it if you’re interested.

Just hide a cache in a canyon! Use nature’s scrambler!

As much as I hate puzzles, I’d have to say that “National Treasure” would have been a pretty boring movie if Nicolas Cage has the GPS coordinates to the Trinity Church with a clue for which crypt to bash in.

But Benjamin Gates is a genius. I’m not. 😉

WHEW! Wow, what a trip but we made it back. I haven’t even logged my finds yet. We did get to everything on the list but we did see alot of cool places thanks to your recommendations 🙂 We saw cool waterfalls, neat parks, beaches, cliffs, etc. We explored alot of places and took alot of pictures and had a great time! Thanks all for your help! 🙂

    Agreed.

I got an update last night that the request to always separate out the cache / challenge counts is complete. Now when I go to my profile page, I see the 2 grey boxes for Finds and hides but the grey box where it used to say Challenges:0 is gone and there is a blank white space in it’s place. So that’s good.

I also see that on the cache detail page in the logs section, a cacher’s counts are separated and the challenges are not counted toward finds.

On the user profile page, under the Geocaches tab, Challenges are still in the list of cache types and are included with the grand total at the bottom but the total is called “Total Found/Completed” so at least it’s labeled correctly and is the place to go when you WANT to see the combined total if you don’t want to do the math yourself.

So I guess I’d have to say that I’m happy 😕 with the fix – but I still kind of wish that it was completely separate and not integrated with geocaching at all. This whole premise Jeremy mentioned about making the site into a “go somehwere and have fun” site is flawed. Keep geocaching geocaching. Keep waymarking waymarking. It’s great that they’re offering the fun, but when you try to over extend your “brand” you compromise the experience of everyone.

So… who’s going to create the challenges for the WGA picnic 🙂 Just remember these 2 simple rules:
    1. Do whatever you want.
    2. Refer to rule 1.

Don’t worry about duplicating a challenge that someone else has created.
Don’t worry about making it TOO location based and it doesn’t need exact coordinates, anyone with a mobile device should be able to participate. A GPS is NOT required. In fact, they are discouraged.
Don’t worry if you get 50 thumbs down. Give yourself a thumbs up and press on!
Don’t worry if it has no significance whatsoever or if it’s just a silly trick to play on your friends. Jeremy says that’s what challenges are for! Sounds like super hero material to me! 🙄

… Maybe I’m not as happy as I thought. 😈

There’s now a pop-up when you go to the create Challenge page:

    @Groundspeak wrote:

    What makes a good Challenge?

    Location-specific

The location of a challenge should be directly related to the action. “Take a picture of yourself with the Eiffel Tower” is location-specific, while “Take pictures of the night sky in Seattle” or “Find this/a geocache” are not. The goal of Challenges, and Geocaching, is to explore the world around you.

There should only be one location where you can complete the challenge. Worldwide Challenges are only issued by Groundspeak, but you can recommend new Worldwide Challenges on our feedback site

    Straightforward

The Challenge should be easy to understand and not too complicated to do.

    Appropriate

Keep Challenges clean so it reflects the family-friendliness of Geocaching.

    Fun!

Like geocaching, Challenges should be a light and fun activity. Create Challenges that reflect this.

So…….. tell me again why they’re concerned about quality. With such specific and well thought out guidelines like that, how could this go wrong? (Yes, that was sarcasm)

in reply to: Michigan Upper Peninsula "Loop" #1951688

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions! I wish I could visit them ALL!! But I’ve had to choose those that are closest to our route and fit the family’s style. This weekend is the big weekend (actually it’s Monday & Tuesday but we leave tomorrow night) and I’m REALLY looking forward to seeing your recommendations! I’ll try to take lots of photos. I’m sure they’ll be on Facebook for those of you who know me there. I’ll put some here too.

    Thanks again! 🙂

I will NOT be doing http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/view.aspx?cx=CXD37 or http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/view.aspx?cx=CXA8F (Good thing they’re not concerned about duplicate challenges!)
