Yeah, we’ve been talking about meeting up in Oconto Cty for how many years now? When we gonna do it?

Our problem cache is the Jones Springs Multi, GCK3GQ . It’s a nice one, not done real often, but we’ve gotten lots of good compliments on it. It’s real frustrating when somebody goes to the effort to do it, pays $5.00 to park, and can’t get started (or keep going) because of those who get their kicks by messing with other people’s stuff. I agree, it’s crap!

We hunt micro’s occasionally, but overall, we prefer something larger full of stuff. We have been noticing lately a lot of pretty empty ammo cans, but lots of visitors in the log book. It would seem there are a lot of cachers who are not trading fairly.

One of our caches has a sign attached – “Don’t trash this cache! Trade often, Trade up.” with a picture of a broken top with the red slashed circle. The sums up our point of view.

I once got an email from a non-cacher advising me he had ‘happened’ upon one of our multi caches out in the forests of Oconto County, and that it was busted up. Sure enough, when I checked it, it looked as tho somebody had used it for target practice with a .22.

I have always wondered if this was his sublime way of bragging about shooting up our cache… On the other hand, we did appreciate knowing it needed attention. The next two times one of the legs of the multi got muggled, we did not know it until the next cacher found it. BTW, these mugglings must have been done by somebody informed, as everything was well off the beaten path and quite unlikely to have been discovered accidently.

TB’s? Out of a group of four, 2 have just plain disappeared, and one was swept away in a flood. The other is still going, and has >12,000 miles on it. Go figure, eh?

in reply to: Caches in Waushara County #1735135

Perhaps suggest the Waushara parks boss open discussion with the Waupaca County Director of Parks and Rec. Altho Waup. Cty. does not have any official policy as far as I know, the Director is open and receptive to GeoCaching. Gram and I have discussed this with him several times, in fact, Gram sees him often as they work in the same building. There are several caches on county properties, and there have been no issues to date. I am pretty sure we’d be an initial point of contact in the Waupaca GC community if there was problems.

Sorry to hear Waushara is being shortsighted.

in reply to: Problem with Groundspeak #1875309

First of all, thank you very much to all who have spoken up in support of the projects we have going at school. The emails and postings here have been very encouraging and much appreciated.

Follows is an edited version of what I sent to the ‘contact at groundspeak’ email address today. I’ll be interested to see if it generates any action or response.

    “Hello –

I recently requested a quote for the purchase of 70 Travel Bug dogtags for use as a school project. My email was answered by a B… R… from Groundspeak. He advised of a **% educational discount (unadvertised), and sent a code to enter during the ordering process.

I did the math, and figured we could order the 70 needed, pay the shipping and handling charges, and still stay within our budget. I placed the order and entered our code as directed, but immediately saw that the **% discount was not computed, and our bill was up to $***.**, almost $30.00 too high. I immediately emailed Mr. R… advising of the glitch asking for a remedy, and got no reply.

Since then, I have emailed B… R… 3 or 4 more times, and have gotten no response from him. My emails were replies to one he sent me, so I am reasonably sure the address was correct, plus nothing bounced back.

I have also attempted to resolve this by phone with Groundspeak. One time I gave up after getting bounced around the automated answering machines and then sitting on hold for one-half hour. Another day, I did connect with a human being who claimed that Groundspeak had no responsibility, and he referred me to another outfit who he said actually sold the tags. Their phone system was terrible, whatever numbers I keyed in from the menu were ignored and just bounced me back to the original greeting. All in all, I wasted over an hour of my cell minutes trying in vain to straighten this out.

Today this charge is on my VISA credit card bill. I have directed them to pay to you $***.** for the TB tags (70 tags @ $4.25 = $297.50 minus **% ($**.**) = $***.**) plus the computed s/h charges of $13.09, for a total of $***.**.

I am sorry this is a hassle for you and me. I can appreciate website technology not working on occasion, but I addressed this immediately, and several time subsequently, and this could have been resolved easily in a timely fashion. I am disappointed at the mix-up, but am very unimpressed with the lack of response to a legitimate complaint about your failure to live up to a quoted price.

I sincerely hope this is an isolated incident, and not indicative of the way Groundspeak does business.

in reply to: ticks, Ticks, TICKS !!!!!!!!!!!! #1875778

Lots and lots and lots of them in the Tomahawk area the last few days. Did not keep a count, but it certainly was in the dozens per person. We stayed on top of them with numerous body checks per day. We did find a few deer ticks attached, both the little bitty nymphs and the adults, and we are keeping close watch on the bite sites.

Are the nymph deer ticks potential Lyme transmitters, or just the adults?

Grandma and our adult daughter were at our cottage just west of Townsend Thursday night. No problems there other than no electricity for awhile, but it was scary… Certainly our thoughts and prayers are with those who suffered loss, we consider ourselves very fortunate.

OK, I’ve tried the phone routine several times, several days, it just is not working. An automated answering system is in place at Groundspeak, apparently in something other than the Queens English. When I finally punched enough numbers, and eventually got through to Customer Service, they refered me to another vendor (even though the price quote was from Groundspeak). They had no interest in trying to talk to me. That vendor’s answering system doesn’t work, just keeps endlessly playing the same greeting, and ignores whatever menu numbers are entered.

Can somebody please give me Jeremy Irish’s email address?

    Thanks,

in reply to: Eating Joints in Waupaca #1874219

Well, I’ve never had one myself, black & strong is my preference, but Gram thinks there are a couple or three specialty coffee shops along the main drag in King. I’d bet one of them would be your best bet.

To get to King, exit the park and turn right on Rural Rd, and go all the way east to Hwy 22. Turn left on 22, go north past the Dayton Town Hall to the signs for Hwy QQ and the King Vet’s Home. Turn left, drive into King and check out the ‘Strip’, our own mini version of the Dells. All kinds of interesting little places, but alas, no caches.

in reply to: Upcoming WIS 54 Construction #1770642

The sign on Hwy 10 in Waupaca says Hwy 54 is open to the west all the way to Hartman Creek State Park. The sign was up there last night, and has been since the project began. I would not anticipate any problems.

As I understand it, the constructiopn starts at the Waupaca-Portage County line, which is a bit west of the park.

Hope everybody has a lot of fun, we enjoyed the last campout here in Waupaca. We’ve had out-of-town plans on the calendar for many months and won’t be able to attend.

in reply to: Expanded Membership Categories #1872977

Just as a piece of info… I am a member in good standing of the Michigan Geocaching Assoc (MiGO). I’ve been a WI resident my entire life, but when our two kids lived in the U.P., we got up there quite a bit and found a whole bunch of caches. Our residency was never questioned.

We never expressed any interest in their politics, BOD elections, etc. Our only forum postings were in regard to specific caches, areas we wanted to cache hunt in, etc. I guess we’ve been pretty much closet members of MiGO, and only signed on, as I recall, so we could use the forums. We consider our ‘real’ GeoCaching membership to be with WGA.

It seems to me we also hold membership in another state geo-organization… maybe Florida??? Same reason, so we could communicate through their forums prior to a trip down there when some geocaching was anticipated.

Some states make it pretty easy to sign up. Is this just to jump their numbers? But it would water down their memberships as well.

I do like the point that right now, the way we have it in the WGA, it can be stated that WGA truly represents WISCONSIN GeoCachers. Per my personal experience, neither Michigan or Florida can make that claim…

in reply to: PSA-Ticks are out! #1873248

I just pulled a deer tick off my shirt after some yard clean-up this morning. These are the teeny ones which have the potential to cause Lyme disease. You really need to look carefully to find ’em, and they are small enought that they are not always felt as they crawl. This is the second time already this year, they are out pretty early.

From tonight’s (Appleton) Post Crescent, Police Blotter:

City of Neenah, dated Feb. 28:

“Suspicious situation, woman living in the vicinity of Pendleton Road and Breezewood Lane reported seeing several people in an open field and was afraid it might be some kind of gang activity. Officers discovered that what the caller observed was an adult scavenger hunt.”

Is this anybody we might know?

How about a croquet ball? But I’m not sure where you’d find just one…

in reply to: Etrex repair #1768926

    The rest of the story…

After a few emails back and forth with Garmin, I was told they’d be happy to take care of the problem under warranty, even though the GPSr is several years old. I expected them to send a new rubber band and some kind of adhesive, but they asked for the unit to be sent to them. A few days later, I got a brand new (or maybe refurb?) etrex back from them, certainly not the one I sent in which had engraved identification on it.

I am pretty impressed with this level of customer service on a $75.00 entry level piece of equipment.

    Thanks, Garmin.
