  • An update on the event. Today, I received a donation from the Wisconsin Athletic Club. They donated a $300 gift certificate for a 3-month family metro membership (for non-members). This will be given away as a door prize during lunch. There will also be several one-week membership passes hidden in one of the caches. These are good at any of the WAC locations.

I also retrieved the Going to an Orioles Game Moving Cache. I placed a Jeep TB along with a couple of others. I will be bringing this to the event as a bonus cache to find. I will ask one of the participants to move it along and hide it somewhere.

The group Ranger Boy is referring to is my geocaching class that I took to Glow In The Dark on Wednesday night. We squeaked in so we had just enough time to complete the cache before closing time. We all drove in without stopping at the self pay parking station, which came around to bite us in the rear later. We finished the cache and got back to our cars at 10pm and found envelopes on our cars thinking we all got tickets. Ranger Cathy swung by and had to explain that they are “not tickets”, they were just envelopes for us to pay for parking, which we all gladly took care of right away.

She was such an awesome park ranger. We had to explain to her what geocaching was and one of my participants gave her a handout for beginners to explain what is was. She told us that she thought we were a group of teenagers coming back to do some other activity. She was shootin’ the breeze with us and told us some great park stories on other activity that goes on in the park, which I’ll tell you to use your imagination on. She also emphasized to us that we can save some money by getting a park sticker (way to promote your parks!). We all had a blast. It could’ve been worse.

WOW! Interest in this sale came by quick. There was a taker on the Magellan as the person who owns it contacted me today, so consider this one sold.

Great article. I had someone call me at the Greenfield Rec. Dept. this afternoon after reading the article in the paper. She got a brand new GPS unit as a gift and wants to sell it as she has no use for it. Look at my post in the For Sale message board for more info.

I just added three more states to my count this weekend: Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

in reply to: GPS the movie? #1747087

I can just see it now…caching alone in the woods at night and some serial killer jumps out and murders you. Hopefully the movie won’t turn people off to geocaching or give it the wrong impression. On the other hand, maybe the film makers are making a spin off to the Scary Movie films and making it a comedy spoof of a horror. You gotta think positive sometimes. The prize money seems to be tempting though.

To my knowledge, it’s not a normal practice to log a travel bug without taking it, although I see that a few people were doing it at the last event. Again, “we visited with a travel bug” or “we saw this travel bug at the event” should not count if you don’t take it with you and drop it off somewhere else. If you want to mention that, put it in your log for the cache. Travel bugs are meant to be picked up and moved elsewhere!

I think what Geoffnsara are referring to is those who were copying the TB tag numbers down at an event and logging them in their travel bug count without taking the bugs and dropping them elsewhere. I don’t think they were referring to those with personal travel bugs. Some people missed the whole point here.

I do not log travel bugs unless I take them with me and drop them in another cache. Isn’t that the purpose of travel bugs? At an event, I only log the bugs that I take with me. To me, copying down the numbers and logging them like you found them when you really didn’t have it in your possession is kind of like cheating in a way. I don’t think posting a note on the TB page will increase your TB count anymore, unless you pick it up and drop it off.

What probably happened here is that Geoffnsara logged that they picked up a travel bug, then another team logged the same travel bug after them (grabbing it from Geoffnsara and dropping it back into the event cache). This can really screw things up for the person who has the TB in their possession, as it takes the travel bug out of their inventory when they really have it in their possession and they have to grab it back.

Bottom line is this…don’t log a travel bug unless you plan on taking it and are going to drop it off in another cache. “Visiting” with a travel bug shouldn’t count unless you take it with you.

in reply to: We need you to help with Article of the Month #1747436

How about an article on travel bugs and which was your most memorable or most interesting you have come across? I can probably write one during July or August now that I’m off from school.

Another idea for an article is to interview cachers who are also teachers, and see if any of them include geocaching and/or teaching kids how to use a GPS in their classroom. I’m one educator who does, but I’ve met/seen logs from other cachers in the state who are also teachers and wonder if they do the same.

in reply to: Go Geocaching & win a Jeep! #1737180

Count me in for the jeep travel bugs. I can spread them out over the eastern and southern part of the state.

It was a pleasure caching with the Lost Boyscout again this weekend. He’s well on his way to his 500th already! Congratulations!

in reply to: Travel Bug Swap #1754524

You can count on me to bring some TB’s up to the campout. Looks like I might make my 300th find up there, as well as 300 travel bugs if I can squeeze in a few more this week.
