  • in reply to: Volunteer reviewer, or referee??? #1937193

If we start picking apart people’s logs in a public forum there’s going to be no end to this.

I realize that there may be a concern on the part of the OP because the logs in question are from a reviewer and a board member, but nothing in my experience would indicate that the review process is anything but objective, and I’ve had my disagreements with said reviewer as well.

Everybody can find fault with something that somebody else writes, even if it’s just TFTC.

Well, with that said I’m sure someone can find something I’ve written in the forums over the past 4 years that contradicts what I’ve just written here… 🙄

On the Left Side of the Road...

I only know two kids who are taking advantage of this; one’s dad is a hard-core hunter and the kid (a daughter, btw) has all the right gear and hunter safety training. She’s also pretty good with a bow.

The other is 9 years old and can’t wait to get out with his dad (who is a DNR guy of some capacity) next year. When we talked about knife safety in my cub scout den (whittlin’ chip), the kid could pretty much give the lesson.

These two may very well be the exception rather than the rule, but I hope not.

And my 2 cents is that I am MUCH more worried about the group of 2 dozen weekend warriors who get together to drive a postage stamp sized field of corn and shoot at anything that moves. As a runner who lives in a rural area, hunting season is the time to wear blaze orange EVERYWHERE outside and reconsider any early-morning runs I have scheduled. In my time I’ve heard plenty of blasting outside before the sun has come up.

in reply to: proximity issues and reviewer logs #1937120

The reviewers are human and prone to human error…

But with that said, I have seen more than one occasion where the wrong cache (i.e., the existing cache) got disabled because of “proximity issues” when a new cache was trying to be published.

It also appears–and Peach can clarify because I didn’t see it–that the issue had to do with a reviewer note being posted, perhaps to the existing cache? Whatever the note was gave the cache away and anyone who had watchlisted it would see, as would the rest of the world. And I’m not sure if the CO can delete a reviewer note.

Of course, even if there is no error, telling the submitting CO of the new cache that “your cache is to close to cache GC12345” can give it away to that new CO which, depending on that CO, could mean “everyone else” and cause your cache to get bushwhacked or go AWOL, as s|s seems to have found out.

The first issue is solvable, but I’m not sure how to address the third while still giving the other CO meaningful information they can work with.

Lastly, regarding coordinate stacking, I have seen this done intentionally by cachers who like to leave their marc on a particular area or who are trying to make some superiority statement or for whatever reason they get their personal jollies out of doing so.

I had the “lost satellite reception” message a few times on my Oregon 400t. Sometimes it was in the car and others in tree cover. Two days ago it happened while moving in the car about 3 times. We were not traveling under a bridge or something similar. We were out on the open highway or street.

New phenomenon or has this happened before? All I know is this has never happened before, and it happens in the wide open, but while moving.

Just a reminder that there are only 2 more days to submit reports for September…we don’t want to call the month just yet prematurely, if anyone’s sitting on 40 or so LCG reports out there… 🙄

Well I’ve had more chance to troubleshoot these units. They hold reception fine when in the clear, like on the windshield, but move them to the center console and you drop reception. You can see the bars drop from 8+ to 1 or 0 when you move it from the dash to your lap.

Additionally, the other day the 550 took about 10 minutes to find and lock satellites despite not being moved from its previous location after shutoff.

Now, this is happening on two different Oregon units, both of which used to be able to lock on within seconds after startup, and which used to be able to achieve a lock IN THE BASEMENT.

Next step is to contact Garmin, but I’m just wondering if anyone else is having similar problems. It’s just strange to have the same behavior on two units.

in reply to: Appleton Area – Recommended Kid Caches #1936841

Based on recommendations and recollections from our kids, ages 8 and 11, here’s a list that’s pretty much clustered in the downtown. Not sure how many of these you’ve already found:

While you’re doing “Bouncing Back,” which is a must-do, go find GC1CT2N Grubby Fingers.

We also liked GC107AF, Opti-Mistic, if you take the time to do the ALR, which I’m sure you will. While you’re in the area of Opti-Mistic, you could try GC1F6Q8, if your kids are old enough to work on the field-solve part–it’s interesting but the final is your basic micro. Then swing back and do GCZTFJ, Consult the Oracle–our kids loved “signing” the log book in that one.

Also in the general downtown area–maybe over lunch?–be sure to do “Pace Yourself.” GC1693Q. This is our kids’ all-time Appleton favorite. Whether you do the following ones is up to you. We did the night cache Pace Yourself but, while they enjoyed looking for the signs, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for kids. GC10AE7 is also one of our all time favorites and you’ll be in the area, and the kids will like the final if it hasn’t changed.

If you want to do some desk-solves beforehand, and if you have older kids, they’ll probably enjoy the container of GC1DC1G. You also might want to solve GC1C0XF if you’re doing some of the above caches. Our kids also liked the story behind GC18ZD5, so if you want a quiet cache mixed in there that would be a good one.

If you’re staying late, for night caches, I highly recommend GC205QP, but be warned that it is very difficult to find the trail, and the location is very creepy. If you want a night cache that has the brightest fire-tack trails around, try GC1HJR7. It is a bit out of your way, but it also looks like the cache container was replaced so it is perfect for this time of year.

There are more I could recommend, including some good crawling and spelunking caches, but the above andyour list will keep you busy. At least with our kids, about a dozen is the limit.

Wow! I would say Pace Yourself! but you seem to be doing just fine at the pace you’re going. Congrats to one of the classiest teams out there and unarguably the best tale-weavers in the geo-community.

We’ve created a monster…looks like we’ll be passed by team HP2 any day now. They’ve already passed us in number of finds and are second only to s|s in non-revisits. But we’re still #1 in rescues (and DNFs 😳 )! Woo hoo! The only question is…when will they pass sagasu for the combined top spot? Wagers anyone?

I don’t know about “moral” but it is a dilemma. On one hand I sure don’t need more stuff but on the other I hate to see it inevitably disappear. (Makes ya wonder why I bought them in the first place!)

Oh well, if you love something, set it free, if it doesn’t come back it’s a geocoin.
