I’ve never seen that. Or if I have, it’s been very seldom.

The problem is that mentioning Temp Caches automatically splits people into camps regardless of what the actual question is.

If a sack race had been held at the event and raffle tickets were given to everyone who participated, but you went off to hunt caches while the race was on, you wouldn’t expect to get a ticket and I bet no one would be complaining about it.

The org has my contact info, and I’ll let you know what additional details I’m given.

If we (the WGA) want to be a part of this, I’m sure there are many additional members in the GB area who can contribute, and one of our Board members is also from GB.

Flying RC was my most recent Pre-Caching obsession. No helis, just planes. I haven’t flown in a couple of years, but have been getting the bug to go again. Jeez, I’ve got three brand new planes that I haven’t even flown yet.

Well, I had a .40 trainer that served me well for many years but I got tired of the wipe-the-oil cleanup routine when I wanted to fly for 5 minutes. The park flyer wouldn’t do it out here (too much wind) so I changed to an EP and moved the electronics to the new model.

Wouldn’t you know it, the Turf Gods demanded a sacrifice and so we needed a little fuselage…repair 😳 Got it all rebuilt in summer, looked to be running great, gave it a hand-launch…

…Whereupon it immediately took a left-hand bank and went full throttle, prop-first into the field.

So, that took care of my RC flying adventures for now. Instead I fly the full-size Cessna with which I have had markedly better experience.

But you received an unfair advantage for doing one specific part of an event that wasn’t a required part of the event.

Sorry JD and CH, but I just don’t get this.

If the event wants to have a raffle where everyone who shows up gets a ticket, that’s great.

If the event wants to have a raffle where only people who do a certain event at the event get a ticket, that’s great to.

It’s not a matter of unfair advantage, it’s a case of those who play, get a chance to win. Those that do not, do not. And everyone had an equal chance to play, so it’s completely fair.

My beef is that I should have the same chance at a drawiing as everyone else did. Being rewarded/penealized for finding a cache is not fair.

Why is this not fair? Everyone did have an equal chance at going for the prize, if they chose to hunt temp caches. Others chose not to.

It reminds me of a CITO we attended last year. If you brought back interesting trash you had a chance to win a prize. Not everyone brought back something.

And more important, the event organizers have the freedom to set up games and contests any way they see fit, just as we have the freedom whether or not to attend or participate.

If I donated a prize to the event should I say it’s only for those who DID NOT find a temp?

Well, why not? Your prize, your contest.

Events give prizes for all kinds of activities that aren’t related to finding permanent caches. This is no different.

The topic is the fact that most cachers will not do puzzles or multis.

To which it seems everyone agrees. So to quote someone….”What’s the point?”

Hmm. Are you stirring the pot, or asking a question? OK, I’ll go with the latter.

Hopefully I’ll get the info across to a couple of cachers, new or old, who may not have known or thought about this before.

Not stirring the pot, but you are usually advocating something and in light of my (albeit-foggy) recollections of comments you had made about whether there are too many puzzles and so on, I was trying to figure out what you might be advocating behind this PSA.

Also, you focused on a specific cache (or at least used it as the launching point), so it’s probably reasonable to assume that someone (i.e., the cache owner) would digress off the purported generic topic.

Are they looking for a short, scheduled presentation? Or being there all day at the expo? It sounds like they are looking for someone to be a part of a booth that’s already going to be there?

I personally don’t know where to begin with this having never been involved in any sort of geocaching presentation. Does someone in a more official capacity want to get involved so that we can see if this is an appropriate thing for the WGA to be involved in and that it is handled appropriately?

This is why most of our new caches are either puzzles, or high terrain caches, etc. It filters the gene pool. Yes, I do not want every cacher to find our caches. So there, I said it.

I looked at the site and, like Lone Gunman, I’m not quite sure what’s being asked here. Could you provide more detail?

At one time the Board considered both maintaining a list of volunteer presenters by region, as well as creating an online system for submitting and tracking requests for presenters. I think I still have the preliminary designs for these two things sitting around somewhere.

I guess I am not thinking of anything overly complicated here because the incidence of requests is not that great. In fact, I am basically envisioning a “list of people,” so that when a question gets posted to the forums requesting help in Anytown, WI, we have a designated person handling Anytown who can be assigned the request, rather than waiting for someone to pick it up off the forums. I guess there is a question about how a request would get made and some diligence needed to identify these requests or potential opportunities.

Perhaps this could simply be an extension of what the Community Education committee already does and there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Outside its general mission, I’m not quite sure what the committee does, because, as I mentioned, even though I’ve apparently been on it for nearly a year, I’ve haven’t been contacted about any needs (which may itself point to a lack of need for this whole idea!), and I don’t have access to the committee forum. In other words, perhaps the limited resources of the association should not be spent on this effort if there is little need and, therefore, little opportunity for benefit or return.
