I’ll check out Free GPS. I liked Waypoint for the interface (it seems very kid-friendly), but not being able to adjust coordinates once entered is kind of a PITA.
On the Left Side of the Road...I don’t like the workaround using the geocaching app for this particular purpose. The objective is to teach a very young group of girl scouts about geocaching and that way is pretty complicated.
However, I searched in the app store using “waypoint” as the keyword instead of GPS, and I came up with an app simply called “waypoint.”
It does exactly what I want — one click to set a waypoint, and the interface is very friendly for kids.
So…problem solved!

On the Left Side of the Road...I would take rcflyer up on his offer.
What we have done with a Cub Scout group is start with the basics: every point on a map of the planet can be marked by invisible lines of latitude and longitude, so everywhere you are standing is literally “X marks the spot.” Then, set up a basic orientation with the GPS where they aren’t looking for a hidden object. In other words, make the waypoint something big and visible like a picnic shelter. Have them start and walk toward the shelter while watching what the GPSr does.
Once they get that done, they can start looking for caches, and they should be temporary caches. Stock each one with Scout Swag or even candy.
On the Left Side of the Road...Thanks for the memories…
On the Left Side of the Road...Congratulations!
On the Left Side of the Road...As much as we enjoyed the Sailor Jerry series, we are challenged to keep up with our own cache maintenance these days. Plus it doesn’t seem right to have anyone else owning those!

day 4 souvenir looks kinda like S|S coin submission some time back but that was a bison tube (supposed to be a bison tube) hanging and not a birdhouse.
I remember that one. 😳
I don’t understand the point of souvenirs. At all.
Geocaching is supposed to be a “high tech treasure hunt.” You know, get outside and do stuff. See new places. Meet people. Whatever. Souvenirs are completely online, electronic thingamabobs. Worthless. Yes, your find count is maintained online but it represents something in the real world.
A souvenir that tells me I found a cache on Wednesday, or in Wisconsin, or on National Bacon Day–I already know that. Or are people out there showing their souvenir pages on their smartphones to fellow cachers, like proud grandparents pulling out a binder full of baby pictures? I honestly can’t recall the last time I looked at my souvenir page.
They’re just really dumb. Perhaps the dumbest idea ever in the history of dumb geocaching ideas. And before anyone flames me with “if you don’t like them, don’t do them,” just remember I’m not the one who asked the question, just responding to it.
On the Left Side of the Road...What’s a geocaching souvenir?
On the Left Side of the Road...Yeah, I meant OF the Baird Creek area, not TO…
On the Left Side of the Road...Finding a cache container replaced with a used dental floss container. Yuk.

Yeah I know we could’ve gotten to the maintenance sooner but there was no indication in the logs that anything had been “replaced.” Double yuk.
On the Left Side of the Road...Never underestimate the excitement of some good paint-watching.
On the Left Side of the Road...Well, there was one time I ignored the little voice on the device and chose to turn onto a “shorter” route that was labelled “Forest Road” on the map. Of course it wasn’t “Forest Road,” it was A forest road. As in logging road. Yeah, the first .1 mile was paved, then gravel, then…
Did I mention I was pulling a 22 foot camper at the time? 😳
Then there’s the time I got the wife’s convertible stuck on “Schultz Road” in the snow…but I digress…
On the Left Side of the Road...When we started caching, it was something to do with the family and a chance to get out and explore new places.
Well now that we’ve seen those places and like them, we go back for other reasons. We camp, fish, bike, etc. We simply find it more enjoyable to do other stuff in the outdoors than geocaching.
Not that it’s boring, but the excitement has gone, and that’s a difference. None of the challenges do anything to spice that up.

“Enter Zip Code.”
“Use $0.20/gallon reward? Y/N”
“Car Wash today? Y/N”
“Receipt? Y/N?”
“Lift handle”
“Select grade”
“Begin fueling”👿
