  • in reply to: School TB’s coming again soon! #1894949

For some reason, the Computer Cache does not get a lot of traffic. I’ll probably put some in there this weekend, but they will move out to St. M-M if they sit too long.

The first TB’s from our school kids went into our Seton’s St. M-M cache ( GC17508 ) in Waupaca tonight. Tomorrow and Friday, another couple of batches of 10 – 12 will be added to this Waupaca cache, as well as our Seton’s Eagle Nest cache ( GC13EA5 ) just west of Menasha at Hwy 10 & 76.

So many of you were very gracious putting out extraordinary efforts last year moving these TB’s out into the GeoWorld. Thank you so much! Travel Bugs were, and will be, a central theme in our 6th grade. It is pretty cool when kids enjoy their com arts writing assignments, which they do when they are writing about TB’s or to GeoCachers!

So we are started putting TB’s out, and are putting out the call to all of our Fox Valley and central WI caching friends – come and get ’em! We’ll have close to 65 to get moving, so don’t be shy about grabbing several. And remember, these ambitious missions are written by 11 year olds… they’ll be thrilled to get them underway, as long as they are pointed in the right direction – even if it’s just a few miles at a time.

Thanks a lot. Grandpa Jim & the SetonCachers2

in reply to: Most Mileage on a Travel Bug #1895393

Grandma’s Chevelle TB has over 14,000 miles on it, and it’s still going. My canoe TB was turned loose at the same time, but it disappeared with less than 500 miles on it.

But one of our school TB’s that went out about a year ago has over 26,000 on it already. That’s the mileage leader from that batch of 60. At the other end of the TB spectrum, 3 of the school TB’s from that group lasted a week, and got muggled with 12 miles on them!

We’ll be starting to send out another 60 from school in the next few weeks. Hopefully we’ll have some more good stories to tell.

We had a school TB disappear from a cache down in Texas. One cacher was absolutely sure he had put it in, but somebody a day or two later said it was not there. Lotsa emails went out, but nobody knew where it was. So we eventually gave up on it.

Over a year later, a rookie cacher on their first find logged picking up our TB. They picked it up in a lonely Texas cache which hadn’t been found in over a year, which was pretty close to the one the TB was logged into.

Apparently it was just a case of logging a TB into the wrong cache, something which can happen easily. And a good lesson for us – take good notes when on a cache run involving lotsa trades, caches, and TB’s.

Our son and daughter-in-law live in Marquette. Every time we go up to visit, we enjoy going out cache hunting.

We posted a similar endorsement to Trekin’ & Birdin’s message about a year back. We fully agree that the Marquette and Ishpemming area is definitely a worthy destination. The hides are mostly creative, unique, and in pretty cool locations.

in reply to: Iron County Heritage Festival Geocaching Event #1892640

Does this event route one all over Iron County? What would you estimate the total miles and time to complete all ten?

We are heading up to the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage for 6 days of canoe / kayak camping tomorrow. Doing some geocaching is always a part of these trips!

    Thanks, cYa, Grandpa Jim

Gram just pulled a deer tick off her shirt after doing a bit of gardening this evening. We see them and regular ticks quite often around here, just from being outside. We have learned to be very diligent doing tick checks.

Like others, we found quite a few while caching this past weekend. But we prefer to enjoy the outdoors and be smart about ticks rather than stay cooped up inside and be paranoid about them. Yup, they are gross, but after awhile, they are just another pest to deal with.

in reply to: Getting new cachers connected with WGA #1887007

I try to send a short note to anyone who hits one of our caches. If I notice that they are a rookie, I welcome them to the sport, and I also put in a plug for the WGA. I have not kept track, but I know at least a few of these folks have showed up as WGA members soon after.

in reply to: Snow depth questions….. #1885100

We were in Marquette, MI this past weekend visiting our son and wife. 15″ overnight snows are the norm, but we agreed that there is no more snow up there right now than we have in Waupaca. Unusual winter for us and them.

in reply to: Garmin -> Computer? #1884294

I was watching these on ebay about a month ago, when we were shopping for a GPS for our newly addicted grandson. The Legends with any accessories ALL were going for > $100 by the final bell. Way too much!

We ended up with a terrific deal from a fellow cacher responding to a note left on these forums. It is an older Magellan (about equivelent to a Legend) which works great, and the kid is thrilled.

I’ll play with the uploading Sunday when we get home. I want to get this sent in and fixed before winter ends in July…

Yes, we have the cord, and we use EasyGPS to download waypoints from GC.com.

Yes to the comments about middle schoolers as well!

The busted GPS is a blue Legend. They were on sale around here this fall for $135.00, which included a set of topo cd’s. I have not seen them any cheaper, but at $79.00 I’d consider another one. I have been very happy with this GPS.

BTW, this was being used in an educational setting. This was an end-of-the-quarter minicourse at the middle school where I teach.

It will be Sunday evening before I can fiddle with backing up the data. We have lots going on between now and then. If anybody has any more specific advice on the particulars of the back-up procedure, I’d appreciate hearing it.

    Thanks a lot. Jim

in reply to: Virus warnings? #1882875

I re-read our in house Geek Squad’s message today. Apparently there is a Yahoo Anti Virus which was also acting up, showing the same false positive.

I’ve been using Computer Associates eTrust Anti Virus for a couple or 3 years at home. It has performed well, this has been the first issue I’ve had. It is also installed on our school network, serving somewhere around 500 pc’s. No complaints there, either. It has captured and quarantined various infected files or emails, and to the best of my knowledge, has not allowed any infections to get past.

No complaints from me about this program, although I did kind of luck out finding the fix quickly. Otherwise, it would have taken until my automatic updates in the middle of the night.

in reply to: Virus warnings? #1882872

Late last night I remotely checked our school geocaching email account we use for our 60 student TB’s. In there was a note from our sysop discussing the same virus issue I was having. Apparently it is a false positive, and is only coming through on pc’s protected by Computer Associates eTrust Anti Virus and one other. Some websites accessed through the school network were generating the same warning about the same virus. I did an immediate download of the latest rather than waiting until the scheduled one at 3:00 am, and the problem was solved.

    Thanks for the responses.

Best wishes to all for a happy and prosperous 2008!

in reply to: WANTED: PaddleCaches #1882715

Ahhhhh, cache searching while paddling – combining two of my passions!

GC144E4 Northwood Island Cache. This cache is in northern Oconto County, WI. Not particularly awesome, but it does require paddling to get to the island. And there are several other great caches in the immediate area.

There are at least a couple caches on the Michigamme Resevoir northwest of Iron Mountain, MI which may be paddled to, altho they are on the mainland. We have also paddled to caches while camping on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage in Mercer, but these also were on the mainland.

There is a series of five or six micro caches along the Little Wolf River in Waupaca County, leading to a nice ammo can final. These are along the shore, but all can be easily reached while paddling the river. Do a 54983 search, and look for the LWR caches.

I’m thinking a lot about my canoes and kayaks these days! Can’t wait for the spring thaw.
