  • in reply to: Could someone make me a map? #1933137

I’m not really interested in the Pocket Query itself, just a final output map generated from the data. I don’t even need cache names or designations. All I’m looking for is pins on a map. I can do it myself, it’s just going to take forever and a day to do it 🙁

I have all of the listings for them, just no way to plot the data without manually entering all of the information. I went to earthcache.org and did a search my state. Voila! Similar to a PQ I assume, just not the same format (MS Excel.)

How many online forum group members does it take to change a lightbulb?

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed.

14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently.

7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs.

27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs.

53 to flame the spell checkers.

    41 to correct spelling/grammar flames.

6 to argue over whether it’s “lightbulb” or “light bulb”…another 6 to condemn those 6 as anal-retentive

2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is “lamp”.

15 know-it-alls who claim *they* were in the industry, and that “light bulb” is perfectly correct.

156 to email the participant’s ISPs complaining that they are in violation of their “acceptable use policy”.

109 to post that this group is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb group

203 to demand that cross posting to hardware forum, off-topic forum, and lightbulb group about changing light bulbs be stopped.

111 to defend the posting to this group saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts *are* relevant to this group.

306 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique, and what brands are faulty.

27 to post URL’s where one can see examples of different light bulbs.

14 to post that the URL’s were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL’s.

3 to post about links they found from the URL’s that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group.

33 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add “Me too”.

12 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy.

19 to quote the “Me too’s” to say “Me three”.

4 to suggest that posters request the light bulb FAQ.

44 to ask what is a “FAQ”.

4 to say “didn’t we go through this already a short time ago?”

143 to say “do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs”.

1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again….

Welcome to the fun! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. We know everything 🙂 (or at least we think we do!)

But first I need a new GPSr and a laptop!

Pssh! I used Bing maps and my eye balls. You can’t miss it, what with the big white info sign and the two bright orange witness posts! I would post a pic of the sign, but it would be a give away for the cache.

I still have to get up by you to grab the GEOCAC mark. Sounds like we just need to trade places 🙂

I wouldn’t mind teaming up for a stone mark at all. I’ve just been in touch recently with Merc. Inc from around here. He’s been grabbing a few marks lately, and not easy ones either. Maybe we could have our very own “Benchmarking Event.” If only we could get a special icon for that 😆

Just got this posted to my question in the GC forum:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), an agency in the Dept. of the Interior has the responsibility for producing our national topographic maps. They completed the monumental task of complete national mapping of the 1:24,000 scale map series (about 55,000 maps) in the early 1990’s. USGS would often set survey monuments to help “control” the map. Maps are produced from aeronautical photos mosaiced together. In order to provide accurate location, orientation, scale and elevation to a flat map of a curved surface, it is required to have numerous points that can be identified on the photographs for which the coordinates/elevations are well known. The marks set by USGS were a vital part of this operation. In the days when mapping surveys were conducted primarily by line-of-site methods, these marks helped save money by helping to ensure a network that cartographers could rely on for mapping update procedures. With the rapid developments in surveying and mapping technology, especially GPS, USGS sees little need to setting new marks or maintaining the old networks. Unfortunately the data for tens of thousands of these marks set by USGS were never submitted to NGS for inclusion in the National Spatial Reference System. Due to major reductions in staff and the changing nature of mapping requirements, it is highly unlikely that USGS will ever automate these data

I sure did get the CoP mark. Even ran into a couple of other cachers that were grabbing the info off of it for the associated cache. Ended up being MuddyBottoms and OldlyWeds.
I got some friends when I was cleaning off the mark too. I had pulled some weeds and brushed a clump of dirt away….only it wasn’t a clump of dirt, it was an ant hill! In less than a minute there were at least 50-100 ants all over the marker. you can see a bunch of them in the picture. Usually I’ll dump some water on the disk, then wipe it dry. No wiping on this one 🙂

    TDSG:
I’ve found a few WISDOT marks that aren’t in the NGS database, but this is the first USGS one I’ve found that isn’t. 2/3rds of the marks I’ve found aren’t on GC.

    Astro-D:
I found it in Green Lake County, near Markesan (maybe a quarter mile West of the Center of Population mark.)

in reply to: Recovered my 50th benchmark! #1932958

Just got the Center of Population Benchmark Disk today. Had to avoid an army of ants, but I still made the recovery 🙂

This was the only response I got over there so far:

I would expect the stones to be square and about 6 inches X 6 inches with either a chiseled square/mark or a drill hole in the top.

I like yours better. Nice and vague 🙄

in reply to: Pet Peeves #1908824

Oh, just thought of another one:

People that think it’s a good idea to breed dogs. I’m not talking about official dog breeders. I think those are okay, but should be regulated with license requirements. For example, there can only be 6 black lab breeders in Wisconsin (or something along those lines.) Each breed would have a limit on the number of people that can breed them. Anybody caught breeding dogs without a license would have their animals confiscated and fined an exorbitant amount. Maybe even require all dogs to be fixed unless the owner has a breeder license. There are just too many unwanted animals out there already for people to be creating more 🙁

I’ve heard (and seen) too many people have conversations along these lines:
Person A: My dogs not fixed.
    Person B: Mine isn’t either.
Person A: We should breed them, they would make cute puppies!
    Person B: Okay!

Okay, my rant is over now.

My pet peeves usually revolve around cars:
    1. people who signal, as they’re turning
    2. people who don’t signal at all
    3. people who leave their high beams on
    4. people who don’t adjust their low beams correctly so they are left shinning in your eyes light high beams any way
    5. people who do number 4 above and get HID or pretend HID bulbs!

in reply to: Wisconsin Geocoin #1920918

I wasn’t concerned, $5 sounded fair for shipping/packing and handling. I figured that any extra was just going to the WGA’s fund.

in reply to: Wisconsin Geocoin #1920916

I had 1 coin and 1 pathtag and it was $5 shipping. Added another pathtag and it stayed at $5. Didn’t try it with just a coin though.

Might as well check mine out too. Just go to: My Profile and it should bring up the ideas I posted.

We might as well support our group here on there 🙂
