Wow! Thanks guys…I appreciate the kind words. Mom (Sue) and I have been trying to hit the milestones together and sometimes that means one of us has to do some marathon caching while the other stays at home for a little while. 🙂 But since we do most of our caching together that doesn’t happen too often.
Hope to see everyone on the trail real soon!
Sara(Marc, next time we run into each other I will make sure I wear my new WGA name tag)
If you don’t have to be near the Dells but want peace and quiet, I suggest Yellowstone Lake State Park near Blanchardville. We are going there this weekend and it is a FABULOUS park. Very quiet and NO MOSQUITOES! They have a huge bat population so we don’t even have to pack the bug spray.
Also, they always seem to have sites available for reservation and actually have quite a few that are non-reservable.
Good luck! Hope you find a spot to stay!

Would I attend an event if there were no temps? Yes, and I have. Would I attend if there were temps but we weren’t able to log them? Again, yes, but I would NOT be hunting the temps. That would be a waste of time in my opinion.

So who ever it is that makes these rules, why not go to them and ask for a definitive answer???
That’s the thing…..the folks at GC.com have been asked this very question many times by many people and they have never responded. The closest thing to an answer anyone has ever heard is that each state’s caching group (i.e. WGA) can set their own rules regarding temps. But then no one here can agree either and we go around in circles after each event.
The official stance of WGA is that the temps are “allowed”. If you don’t want to log them, fine. Just don’t look down on me for logging mine.

Welcome to the obsession! I am sure you are going to love caching and all the people on this site are great.
I live and work in Madison so if you want some pointer, maybe we could work something out.
Happy caching!

What are the other states stances on BONUS finds? Why not just place one new permanent cache for each event as close to the event as possible? Place a code word inside. Come to the event and present the code word to obtain the coords for the event temps. Go find the temps and log them as bonus finds under the permanent. You still get to log that you attended the event. You get one additional permanent and you get to log all of the temps as bonus finds under a cache with a GC#.
You would not need to present the code word to obtain the event cache coords, but by finding the permanent cache; you’d have another logging option.
Just throwing out ideas here…
Now THAT is the best idea I have heard in a while. Or just make it one REALLY big multi…. Although everyone would still grumble because the “stages” wouldn’t be permanent. Might shut them up for a while though and get “them” to stop looking at our event caches.

I just attended the WGA Campout in Waupaca and was really impressed with the hides. They were topnotch, clever and for the most part super challenging. I have never been so tired after a day of caching as I was after that event. It took me a week to fully recover. If you tell me that I wasn’t really caching then I am going to get ticked off!
My attitude after reading this thread and the one on the GC.com board is “fine, then I will never attend another event.” I am not going to waste time that I could be out “really caching” to sit around a campfire and sing songs. No, I am not there purely for the numbers, but if I work that hard for a cache then I would like the “reward” that comes along with it, namely getting credit for finding it in the first place.
My time is very limited yet I choose to go out and search for tupperware in the woods. If I am not going to get credit for the caches I find at events then I won’t look for those caches. Period. Maybe I will come, shake hands and then be on my way, but only if it is right in my backyard. I will definitely not travel 50 miles with today’s gas prices just to log a single find. Not worth it.
Yes, this issue is a dead horse, but many people keep making it an issue and I don’t want to be looked down upon by “purists” at the events. Maybe it really is better to avoid them altogether.
BTW, for means of full disclosure….I logged 34 “attends” for the WGA Campout and until 20 minutes ago I didn’t feel bad about it. It was hard work and I thought I earned them. I will not be changing my logs, but I will probably never do it again.

Great topic! Definitely hit my nail right on the head!
Currently, all of my passions seem to fit together nicely. In warm weather, I geocache. In cold weather, I scrapbook. At all times of the year, if I am sitting in front of the TV, I crochet (no, I am not 80 years old). I don’t have time for anything else right now. Except maybe the occasional Sudoku.
In the past, I was obsessed with photography (still use it to scrapbook), cross stitch, word puzzles, reading….I am sure there are more.
Now if only I could learn to be compulsive about cleaning my house I would feel better about myself….

Depending on your county, a lot of the info might be online. I know Dane and Sauk County each have a great GIS system online where you can locate the property by address, on a map or by township/section. You might want to start there first and then verify at the courthouse.

I recently posted a “Needs Archived” note on a cache that had been temporarily disabled for 7 months, saying they had picked the cache up and would relocate. Within hours, a reviewer had posted a message saying it would be closed in 4 days if it wasn’t resolved by then. The owner then abandoned the cache area and admitted they had moved so it wasn’t convenient for them anymore. It was all very civilized and handled quickly. Makes me wish I had done it sooner, then maybe I would have had a new cache to put out for the Geo Campout last weekend. 🙂
I think anything more than 1-2 months of being “temporarily” disabled is excessive and anyone should feel free to post a maintenance or archive note to get the reviewers involved.

My personal impact was rather low, since I was staying at my parents house less than 5 miles away. Food was free, bed was free and I had enough gas to get from Madison and back again without filling up, especially since Mom drove to and from the park and we stuck to doing the temporary caches only. Did eat lunch at Subway though and bought a year long park sticker, so I guess that is better than nothing. 🙂
Had this been somewhere else NOT in my backyard, I would have probably spent close to $250 between hotel, food and gas. Just “food” for thought.

Hey guys! Glad to see you are back on the trail. Give me a call if you ever want to go out to pick up a few. I know Little GOJeeper and the Princess would love to chase each other through the woods! Check out Wexford Wandering…there is an AWESOME play area there.
See you tonight!
SaraAt my parent’s house in Waupaca, 5 minutes from camp. Love to camp, but not when the 2 YO can play with his favorite people….his grandparents! And getting a full night of sleep is just a bonus.

I have a couple that I would like to share! Most of the ones we currently have are headed to New Zealand with my DH tomorrow, but there are a couple that would like to hang around and those I can pass along. Would also love to discover some of the great coins out there! We will be at the event early on Saturday morning.
