  • Well heck – since we’re all tossing opinions out there…

I think if people in Wisconsin want to gather once or twice a year and call it an “event,” then let ’em.

If people at that event want to hide some caches and then hunt for them later on, then let ’em.

If people want to log those caches, then let ’em.

As I had stated on an earlier thread, the “numbers” are so tainted on Geocaching.com that the idea of this being some type of “sport” or “contest” is long gone. Logging caches seems to be way for people to keep track of what they have done. There really is no way to compare your “score” against a another team’s tally.

The vocal minority on Geocaching.com’s forums are not a huge concern of mine. Nor is the opinion of the Geocaching community as a whole. I’ve cached from one corner of this country to other. The rest of America’s caches are no better than ours.

We’ve got something special in Wisconsin, let’s keep it going. Until the Geocaching logging police show up at the next outing, I think we’re safe.

Log ’em, don’t log ’em… who cares?

The numbers have kind of lost their value with me. There is no baseline to measure yourself against other cachers. A couple of examples…

    – There is no practical way to verify finds. The “honor” system in this hobby was gone years ago based on posts in the geocaching.com forums.

    – Wasn’t there some WGA “scandal” last year where groups of people were splitting up and logging caches they didn’t find?

    – Some people log event caches. Others don’t… (let’s not start that debate again…)

    – Some people log multi-step caches as more than one “find.” Others don’t…

    – Difficulty of finds.

    – Do virtual caches count – or don’t they?

    etc, etc, etc, etc…

I like that the software keeps track of the numbers. It’s fun to set goals for yourself. However, it would seem impossible to measure yourself against other cachers as you would be comparing apples to oranges time and time again.

I guess it all comes down to what you think this thing called Geocaching really is. Is it a sport? Is it a game? Is it a hobby? Frankly, Amy and I consider it a hobby. I mean, we could count how many miles Amy and I have canoed over the past 10 years and post it on some website. However – who could verify we actually did it? Who would care? How would we rank the difficulty of the paddle? etc, etc, etc…

I’ve found over time that there are two kinds of people in the world. There are those that can play a game for fun and there are those that need to win. I’ve learned to roll my eyes at those who are competitive and simply enjoy life. It’s too short not to!

I bought the Marmot Eiger 36 this past spring. Did some backpacking with it in both New England and the Rockies over the past year. It’s a great daypack.

Saw that at Thanksgiving and LOVED it. Thanks for the “SNOPES” site. It’s nice to get an explanation about the whole thing!

Thanks to all. I’ve downloaded the latest version and the problem seems to have corrected itself. Thanks!

I’m planning on doing plenty of homework between the brands before investing in my next GPS unit. I’m really starting to lean towards the Garmins. I had a long chat with the GPS salesman at LL Beans flagship store in Maine this past spring when we were out there on a trip. He really sold me that Garmin is poised to take over the industry. It’s been Apple vs. IBM up until now. I really think Garmin is going to be the standard in the near future.

I have a Magellan Meridian Gold right now and I’m relatively pleased. However, I’ll be doing some research before the next purchase.

LOL – This had to be the fastest transaction in the history of the WGA? AstroD stopped by tonight and picked up the cannisters. Plan on MANY more excellent hides by this “stellar” team!

I’ve locked horns with a few people over the years in these forums. I’ve learned that humor and sarcasm are usually misinterpreted (unless you add 15-20 smiley faces, etc…)

However, I do agree that debate can lead to policy changes. Which is good… If you have concerns about the future of geocaching, it’s best to come on-line and hash them out in a forum of your peers. While I disagree with many WGA members about things, I still respect them as people. It’s when folks start flaming posts or start making assumptions about me personally…that’s when I get frustrated.

    Going, going, gone!

Astro-D and I have worked out arrangements. They’re stopping over tomorrow to pick ’em up!

    Great!
