Don’t forget about GR8 coffee places too. ๐
Hmmmm…. knowing that you LOVE puzzles I have an idea. ๐
How about getting someone to set up a series of 8 caches that you somehow choose randomly (GR8 math probability). ๐ฟ Each cache contains the name of one of the candidates. The first five names you find are the ones you vote for. โ
Since I’m interested in getting new members and keeping members, as well as activating members, my three things would be:
1. Plan, Publish, and Distribute pamphlets about our Association. These would be handed out at Events and classes, and even placed in caches so that we got the word out. Have stickers made to be placed on cache containers that state this cache has been placed by a WGA member (similar to the logo on the cache page). Different sizes for the different size caches. ๐ฎ
2. Host new member events throughout the state that focus on this website as well as other aspects of the sport(paperless caching, route planning, different GPSrs available and how to use seminars). ๐
3. Welcome materials for the new members (and at this time, the existing members) including; nametag, lanyard for compass or GPS, logging pen or pencil, etc. ๐ก
I have a few caches that have additional log requirements and will delete logs after sending a reminder email that a part is missing. If it isn’t sent in a timely fashion I will then delete the log. ๐
I will not claim a cache unless I have the required pieces. I went to an Earthcache here in Milwaukee quite awhile ago but my camera didn’t work. I need to go back and take the picture. Sometimes I think the cache owner is expecting too much (an Earthcache I did in Kentucky had 18 parts to complete) but then it’s up to me to decide whether I want to do it or not. It’s all about integrity! 8)
If I put on a TB tag will you take me along? This cold is a drag! ๐
Just under three months of caching I became a member of WGA in December 2004. That was quite awhile ago but I think I found it through a link on a cache page. I have primarily been a “lurker” on here, checking out what’s happening in the state, not really posting anything until now. I have continued to come back to this site for information and links to useful geocaching sites. Thanks for the question!
Oh darn! Renee took mine! So…
How about…. what strategies or methods do you incorporate into your problem solving/decision making (I don’t mean math problems ๐ ) when asked to look at a situation?
1. What got you into caching and how long have you been doing it?
In August of 2004, I saw a short segment on TV about a new activity (geocaching) for teens and thought it sounded like fun; using technology, going to interesting places, using your brain and finding hidden treasure. A few weeks later, Lego Lover, who had only done a few caches herself, announced she was going geocaching and I invited myself along. Temperature was around 104 and off we went to do a multi. Met up with Trudy and the Beast while at one of the waypoints. I thought that it was a GR8 activity, with GR8 people involved. I was hooked! ๐
2. What area of the state are you from?
I live in the Southeastern corner of the state, in the Northwest corner of Milwaukee. I also have a one room schoolhouse in the Southwestern corner of the state about 20 miles north of Richland Center.
3. How much of the state have you geocached in that is away from your home area??? of 72 counties?
Iรขโฌหve never really checked to see how many counties Iรขโฌโขve done (and should probably do that sometime). I have cached as far north as Fremont and Appleton, west to the Mississippi and east to Lake Michigan.
4. How far from home are you willing to travel for events and how far in the past have you traveled to go to an event?
Iรขโฌโขm willing to go anywhere in the state to attend an event. I have not attended a mega-event (yet) but I have attended events in Illinois and Iowa as well as the events at Wildcat Mountain, in Appleton, Waukesha, Kenosha, West Bend, etc. I love events! ๐
5. Are you members of any other geocaching association: Michigan’s MiGO, Minnesota Geocachers, GONIL, Big bob’s bulletin board, etc?
I am also a member of GONIL.
I’ve thought for several days after initially reading this question in hopes that I wouldn’t sound redundant and repeat others answers…
What has been done well? To me the most obvious improvement is the increase in the cohesiveness of the group. This past year was the first time (to me) that the state geocachers felt like a bonded group with substance. It takes time and good leadership to bring a group of people together with a common interest. I feel this has finally come about. It’s rare (or nearly impossible) that a large group of people over a large area would agree 100% of the time on 100% of the issues so that isn’t expected with a large organization, but in the past year WI geocachers have come together and made important decisions (some of which were difficult and not well received) to move the association forward. It isn’t just about the caches, it’s also about the cachers!
What needs to improve? Steps have been taken to better communicate with other caching related organizations but not enough has been done. As the group that represents all WI cachers we need to work with law enforcement groups, park and rec supervisors, DOT administrators, etc so that our sport of choice is supported and understood. Many individuals have attempted to get lines of communication opened and continue to work at reaching the many institutions that would or should want to work with us, however as a large organized group we have a presence that could bring about these connections more quickly. This is a strength that we have not made good use of – yet!
A mega geocaching event in the state would be terrific. We’ve had quite a few large events in WI. I have assisted at many large events and know that they are well received. Events require many people and man hours to pull off and do them well. I think WGA would be the group of people that offered those man hours and volunteers while assisting a core group that worked with the local community and area hosting the event.
It’s a very forward looking thought to be considering the hosting of a mega event. I just don’t think that WGA would be the vehicle to take us there at this time.
I also have to agree with Renee (AuntieNae) and Dave (Team DJ) on this one. I think that education opportunities are key and because I believe that I assist at classes as often as possible as well as offer opportunities to groups that express an interest in the sport. I do want to add my extra two cents in here as well. . . As an organization we need to be proactive and purposefully offer a greeting to new people and assistance to them. We need to find ways to help new cachers in our state as well as a way to welcome out of state cachers to WI. I try to do this as an individual by replying to logs written to my caches when I see a new caching name or a mention of being new to geocaching or to the area. Mayber an outreach committee would work to fill this need.
1. Candidates, do you like our new Logo?
2. If so, please state why. If not-so-much please also state why.
Yes I do like the new logo. It’s got a strong look to it. It’s bold. It was one of the several I picked in round one, but not the one I picked for round two.
3. Were you in favor of changing the group’s logo?
Change is good. Our group is changing and we needed to move forward with a new logo to represent us. -
