  • And besides all the other nice words, a big thank you for all the caches you guys have put out up north! Oconto & Marientte Counties and the neighboring areas ought to be a real destination for high quality caches. We appreciate all you’ve done to make it a real go-to place! Hopefully more of you downstate folks will come up to God’s Country and hunt some really cool caches.

Gram prefers our pop-up camper at a minimum, which I like too. But I am also happy in my Eureka Timberline tent out in the boondocks of Sylvania or Ely or Ontario.

This is exactly what we have done with some TB’s we’ve had awhile. We leave for Florida today, and are taking some bugs from up nort’ here. In each case, the owners were happy to have us sit on their bug for a month or so, because we would be putting around 1500 miles on it all in one shot, or be helping it along on it’s mission.

As the owner of some bugs which just sit and languish for way too long, either in caches or in the hands of cachers, we have become more aware of extending courtesies to other travel bug owners. This includes attempting to fulfill stated missions as well as timely moving of the bug.

Off the soapbox and onward to the airport. Merry Easter to all and God Bless!

    Hi, Mel –

    Welcome to GeoCaching!

Sean 71 lives in Metz, Gram & I are in Waupaca. There are several others living in the area, too. Lotsa nice caches in the neighborhood, we’ll have to look for an opportunity to link up for a hunt.

Thanks, all. Eagles don’t hibernate in small caches, and kids aren’t patient. Sounds like both will be happier soon, eh?

in reply to: Let’s pitch the snowshoes!! #1748429

We’ll be at Canoecopia Friday evening & all day Saturday. I know of at lest 3 others who will be there also. Maybe we should try to set up a Paddlin’ Cachers meeting. Suggestions?

I went out with my snowshoes today to get readings for a cache we are getting ready to put out. There was enough snow, but I was along a local river, thinking the same thoughts about my kayak. This little touch of warm weather is really whetting my paddling appetite! I usually don’t start getting the itch too bad until Canoecopia in March. Any other paddling cachers going?

Interesting discussion… Some who have posted on this thread have not responded to emails I’ve sent them at various times… It’s good to read all the different perspectives so we all can improve in this fun sport. Grandpa

in reply to: Bears in your caching area? #1748262

We have seen bears pretty close up from our deer stands in the Pembine and Antigo areas. They are fun to watch, and a rare treat indeed! We’ve also seen logs of a bear siting near our cache in Oconto County.

Bears are becoming more numerous statewide, and are being seen in new areas besides the northwoods. A large one was hit by a car on Hwy 10 just west of Waupaca this fall, and another big one was taken by a hunter very close to Hartman Creek State Park outside of Waupaca this year.

My understanding is bears are not normally interested in interacting with humans, and will usually hurry off when noise is made. The presence of cubs in the spring, and food can change this. We are alert when out in the woods, and keep a scrupilously clean campsite when out in the wild. Food packs are hoisted up well out of reach. The pepper spray suggestion is good. It will become a part of the GeoJunk we pack!

Thanks for the good stories and good hints.

Sounds like fun! We’ll stay at our cabin a few miles away, but can’t wait to be a part of this. Pencil us in, we’ll start planning on it.

Thanks for the kind words… looking for compliments was not the intent of the posting, but we sure appreciate them.

I teach in a middle school in the Fox Valley. We did this as a 1/2 day ‘mini-course’ celebrating the end of 1st quarter. The other teacher who helped was on her initial caching event, although her son and daughters have cached several times with their aunt. (One of their family Christmas presents is going to be a GPS, so it sounds like another member of our ‘family’ is joining up).

We’ve introduced a lot of kids to this great sport, and have enjoyed this almost as much as doing the caching ourselves!

in reply to: Up Nort’ caches #1741650

There are actually several caches almost within walking distance of Camp U-Nah-Li-Yah. We have done them during the warmer months, but do think most would be winter friendly. And we have completed some of the others in the area in a foot of snow.

And now, Miata, we will be nearly neighbors up north, along with several other GeoCachers.

in reply to: Technology…. Where do you stand? #1747875

I teach computer ed, and lost my big collection of antique computers after my former district ran out of money and laid a bunch of us off. Now I am starting up another collection… So far, I have a TRS 80 Model 2, a Commodore PET, and a line on an old IBM ‘suitcase’ pc. Anyone care to donate one of these old ones everybody is talking about? They do not have to work, and need to be pre-Pentium, and not Apple. If interested, let’s talk!

    Thanks Grandpa
