Can someone tell me how to search for POIs by a different location than where we currently are using the unit? In other words, I want to find hotels, restaurant, whatever, in a specific city. I just can’t figure out how to do this. 😳

I’ve been reading this thread with interest, especially after having seen the Oregon 550 at geowoodstock. Today I finally made my decision, and am making the switch from Magellan to a Garmin Oregon 550. My Magellan still works pretty good, but I was disapointed that I can no longer upgrade the maps, and that Magellan no longer even provides repairs for this unit. I think that caching is about to get a whole lot more fun. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences with this model.

I predict you will not be disappointed with this unit! There is a learning curve but it’s pretty fast.

    Is it a micro coin?

Here is a cache: GCTACH that is right by Bellin.

If the coin is too big to fit in there, I would suggest giving it a drop and retreival from this cache, and then placing it in this cache: GC1BBAZ which commemorates the Bellin run so would be a nice follow-up.

I don’t know if someone should bring this to the attention of the BOD. I know gc and WGA are technically different things but WGA is about geocaching in Wisconsin.

I’ve reached out to the scouting rep as has AstroD apparently but I’m not an official spokesperson or whatnot.

It would be nice to get some preemptive clarity via outreach rather than deal with issues after they occur.

BOD, you out there? Or is this not an issue?

Here’s kinda the “non technical” way of thinking about it.

-Your picture has to be “On the Internet” somewhere. This can be on a photo sharing site (photobucket), your own website (http://www.mywebsite.com/photo.jpg), or even on another website you don’t own. The problem with these options, particularly the last, is that they are subject to being changed when you least expect it! That’s why we tend to first upload the picture we want to the cache gallery itself, because it will be there as long as geocaching.com is there.

-You need to put a line of code in the cache description that says where to find the image. The simplest code is where “details” is the location where your picture lives.

-To find out the “details,” go to the image on the Internet, and right click it (usually). For instance, try it with our avatar to the left. Choose “properties” from the menu list, and it will show an address. That big mess of stuff is what you need.

From there, you can tinker with how the image displays, etc., but at least that will get it on your description page. Just be sure to click the “HTML” box when you are working on the page description.

Here is one thread on this:

    http://wi-geocaching.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7814&highlight=image+cache

The advantage to putting the image in the cache gallery first, then linking to that image to display it on the cache page, is that you always know where that image will be hosted and it is “connected” to the cache page, versus living on another site like photobucket, the WGA album, or wherever.
