Nah, the top one is from seldom seen’s sloppy seconds in Jan 09, and the bottom is Nifty Fifty from Feb 08 using an underwater camera.

    Here’s one that has the available-in-winter attribute…

    And one that doesn’t…

I have the sporting-goods-store aluminum frame ones as described and they worked well. When I was out with CSI he had a pair from LL Bean that had a snap-in shoe. Those are easier to walk with–just one binding point up at the toe, so they pivot more like a racing shoe. However, the binding occasionally got jammed with snow. And of course you’re limited by having to have the special shoe/boot.

Knowing the etymology of “craphas”, for pronunciation I split the word between the P and the H. Are there those of you who are looking at the word and making the PH the usual blend and saying “craffas”? 😉

I can’t wait till this word starts coming up in spelling bees now!

It’s actually crah-PAHS, with the accent on the second syllable.

Are you sure? Sounds like one of those regional differences to me, like you can tell what part of Wisconsin someone is from by how he/she says “craphas”.

The bubblers always freeze when the craphas starts falling, which means you best head inside for a glass of pop instead.

    kinda like “FAVRE”

Hey that’s no joke! Da wife and I were vacationing in Paris quite a number of years ago and they had this “NFL express” type broadcast on where they cut out all the commercials and in-between play stuff so that a 60 minute game actually lasted just 60 minutes.

Anyway, I had no idea what the French announcer was saying except for the occasional instances of “Brett Fah-vray” 😆

Yeah, it was funny, but my French was even funnier. 😳

Yeah but I’m still not disabling our island caches. 😛

Actually for “Osprey Island,” they open up a road across it in the winter. Like Ice Road Truckers, Shawano-style.

Still freaks me out to even walk across it though… 😯

If we’re traveling NOT for the sole purpose of geocaching, we will tend to only hunt caches that are right on the way or fill in a new spot on the map, particularly when cruising. Again, this is for the stated question of a vacation that is not planned for caching, so we stay focused on the objective of the vacation.

What does an official craphas measurer look like?

Our level of craphas alternates between 0″ on the wide open spots and 4′ on the drifted spots, one of which unfortunately covered about 1/4 of our 20′ wide, 270′ long driveway 8O. Got a 48″ wide blower on the ol’ Johnnie but it was still slow going. It’s a good thing I’m semi-retired…

Not too play devils advocate but you disabled a bunch during deer gun. Isn’t that taking on safety of the cacher?

I actually thought about this believe it or not. I’ve gone back and forth over the years on disabling for hunting. Some years I have and some I haven’t. Honestly I don’t keep up with all the hunting seasons so if I disable for deer, why not the (never-ending) waterfowl season? Or T-zone or whatever? Looking back, it’s probably a waste of time to try to do it at all.

Even so, I think disabling for weather is different. We have two caches on islands where the lakes usually freeze over but, as the saying goes, ice is never “safe.” We have one cache on an island in Green Bay where quite often there appears to be ice all the way out to the island but you’d be a fool to try to walk to it. Nevertheless, I have no intention of disabling any of these.

Regarding the container issue, seems like overkill to me, though I understand the concern. We have broken 😳 , and have had broken 😡 , a few caches ourselves due to their simply being brittle, carelessness aside.
