I had the same problem until I read the manual.

Keep the GPSr “HORIZONTAL” and it will act fine. I still sometimes forget to do that, since I’ve only had mine for a month now.

First, you need to be the owner of the coin, or the owner of the cache that it is missing from.

Click on the coin to see where it has been. In the upper right, there is a pull-down menu which should say “recalculate distance”. Change that to “mark as missing”. Voila!
