Maintenance is actually a pain in the butt! Sometimes they’re tough to find yourself! And you do have to replace the log frequently.
In the proper place, they are great a great hide.

Bec… you gotta invite me out to place caches with you sometime. I’d enjoy watching your technique in action!
It’s nothing too impressive actually. My GPSr has the ability to take averages (I’m sure most do), so I just let it sit for 10-15 minutes while I wander around and take pictures. And then I do the walk away and recheck thing that you do.
I’m a very detail-oriented person (again, probably like most geocachers) and probably OCD as well, so I get obsessive about being as accurate as possible when I place caches. Probably explains why I don’t place too many caches 😆
But….if you come to the picnic cache hiding day, you can maybe see my placement “skillz” in action!

I just put out my first caches. On one of them, the ftf said that my cords. were off by 100 yards or so. The next said that they were dead on.
100 yards is a huge amount! But, results may vary.
I did 3 avgs waypoints on the one so it is what it is.
Just for future placement, you may want to get a few more averages. I do between 150 and 200 waypoint averages, and check the coordinates by “finding” the cache several times (often on different day). Works for me.
All the one I have found have been right on a close as a foot up to 35 feet but have had no truble finding any of them.
I consider 35 feet to be as close to dead on as possible. At about 50 feet I tend to put away the GPSr and start looking anyway.

Just remember to be careful in any communication with others on this incident. They are upset and looking to place blame. And many of us are upset and it’s very easy to become defensive. Obviously these people are pretty uninformed as to what geocaching is. Continue to spread the word positively.
I like the idea of a meet and greet. I also like the idea of donating flowers. I really like the idea of taking some of these people out geocaching!
I’m sure you already knew this — sometimes I’m so obnoxious…

Maybe then I’ll actually be able to visit the forums without it shutting down my browser!

But, it also shows how really important it is to get permission — although I doubt it would have been given.
Really glad to hear it was removed! Now let’s put the record straight for the uninformed!

Is this link going to be posted on this site so we all have a quick access to it?
Why, yes!

Ah, well, it doesn’t want to link — go to the left of this screen and click on the Hiding a Cache link.
Just having a computer available for uploading waypoints and cache pages to the PDA is a great thing, but you don’t need it. And you don’t have to get a laptop specifically for geocaching, nor bring it along with you while geocaching.
Some people along the laptop for auto-routing, but I think your GPSr does that?
I think starting out with just the GPSr is a great start. From there, decide what you need to make your journeys easier and/or more enjoyable.

manuals found here
Tried to help someone at the campout with this type unit and failed miserably, but I did find some info for you on the web.
“Waypoints
A waypoint is simply an electronic “address,” based on the latitude and longitude of a position on the earth. A waypoint represents a location, spot, or destination that can be stored in memory, then be recalled and used later on for navigation purposes. Simply think of it as an electronic address. You can create a waypoint at the cursor position on the map, or at your current position while you are navigating. Create a Waypoint These techniques use the Quick Save method, the fastest and easiest way to create a waypoint.
Create Waypoint on Map
1. Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the place where you want to make a waypoint.
2. Press ENT|ENT. The waypoint is saved and automatically given a name with a sequential number, such as “waypoint 001.” The waypoint symbol and number appear on the map.
Create Waypoint at Current Position
1. While you are traveling, press ENT|ENT. The waypoint is saved and automatically given a name with a sequential number, such as “waypoint 002.” The waypoint symbol and number appear on the map. Create a Man Overboard Waypoint This unit has a man overboard feature that shows navigation data to the location where the feature was activated. To activate it, press the ZOUT and ZIN keys at the same time. Your position at the time these keys are pressed is used as the man overboard position. The unit automatically begins navigating to the MOB waypoint. For further details, see this subject in the Easy Mode Operation section.”I don’t know if that helps much — I really only skimmed the manual.

Should we be seaking approval for hiding these boxes in the Madison parks as if they were Geocaches too?
I would definitely seek approval!
Speaking of, I got my treasure box in the mail yesterday — new hide coming soon!

And lots of fun too!

Any chance of Mac compatibility?

Or just wait until the picnic (August 19), and take the whole day to visit this and all the other great geocaches in the area!
Had to do it!
BecI was just at the Dane County Department of Vital Records today. Passports are taking 6-8 weeks on average these days (don’t know about the special Chicago-style passports though).

If I find that I have the day free I would love to help hide some caches. Are the containers provided and do we need to bring swag?
Containers are provided (once I find out who has them from the campout) unless you have a “Special” cache container that you would like to hide for the event.
No swag needed, we will also be providing stampers (once I find out who has them from the campout too!) to be used to mark your cache booklet.
Other information at this time:
I’m thinking of starting cache hiding at 9am at the Nordic trails area (actual spot & coordinates to be determined, but probably very close to the picnic coordinates, as that’s part of the picnic area.Cache hiding will go on all day until we’re done. So if you can’t make it at 9am (that IS pretty early!) come whenever, and we’ll put you to work!
Perhaps we’ll take a little break around noontime for nourishment (any ideas?)
Any other questions?
