I believe the evince 10-minute rule only applies if you enter the wrong coordinates on the second try. In other words, you enter a wrong set of coordinates on the first try because you mis-typed, but you fix your error and enter the right set, it should verify you.
I’m not sure about going from cache to cache for different evince solutions. I guess we tend not to solve more than one puzzle every 10 minutes.
The reason we started using evince on our puzzle caches was that geochecker was simply behaving too slowly and unreliably. They may have added servers or otherwise fixed the problem over the past few months.
This thread may now proceed to devolve into the usual anti-puzzle rant. I’ll start…”well, you wouldn’t need a checker if you didn’t place puzzles…”

I doubt they get into it thinking that what they’re going to be finding is match stick holders in a bush.
You’re talking two different things here. There are micro hides, and there are lame hides.
Basically, it’s frustrating to have both swag and caches disappear. Micro caches have, in our experience, been much less prone to muggling.
So, cachers know what they’re getting into based on the size description of the cache. And if you see it’s a 4/1 micro, you know you’re in for one of those “I’ll place it so no one can find it” micros. We don’t have any of those and don’t enjoy them either, but the attributes are there.
Here’s my basic take on the game. This is like Easter egg hunting when you were a kid. No kid really wants to eat the hard boiled egg. They just want to find the egg. So micros, smalls, regulars, or super large–they’re all the same. From the standpoint of a cache placer, I’m going to put out what 1) gives back to the geo community, and 2) causes me the least in maintenance headaches and subsidizing the Freddie Freeloaders and cache raiders.
On the Left Side of the Road...We have pretty much decided to hide only micros from now on. Basically we’re tired of being the equivalent of geo-WalMart for all the swag mooches out there. I don’t mind maintaining caches with fresh pencils and new log books but when we start an ammo box filled with a dozen new items and a year later it has 2 dirty golf balls in it, well the heck with it.
When we started this game, finding the boxes was nice. However, what difference does it really make if you find a micro with just a log or a box with a log and a bunch of junk in it, except perhaps that it’s easier to find.
So I say bring on the micros, the more the merrier.
On the Left Side of the Road...07/12/2008 at 10:21 am in reply to: Looking for outstanding can’t miss caches near Shawano, WI #1891888I would also highly recommend “spare rib.” We were able to get to this one without going through the state park itself by taking the old quarry road on the north.
If you do GC12A78, it gives you parking directions to find that road. Then from that cache, just walk about .5 mile more to the west on the road.
From there, it’s a climb to the top, but it was still less hazardous in my opinion to taking the “beyond the trails” way from the state park itself which we had attempted the day before.
On the Left Side of the Road...I’ve decided to blame the loss on a tape-loving squirrel. Maybe he’s eaten the magnet and can literally get his behind stuck to a metal pole somewhere…
On the Left Side of the Road...tyedyeskyguy, we didn’t put the amount of effort into our cache as you did on yours, but you might find this interesting.
One of the hides we checked on today was a bison tube that we used duct tape to hold a rare earth magnet to. That in turn was placed inside a metal pole, not visible.
After seeing logs that it was on the grass, we checked it out. The tape was removed from the main part of the tube (but not the top) and the magnet was gone. The cache itself was still closed and the log in good order.
Now, if a muggle finds this and decides to mess with it, why leave the container? Or does a cacher just need a rare earth magnet so badly? Just very bizarre.
On the Left Side of the Road...In your #2, you forgot to mention “caching tours.” By the time the last person gets the log to sign, the first person who actually found the cache is halfway back to the car. Now where did the finder actually find the cache? Ah, who the heck cares, I got my smilely which was fun for me, so I’ll just drop it where I’m standing. 🙄
On the Left Side of the Road...Well, s|s, you win! (Or lose, as the case may be.)
On the Left Side of the Road...I thought the topic of this thread was called “Venting.” My mistake.
On the Left Side of the Road...On the same topic, though different caches, here’s our weekend experience:
Our “Mean Cutting” (anagram of “magnetic nut”). WP1 was made to look exactly like other bolt heads on a table, and a second one was made as a “decoy” for symmetry. They were in a location where a non-geocaching visitor shouldn’t find or dislodge them, and they were held on with a STACK of rare earth magnets. Very hard to get off.
Well, the one that has the coordinates on is missing. The decoy is still there.
One regular cache in Shawano torn apart
One small cache in Green Bay taken
One small cache in DePere, destroyed
Bison tube held in place inside a metal pole by a rare earth magnet, lying several feet away, open, in the middle of the grass.
Just makes you want to do a big “archive” run.
On the Left Side of the Road...Aha; a fitting tribute.
On the Left Side of the Road...We stayed dry.
Since we are apparently exceptionally dense…what is the meaning of the name of the float????
On the Left Side of the Road...It’s “aboot” time!
Hey, Lance…did we see you on a float at the Bonduel parade yesterday, or was it a look alike????
On the Left Side of the Road...My 2 cents is that since any earthcache–even the erratics talked about–will, by virtue of the publication requirements, require some actual thought and work on the part of both the placer and the finder, they’re already way higher on the Not Lame scale than the lamp post, guard rail, and other drive-up hides that seem to be proliferating lately.
