In some of my caches I have left Team GrouseTales kitchen magnets for people to take. While supply lasts, you can take one w/o leaving anything behind

    Wow that’s big!

I have had several different versions. Some are customized with the name of the cache on them. Above is the latest version that I am dropping off in caches.

    Amen!

If you think it’s too dangerous to walk on the ice, dont walk on it.

As an avid ice fisherman, I’ve had my share of soakers. The worst one was breaking through on my 3 wheeler. I was glad I had friend along with another ATV to pull me out. (the 3 wheeler floats upside down in case you were wondering)

When I worked at Oconomowoc PD, I was often asked “is the ice safe to go on?” My answer was always NO. No matter how thick it was, even if cars were driving on it. I didnt want to get sued by someone sticking their foot in a hole.

In defense of those voicing their concerns about ice safety, if you notice, you dont see many ice fisherman on the ice right now. Thats because the ice is pourous, irregular and not very safe. Even the die hards, such as I, are staying off most lakes.

Certain times of the year the ice is great. Other times, like now, it isn’t.

Geocaching brings a lot of city slickers into the great outdoors for the first time. They may not be familiar with ice safety issues and techniques. It might be wise to put a warning on the cache at this time.

Once you think that travel is not recommended on the ice, I would post a note on the cache page advising people to wait until ice off.

“Julio and Gallo” page (for all the winers)

But seriously, I’ve seen too many message boards that are nothing but a bi!chfest.

I avoid them like the plague.

Unfortunately in todays litigation happy society, the “officials” a lot of times give you a NO answer (in general).

“Dad can I go to John’s house? NO! How come? BECAUSE I SAID SO!

Asking first may indeed be the “right” thing to do, but I don’t buy a lot of the denials I have read about.

Volunteer trail- minor compared to critter trails. I have seen bunnies make bigger trails than any geocach I ever visited.

Flora- We have 1.8 million deer in the state munching on these tasty flowers.

Liability- If any chunk of land is open to hunting, it should be open to geocaching. Why would I sue the state if I tripped over some tree root in the middle of the forest? Unless offtrail hiking is totally banned from a property, then geocaching should be allowed.

Geocaching has been peacefully existing with nature for over a year now.

Since I am part owner of these lands (as we all are), I don’t feel compelled to ask permission to tread there.

I still like the “Dont ask, Dont tell, Dont damage” idea.

I think if more people ask permission for this, the State is going to think the woods will be a garbage dump.

It would be nice to have a widely published “Okay” from the state, but I would hate to have them put the official kabash on geocaching too.

I’ve worked at law enforcement agencies for over 15 years and have a pretty good idea how the official thought process works.

Personally, I advocate “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t do any damage.”

I remember Yawningdog telling me he asked permission to place a cache at Mill Bluff State Park.

If I have the details right, he had to wait a few hours while they checked with the head Superintendant for the whole state.

They came back with an “okay” and he placed the cache.

That seems to be another indication that the State DNR is allowing it.

I would think that as long as we, as cachers are responsible, they will never know the activity is even going on.

I visited Ken and Robin’s virtual cache at that location.

Such a neat little park. It’s funny that several other people have scoped it out as a cache location.

in reply to: How Will Rising Gas Prices… #1759096

    Good topic.

You know, I’ve been soul searching for quite a while now and feel that Geocaching is very OPEC friendly. Look at all the gas and money we spend on this sport. It is a great form of recreation, unfortunately it involves so much driving to get to caches.

Due to gas demand and gas prices, I’m currently riding my motorcycle everywhere I go. If that get’s too expensive, I’ll start riding the moped . I can certainly afford to pay for the gas, but my vehicle is not friendly to our atmosphere.

I’ve curtailed ALL unnecessary driving until the situation improves. I probably won’t geocache until things improve, unless I’m on vacation.
