Stealth? What is that? Kind of hard to be stealthy when you take the dog with you and he listens about as well as the wife and kids do. Not at all.

Your dog gets excited when you grab your GPSr.

You have to spell the word geocache in front of the dog.

If you’re a Woot fan, download their Wootalyzer. It will give you a daily update of several one item sites and pop-ups for the Woot offs.

They have a list of about a dozen or more sites that they monitor in the application including camping, biking and hiking sites. They also add and remove sites from the monitor list to keep it up to date.

I just had the harddrive in my work laptop swapped out and the tech that worked on my laptop had a cord that essentially turned the internal hard drive into an external USB hard drive that he then plugged into onther PC to copy files off of. It had a connector on one end compatible with 2 different types of hard drive connections and a USB on the other for connecting to another PC. Not sure what a cable like that might cost or if you can even get one but it looked pretty handy.

I’ve got one of those at home. It has the interface for Desktop IDE/Laptop IDE/SATA dirves and connects through the USB port. I think it only cost me about $30. I’ve only had to use it a couple times.

If you can only load 20 caches even though you have more on the card, it sounds like something went Fubar with your registration. I beleive 20 is the max that you can load on a unregistered progarm for “testing”

No, it has to be something with the PC writing the file directly to the SD card.

The card has been formated on the palm and I am able to hotsynch the files and then load them into cachemate. I currently have two databases, one contains 220 caches and the other contains 1600.

If I write the .PDB file to the SD card in the computer and then load the SD card into the Palm it will only load 20 of the caches into the database.

    Thanks,

I seem to remember him mentioning that there is a Vista – Palm fix. Maybe in another topic?

Here is a topic that discusses the Palm / Vista issues and a possible fix:

    http://wi-geocaching.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7518

The Vista fix to allow HotSyncing appears to work for most people. The other option, copying the CacheMate .PDB file to a memory card if your Palm device has one, will probably continue to work for a long, long time…

Is there anyplace that has this procedure documented? I just started with the palm and got a 1Gig memory card specifically for this purpose.

I formatted the card on the palm and the card info shows
    33.6 MB Used
    528.4MB Free of 971.6MB

I have the .PDB file with 100 caches in the /Cachemate folder but when I try to rescan the memory card it will only import about 20 caches.

I am sure it has something to do with the Category. I have not found out how to import all categories to Cachemate or how to set the category when exporting from GSAK.

I looked at the sites recommended from CacheMate but they don’t address this.

    Thanks,

You get your query from Geocaching.com, not from GSAK. Set up a pocket query on the site. The site will email it to you. Save the zip file they send you somewhere that you can find it. Run GSAK and File|load the file. Done. (Yes, it is that easy. The harder part is setting up the pocket query to do what you want.)

If you are a Premium Member of course.

True, but I am not aware of too many people using GSAK (or EasyGPS) without pocket queries. It is possible, of course, to download one cache at a time as .LOC files, and then use GSAK to load all the files at once. Its just that by the time you download 20-30 individual cache files (and print out the sheets), you will find that the time spent is worth much more than the Premium membership fee.

I did the manual download without a membership for the last two years. It’s real easy to get a lot of caches down in a little time just going page by page and selecting all to download and the importing all files in a directory into GSAK.

The big problem is that the .LOC files that you get have very limited information. It gives you enough to do paper caching, but you really need to get a membership and pull down the PQs in order to go paperless. Lots of manual data entry to fill in the data gaps if you plan to run the FindStatGen macro in GSAK.

I just picked up a Palm off of eBay ($30) and got the one month membership from GC just to test it out. We are planning a trip to Utah for Spring Break and I didn’t want to carry a ream of paper with possible caches already printed so might as well go paperless. I am planning to get my 200th cache and my first paperless cache this weekend.

in reply to: How do you go paperless? #1901457

Just got shot down last week when I told the wife I wanted to get a used PDA to go paperless. I told her it would be great for spring break in Utah this year but she doesn’t want to spend that much time geocaching while we are there.

    Some people just don’t understand.

Are there bad areas in WI?

Well, we’ve gotten the back window of our van smashed by vandals whilst geocaching…made for an expensive weekend and shook up the kids 😡

I think the log for the Three Monkeys Having Fun cache out in Silver Springs park has an entry or two where the cacher had their cars broken into in the parking lot.

When I was out there earlier this year a guy drovve up to me and warned me about someone up on a hill in his underwear who yelled obsenities at him as he was walking his dog. We stayed clear of that area.

    @Team Deejay wrote:

First of all, where you are camping is the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine, not the North. That said, I’d probably skip Bare Escentuals. This cache is wet, nasty, not loggable, and apparently not being maintained by its owner. The earthcaches are all nice, but not really the “geocaching experience”. Also, just across highway 67 is the Scuppernong Trail system, which has a couple very nice multis along with some hikes to traditional caches.

Thanks for the correction. I don’t know the North Kettle from the South and I haven’t had the time to research it properly yet.

We will definitely hit the Scuppernong and see how far we make it up and down the IAT.
