This is really the point. We do still get annoyed when people shortcut one of our challenging puzzles (or multis). And when we put 20+ hours (probably more like 40+ hours) into solving a puzzle like “Carol” and then see a “big arse group” (to use their term) go slam it, well it does initially cheapen it. And yes, I know many people in that BAG are in these forums, and this is not a personal attack, it’s just a difference in philosophy.

Fortunately, those nasty thoughts diminish quickly because ultimately we play this game for our own reasons, not for someone else’s reasons. So as we occasionally look over our past puzzle finds we have not only a lot to remember about the solve and the find, but also the satisfaction at knowing that we were able to solve them.

On the other hand, there are those who are, as they will admit, “numbers people” to whom seeing their find ticker go up is more important and satisfying or who are, as you say, simply bothered by having stuff show up in their “nearest unfound caches” search.

It’s kinda like philosophies regarding weekend golf. Do you play by the rules so that when you do score that personal best round, you can keep your card and be proud of an honest score? Or do you throw in a bunch of mulligans and hand-wedges just to break 100 (or whatever).

For us, being part of a puzzle tour where we didn’t make the solve would be like catching a ride with Rosie Ruiz to the end of a marathon. Why bother? For other folks it’s different. Viva la difference.

    Solving puzzles,
Finding puzzles (especially because they tend to be more winter friendly), and
Coming up with new puzzle ideas.

Ya, what they said! All the “seeds” enjoyed bowling together and one of them even got an honest strike! I think they would have done a bit better had I remembered to ask for the bumpers to be raised before the 10th frame… 😳

We decided to fill out a few forms once we realized that, hey, we actually did a bunch of these over the weekend! A few more to log yet and that will be it for the month.

Truthfully we have no serious interest in the LCG game because 1) we really have no desire to get into a “competition” with others and 2) we don’t want to be on the receiving end of some of the snide comments we’ve seen made here and elsewhere against leaders/winners if by some miracle we would actually win a month

Just so’s you know, no need to fear us in the rear view mirror.

Try doing it with “really” hot water and use just a cup. Also throw it up high enough to separate the water.

I believe the water has to be (near) boiling and the air at least -10. Or just check out our youtube video and stay warm.

What about the old “lick your lips and press them against a metallic object outside when it’s below zero” test? Haven’t tried that one myself for about 45 years… any takers? 😯

You first, and let us know how it goes.

If it were not for geocaching:

-Our kids wouldn’t be able to talk about dad:
Hanging upside down in a tree in a “surreal” attempt to retrieve a cache
Nearly falling out of another tree in an attempt to retreive a non-“FTF”
Climbing to the top of a 40 foot pine tree to get a cache. (Do you see a theme here???)
Portaging them through the swamp on his back because he thought there was a shortcut that way. (And doing it twice, on different caches.)

-We would have simply wasted our time lounging on the beach in the Carribean rather than going looking for geocaches. 8)

-We would know little about dozens of different types of creative and amazing puzzles that have expanded our thinking.

-We’d have about $1,000 that we wouldn’t have spent on cache containers and supplies that went into 180+ caches and we could have invested that money in the stock market and…oh, never mind.

-We wouldn’t know 1/10th of the local places we have discovered that are real gems.

-We’d have dozens fewer new friends.

-We wouldn’t be able to spot rural cemeteries on sight. From miles away.

-We would not have a scrapbooks and minds full of great family memories.

We use 2 different GPS units for placing caches. If both agree, we are happy. If not, we come back a different day, try again, and reaverage.

You just have to research until you can’t research anymore and come up with some great plan for keeping track of who goes where and who overlaps. I made the terrible “mistake” of finding more in common (supporting roles on page 2 of the list so to speak) than the cache owner which had to be corrected by him or I would never have completed the matrix.

Got it! Honestly, if I never see the name Lee Cobb again it will be too soon. And who knew so darn many people worked with James Stewart? This is like the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon on steroids.

Oh crap, did I just give s|s a new idea? 😯

Ok, the kids thought the water was cool, so we share it with you:

In case you’re interested, cold water does nothing interesting at all.

We did get the bubbles to work somewhat. They fall to the ground frozen then roll around for a bit. Kind of weird but nowhere near the effect of the hot water.

    Now, back to work!

Deleting a log just because you’re annoyed with what a finder said? 🙄

Ok, this looked like a good thing for the kids to do since there is no school today. So I did a trial run whilst they were sleeping.

The cup of hot water was amazing!

The bubbles…I could not get to work well. Problem number 1, too windy. Problem number 2, bubble solution freezes on bubble blowing stick (seriously). Manazged to get one bubble that appeared to freeze and then fall to the ground and shatter like glass.

    I will await other reports…

“As the cache owner, you are also responsible for physically checking your cache periodically, and especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.).

Your maintenance plan must allow for a quick response to reported problems.”

Is over a year after force-archiving quick? I guess that’s open to interpretation.

Honestly, I think it would be faster to create a mashup between existing finals and waypoints within the 2-mile circle of the dummy coordinates and then wander around in the spaces left over.
