Every event we’ve been at, the owners have logged. I know I’d log it. Attending an event that you “own” puts you on even footing with everyone else there–they all came and shared the same experience. It’s different than “finding” a regular cache that you own, because there you are not on even footing–you have the advantage of knowing where it is.

But ultimately, do what you want, no one else should care and if they do, 😛 .

    Here’s the whole 1000+ – post thread.

The nut of it is that some people lacked the cerebral capacity to figure out additional logging requirements or the opposable thumbs to deftly manipulate a keyboard, so it was an effort to dumb down the game for the masses.

maintenance schmaintenance!!!! what’s a few more?

Yeah, what the heck. We’ll just let them go dormant if we can’t keep up, WisKid will eventually archive them after a few months’ worth of DNFs and NM logs, and they’ll finally become cache rescue missions worth ten points in the LCG. 😡 Either that or we’ll just archive them when we’re bored of them but leave the containers in place. 👿 ❗ I think that’s how it’s supposed to work, right?

Since I am new, why was this change needed after it was allowed for so long?

Enough people complained, for whatever reason. Groundspeak decided that ALRs essentially detracted from the raison d’etre of geocaching, which is finding a container using your GPS, period.

Anything less and you are not finding the cache and you are disrespecting the owner.

    Absolutely.

If you don’t do the ALR, you haven’t found the cache as it was created and rated by the owner in terms of difficulty, period. It also disrespects all the work an owner has done to put together a quality cache experience.

Lazy logging does really reflect most negatively on the logger, but unfortunately it also cheapens the accomplishment of people who do put forth the effort necessary to truly log the cache.

Well, you can’t turn back the clock on this one, and the question we posed was “what do you do as an owner?”

In our case, we had only a few ALRs to begin with, but the ones that were left we turned into bonus and multiple log opportunities to at least give considerate cachers a little extra bonus. However, we will NOT change ALR caches into traditionals, because at least having something classified as an “unknown” cache does filter the gene pool a little bit.

Oh yeah, that should work. Didn’t think about importing that into the unfound database.

    So many workarounds….

There is a way to use the file off your Oregon to update your GSAK database and mark the caches found.

Not that I’ve found. Oregon doesn’t make any changes to the GPX file and doesn’t seem to pass any “found” information back to GSAK either way, unless I am just missing it.

If you want to see what caches you have found in your latest gpx download when you load it to a pre-existing database you would click on “Search” and then select “Filter” from the drop down. In the dialog that opens, just uncheck the check box next to “Unfound” and click “go” at the bottom. This will show you all of the caches that you have found in your database. To delete the caches you have found you would then right click and select “delete waypoint”. You would then select “All Waypoints in Filter” and click “ok”.

There may be a better way to do it, but this is how I do it and it isn’t too difficult to figure out.

    Ok, still on this topic.

When you create a PQ, are you leaving caches that you have found in the PQ?

Our weekly PQ basically specifies “Caches within a 30 mile radius of our home coordinates that we do not own and have not found.”

Therefore, we do not receive “found” caches in the PQ.

Therefore, when we update the “Unfound caches” database in GSAK, it is not updating the caches in the existing database as found, because no new information comes through on those caches.

The only way I can see to let GSAK know what you have found is to load found caches in it, but loading ALL the caches in a 30-mile radius exceeds the number limit of the query.

    Make sense?

What kinds of placements require permission before placing?

Here is another thread on this topic:

    http://wi-geocaching.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6920&highlight=permission+form

There is also a “generic” permission form here:

    http://wi-geocaching.com/modules.php?name=Wiki&pagename=Hiding%20A%20Cache

    Under “General cache hiding rules.”

In theory, every cache placement requires permission because all land belongs to someone or some entity. On lands that the public has a right to be on freely, you can also argue that you have no right to leave something there permanently. Groundspeak guidelines also state “By submitting a cache listing, you assure us that you have adequate permission to hide your cache in the selected location.”

In practice, 99.9999% percent of cache placements are made under the theory of “it is better to beg forgiveness than ask permission,” and that percentage is probably low.

With that said, you can never go wrong with asking for explicit permission. The worst thing that happens is they say “no.” The upside is that everything is above-board and you avoid post-placement problems.

Hypothetically speaking 😉 as long as a cache does not show up as on private property on whatever magical maps the reviewers use, it’s not an issue. Most roadside right-of-way caches also get published, even though many of them are questionably placed.

After this season’s drama, I don’t know if the results say more about the qualities of Brett Favre or the stupidity of the Vikings organization. I mean, you think the Vikes would have learned a thing or two from the events of previous years.

Then again, maybe Brett’s actions show that he’s a loyal Packer after all, considering the turmoil he’s left the ViQueens’ training camp in!!!
