Nice work and a strong showing in the LCG despite a paucity of LCG density in their neck of the woods…

I should clarify that there are many ways to “give back” to the community, IMO, including but not limited to…

    -Placing well-maintained caches
-Finding and logging caches as owners design them, as recognition of the work they put into them
    -Participating in CITOs
-Being an advocate in the community, with local parks depts., etc
-Serving actively on a WGA committee

And so on and so forth.

I believe that anyone who can find the time to go out and find caches also has the time and responsibility to do some of these things.

But, we are straying from the topic, albeit a pretty well-hashed one at present.

I did see a cacher near my parents’ home posting on every single ALR cache yesterday….”Is this open for grabbing per the new gs rules?”

Man! Does that “grabbing” epitomize the attitude here or what?!!

There are always those who will not give anything back to this game I guess. Geocaching depends on the welfare of others to continue (quite literally, in both time and expense), and just like life there will be those who take and take and take….

Alex, you’re a creative guy, and I’m sure you’ll find out some way to get what you want done within the confines of the gc publication process…you always seem to manage it somehow. 😆

Regarding the groundspeak decision–in biz speak I think we’d call this “focusing on their core competency.”

gc decided that its purpose in the world is to give people a way to find things using their GPSr, period.

That is, unless it’s an EarthCache…or they can make money selling an app like whereigo…

No, I do not see these as ALRs. It’s just the way of saying “I have completed the other caches”. Probably a subtle difference ……

The following is a list of all the challenge caches in Wisconsin that I am aware of. None of these require any modification:

    GC15JH6 Crazy Retro Driver’s Wanted!
    GC1P8AF WSQ 000 The quest ….

Now see, even here this gets fuzzy. The “challenge” part of “Crazy Retro” is to find the puzzle caches. But the cache requires the log be formatted in a particular way. Is that an ALR?

Same goes for WSQ 000. Not only do you have to find 66 caches, but you gotta post in your log when you found them all.

Obviously common sense and courtesy will come into play here–most cachers who put forth the time and effort to complete a challenge will also do the log.

Just seems like gc really threw out the proverbial baby with the bathwater on this one…or took this idea out of the oven a bit too soon..or a few other cliche’s I can’t think of at the moment.

Oh well, it’s all a moot point now anyway! I got some guard rail caches to go find…

    3. This change does not affect to those caches which require you to find a bunch of caches, where information for a final cache is contained in each of (or some of) the caches.

Deejay, I’m assuming that the second part of this sentence is not critical, just the first part, correct?

In other words, challenge caches where you have to find a bunch of other caches first (Like Marc’s WSQ 000) are ok.

I ask because we’ve “converted” all our 6-packs to “challenge” caches for ease of maintenance (by both us and finders).

To some geocachers, “it’s all about the numbers.” Seeing that little ticker go up is what really gets their ticker going and they’ll spend their time doing their best NASCAR impression rather than puzzling over puzzles or struggling with ALRs.

Other cachers are those who are motivated by trying to find “something different.” They’ll spend their evenings working through puzzles rather than sorting through a best-line-of-travel PQ, and they’ll pass up a park-n-ride on the way to a lonely cache.

What groundspeak seems to be saying is “we prefer quantity over quality.” You want 1,000 smash and grab micros .1 mile apart? Great! You wanna require people to take some extra time at a cache? Nope.

Well, it’s groundspeak’s sandbox, so you gotta play by their rules.

But having just come back from doing a number of really creative letterboxes today, including one that was inside a library (it’s a hollowed out reference book), it’s just too bad that groundspeak has to keep working to dumb the game down to the lowest common denominator.

Here’s the official verbiage for the “challenge” caches:

Challenge caches incorporate special logging requirements and are listed as Mystery/Puzzle caches. Typically they require the seeker to have previously met a reasonable geocaching-related qualification (Waymarking and Wherigo qualify too, of course) such as first finding a cache in every county in your state. If you are thinking of creating such a cache, please include a note to the reviewer demonstrating either that you have met the challenge yourself, or that a substantial number of other geocachers would be able to do so.

So, to use Marc’s caches as an example here, the photo requirements for each individual Mystery cache are now (according to groundspeak), “optional.”

However, the bonus/final/challenge cache to the series, which requires you to find all the other caches in the series, is A-OK.

Same goes for fizzy challenges, Delorme, etc.

Also anything where (like us) you’ve structured a final/bonus cache as an ALR/challenge for practicality sake. That is, rather than require you to (somehow) collect partial coordinates from each of our 91 Shawano Cemetery Challenge caches, you simply find them before finding the bonus.

The stated intent here is to make challenges “geocaching-related.” Performing different tasks that are not geocaching related, now “optional.” Finding other geocaches first is a geocaching task.

I’m not thrilled with this change because it eliminates, or at least dilutes, some great ideas, but it appears to be an instance where some ruined it for all. As usual.

Wow…took a quick scan of the thread…this is huge.

Could we get a reviewer’s thoughts on this?

(Curious what Marc has to say too…)
