My dad told me today that if I find my Geko he would buy it from me (he suggested $10 — the goof!) and my mother thinks the Geko was much easier to understand than the SporTrak. I’m about halfway through the manual. I’ve sort of figured out how to download waypoints.
As to the stress cracks — I have the same dat code of at least one other person who has cracks in their unit (DC 3603) but it seems that the company is fairly willing to correct the problem. Anyway, we’ll see.

I was just reading up on GroundSpeak about stress cracks appearing on some of Magellan’s products……hope mine will be okay.

One that stands out very clearly for me is the morning I attempted to complete Hiking Boots. It had snowed quite a bit the night before (I think it was icy too) and I had gotten to the parking location at about 7:30AM on a Saturday. As I was walking to waypoint 2 I came upon a beautiful sight. All the trees, brushes and other greenery in the area were covered with icy snow (it’s called hoarfrost, I believe) and it was breathtaking.
But for me, every venture out to a cache is treasure in itself. Meeting all sorts of wonderful fellow cachers at events has been treasure as well. This whole hobby just makes me happier than I could possibly imagine, and that’s pretty special.

Thanks for all the help! After attending the breakfast on Feb. 28, my mother suggested that I could place a cache by our property up north. It’s not a huge area, but there are woods and plenty of places to put a cache. At any rate, it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try, and if it fails miserably, I could easily pick it up. It’s just in the planning stage at this point, so we’ll have to see. I’m going to place a cache closer to my home first as my test run.
I love going to northern Wisconsin. I try to go as frequently as my work scehdule allows on weekends. And there are a ton of caches up there that I haven’t gotten to yet!! So I think I’ll be “Up North” a lot this year!

I would certainly be able check on it within 7-10 days, except in winter, when the snows would most likely bury it. (We’re talking Northern Wisconsin!)
I’m not saying it wouldn’t be accessible 365 days per year, I just know from experience that the Wisconsin winters in this area can be brutal, and sometimes the roads become impassible. The area is never closed.
It would definitely be a family friendly cache — not a tough one, except in harsher winter. It would be in a very lovely, highly accessible area, not too far out of a town area and even close to “civilization” (not an urban cache, but there are houses and buildings in the area.)
I know that just having people in the area would affect the environment, but (and I don’t want to give away too much information in case this is a go ahead.) I don’t think it would be so significant as to cause damage per se. It’s private property, owned by my family and they would love to have a cache hidden there (it’s a wooded area).
I think the actual finding of the area would be most of the challenge, but I would make the hunt fun too, but more on the lower end of a challenge (I’m sure it would be a 1/1)
And there would be no potential for finding by non-cachers, as they would be tresspassing! Well, they certainly could walk in the woods, but I’m sure they won’t be — it’s rather out of the way. I would make sure it’s well hidden as well.I’m just sort of throwing this out to see what can be done. To see if it would at all be worthwhile. If I were to place it, would the approver be the one to make the final decision if it’s acceptable?
Does one just go ahead and place a cache, and then wait for approval, or does the area get approved first and then the cache is placed?
I want to be sure my first caches are good!

Today — my fourth time — I went back to the cache location, and almost immediately found the cache! It was right where many of you said it would be. The earlier snow cover was just too much for me to be successful.
I feel so much better
(now, my newest nemeses — Hiking Boots and 94th on 94.)
Thanks everyone for their help!
BecI thought my first find was quite a milestone!

Yay! I just switched my work weekends and I can now come to the campout for sure!! Yay!! I am so excited!!
Bec
I’ll be there too! Might even bring along some folks (my folks!) Maybe will even bring along my super cool geodog Peanut (the greyhound will stay home — his arthritis is bad this time of year.)
Looks like we’ll have great weather too!
Bec
Yikes! That’s scary. Thanks for the warning!
Bec
Thanks! I really do want to go. It’ll all depend on my work schedule though. I’ll know more about a week before the event. I’ve got my fingers crossed though.
Bec
I’ve never been to any of these, so I will abstain.
Bec
I’m scheduled to work that weekend, but if my schedule is light I might just be able to pop up for a while. Can I do that, or would I have to be there the entire weekend?
Bec
Thanks for the help peoples! I still think I was in the right area, but perhaps the weather conditions were not getting me to the cache. I about crawled into the log to find it, but I hadn’t checked along it’s sides. I do recall lots of loose bark. But I think I will wait for better weather to try again. Again, thanks for the help!
Bec
(who wants to take bets that I’m going to try to find it again this weekend?)
Congratulations!
