Yup, we don’t mind the snow…and we like the green and the warm…it’s this slopola we have to endure to get there that is a bit tiring. But like a bad burrito, this too shall pass.

FYI, the answer is “We have no way of knowing.” In case you missed it in the newsletter:

This is not the millionth cache ever hidden, since caches have been archived over the years, but the millionth active cache listing. There is no way to pinpoint who owns the cache, since every time a cache is archived, this changes. Therefore, if you hid a cache on the 8th, the millionth might have been yours at some point during the day!

Here are some interesting facts that show how quickly geocaching has grown in the last couple of years:
    • We hit 500,000 active caches on 12/31/2007
    • Geocaching.com had 531,000 active caches listed as of 3/3/2008
    • There were 741,000 active caches as of 3/3/2009

Over 1/4 million hides in the last year. I bet the bison tube, matchstick container, and broken blinkie light industries are wondering what the heck is going on.

    I haven’t gotten that error.

That will work for only the more basic image puzzles, which these may in fact be, which is essentially a replication of physical steganography techniques (i.e., done to an actual picture).

For computer-stegged images, you have to get to the code. For instance, you could add visually indetectible watermarks; embed coordinates in an unused/unread portion of the image code; or even change individual pixels of the picture to map them to alphabetic characters. You can use a program like stegdetect which works on a whole bunch of different types of methods. I have not done much with it though.

If you’re lucky it will be the first way, and you might be able to tell this by how many people have solved it!

The trick is really not “looking” at it, you need to decode the picture. Basically coordinates are hidden in the picture code. You can use a steg detect program of sorts. It’s a little beyond my pay grade but I’m guessing the more graphically-computer inclined on these boards can chime in.

How do you purge your DB of archived caches (or don’t you)?

Well, this is getting OT but TBC brought it up and started the thread so I’m blaming him…

On one hand, I can see the appeal of these trails to go out and do a “let’s do a big numbers day.” And in this particular area the terrain might be interesting, particularly if you go by ATV, etc.

But I’m just not sure that what gets people interested in geocaching is the allure of finding hundreds of filmstrip cans spaced .1 mile apart.

Yes, I know the game has lots of different things for different players and literally a million different caches, but the preponderance of placements lately seem to be roadside hides. I don’t think that fosters the stated goal of geocaching as a “high tech treasure hunt.”

I could be wrong, and if I am I’m sure I’ll hear about it. 🙄

Regarding 500 caches in a day, it can probably be done here.

This is the kind of stuff that will be the slow death of this game, IMHO.

Probably said some of this already, but…

Cache owners who put thoughtful hides into great places….

Cachers who complete cache rescue missions to help on maintenance requests….

Puzzle cache owners who are always willing to extend a hand to help, even knowing that the hand that is extended back might be held with a raised middle finger or closed fist….

Cache owners who endure with aplomb streams of NM or SBA logs on their caches that are posted for dubious, petty, or vindictive reasons….

Cachers who take the time to post lots of pictures to their logs….

Cachers who take the time to write expressive logs….then post a note to the cache afterward to let us know they’ve added even more….

    People who don’t give up….

    Thanks.

A former boss of mine (this was before I retired) told me a story about bringing his kids to the office on a Saturday for some reason. The kids were examining the walls of the cubicle with keen interest. He asked them what they were doing and they said, “We’re looking for the spots where the money comes out.”

Well, it was passed yesterday. Currently 1,001,001 caches.

On the national forums’ thread there doesn’t seem to be any indication of which cache it was, and perhaps the frog needs to do a magical query to find this out, but I suspect we’ll know sooner or later.
