Alternative listing sites are not for everybody. I am merely creating a space to discuss what’s out there for everybody that is interested. Even though a person may choose not to use a site or even agree with it being in existence, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s there and will have an effect on the hobby/sport/game that we all enjoy pursuing.
Some links with info:
http://www.opencaching.com
http://itsnotaboutthenumbers.wordpress.com/
http://www.cachemania.com/tag/opencaching/Looks like the site is changing on a weekly basis. They are on their second slogan/catchphrase and they have also just modified the logo (changing it to brown instead of black.)

What happened to geocaching in the woods where it is supposed to be done. These new opencaching ideas sound like more types of hides that will make cachers look suspicious and jeopardize the game.
I suppose somebody signing a guest book does look pretty suspicious.
It officially “opened” in August of this year. So yup, still pretty new.
Remember though, this is opencaching.us, not opencaching.com. Opencaching.us has no affiliation with Garmin. Although that would be pretty nifty if they did integrate that feature 🙂
I personally like the concept of the dead drop cache type, but am just not sure of the security aspect of it. If I were to ever find one I think I would get a “throw-away” type laptop (ie: under a $100) with absolutely no personal info on it.
Although I guess some of the new netbooks run Ubantu which is Linux based and practically impervious to viruses. It is true that Garmin bought the http://www.opencaching.com domain. All of the existing Opencaching sites use a dot something else.
United States: opencaching.us
Germany: opencaching.de
Poland: opencaching.plYou get the idea. I think the creation date is when the domain was created. I don’t think it has anything to do with when it was last purchased. As far as I know, Garmin just recently acquired it.
So basically a “collectible” coin is one that is activated, but not circulated. Am I getting that right?
I use RoadRunner at home with the latest Firefox, no problems at all.

If they are that good of a cache, cross list them on GC. then they will be easier to post as COTM
Not the point. Not all roads lead to Rome (or in this case GC.) The question is whether this alternative listing site can be integrated in the WGA system.
To be honest, at this point there really isn’t enough unique caches on opencaching to warrant consideration. In fact, of the 21 active caches, there are only seven that aren’t cross listed (or at least indicated as OCUS only caches.) I own four and The Searchers have three. It really might take at least a year for it to get more established in this state.
Play the game the way you want. If it’s no longer fun to own urban caches, no sweat man. It’s all about choice. To me, it just means you are going to work even harder to make quality woodland caches.
Hear, hear!
I think it’s great that we can count on quick action to dangerous circumstances. However, as previously mentioned, budgets and money are a major issue. Something tells me it would have been cheaper and easier to check a web page than sending out the bomb squad.
So pretty much if you couldn’t care less for smart phones or don’t want to drop significant amounts of money every month for web access on a phone, the only way you will find a souvenir is by pure chance. Guess that makes it even less appealing to me.
