Yeah, it doesn’t look like those two caches would be published as is today. As I mentioned it was a case where geoaware had two submissions at the same time and we and Wiskey33 didn’t really know what was going on until they had published both and then tried to sort it out.

I’ve actually thought about archiving ours in the past because of the subject overlap, but just decided why bother? And, based on the supportive PM’s I’ve received from past finders about the cache, received since this thread took a rather unexpected turn, I certainly going to keep it active now! 😀

I’m sorry, but there was no need to single out these caches in such an explicit way that anyone could figure out what they are, and then denigrate them as “overkill.”

Putting a “disclaimer” on something doesn’t give you license to hide behind it–especially when you go and do exactly what you said you weren’t going to do in the disclaimer! The point could have, and should have, been made without singling out specific caches.

To Bob’s point specifically, I say the more earthcaches the merrier. What’s junk to one person is a gem to another. They’re not taking up any valuable caching real estate because proximity guidelines don’t come into play (or at least didn’t the last time I checked). And that’s just my opinion.

Perhaps, but why single out our and Wiskey33’s caches to make the point? Unless there’s another 75-acre Manitowoc county park with two earthcaches .1 miles apart that I missed.

    Well, of course except that:

Not very far from where I live there is a small county park (75 acres). In that park there are two earth caches (.1 miles apart). Talk about over kill.

I’m going to assume you are speaking of the Maribel Caves GC1DH1H
earthcaches because although there are other nearby places with multiple earthcaches, Cherney is a Manitowoc county park listed at 75 acres and the next-nearest two-fer is in Kewaunee. Perhaps I’m wrong.

In this case, these were the result of an unintentional simultaneous submission highlighting different caves in the park. As a result of discussions between the cache owners and geoaware whether one or the other should be withdrawn, it was decided at the time that–since they focused on different caves in the park–to publish two caches rather than force them together somehow.

This is the first complaint I’ve heard about there being two caches there and, speaking for our cache, the logs I’ve received on it are overwhelmingly positive.

There’s always open carry. Legal and a good deterrent.

If this is true, than is a puzzle which requires you to complete others to get key values is still OK. Is this a technicality in the difference between a “challenge” and “plain puzzle”?

A challenge cache can require you to find underlying caches (provided that the challenge itself meets the guidelines, which are intentionally narrow). Typically, but not always, the coordiantes of the final cache are posted. However, if you don’t find the caches you’re supposed to, you have taken a shortcut and you may not pass Go to collect your smilely.

A puzzle cache that involves finding underlying caches to obtain the final coordinates (through collecting numbers, information, etc.) is different because the puzzle cache cannot require that the puzzle not be shortcut. In other words, there may be other ways to obtain these coordinates–figuring out the coordinates after only finding a few of the other caches, accidentally finding the final cache, having someone else give you the coordinates, etc., the same as might happen for a “regular” puzzle that does not involve finding multiple caches to solve it.

So the big difference is that challenge caches can enforce the requirement to complete the cache as it was designed by the owner, by having the right to delete the log.

Heh heh. Actually you could argue it met the guidelines from the outset because if you get there you are on a satellite!

    Nothing too complicated.

Basically, we’d hide a few caches of various sizes, with scouting trinkets in the larger ones. We’d program the coordinates into the GPSr units, and fortunately we have collected a few units ourselves over time so we had enough to create small groups of scouts.

After a brief explanation of coordinate location in general–i.e., every point on the globe has a set of coordinates–and an explanation of geocaching, we’d lead the groups into the field until they were comfortable enough with the GPS to give it a go themselves.

We’ve done the same thing with maps for orienteering demos. It doesn’t have to be complicated.

For scouts that have never heard of caching, we have put on a few scout geocaching demonstrations and have had good luck with putting together a series of temporary (non-published) caches on scout camp property or even the private property of a scout family. The advantage is there is no driving around, the group can do a bunch of caches, it’s easier to control, and you can control the content and quality of the caches. For instance, you can put scout swag and trinkets into the caches.

You can do somewhat the same if you find an area that has a “power trail” of caches, but you cannot control the cache content and quality to the same extent.

I don’t have an answer to your GPS rental question. I might suggest that you poll your troop parents to see who might already own a handheld unit and you might be surprised at the result. Or local cachers might be willing to help out.

Whew! I was worried for a day or so that HP2 had taken Feburary off. Nope, just waiting for a tough puzzle to be nicely aged to double points. Not that I’m watching you or anything…pay no attention to what lurks in the shadows…

The profile of the cacher who placed this is interesting. One found cache (outside his house it seems) and two placed caches, both extreme hides. His bio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Garriott

I wonder what the backstory is regarding the placement of these “caches.” Anyone know?

Do you know they were archived because you recall them disappearing or is there something that shows how many were archived? Just curious.
