    Hope it has:
#3: Must have NMEA communications port availablity, ie serial port, in addition to USB. Need NMEA for interfacing with other items such as auto pilot, radar, APRS.

Yup, I listed it. Beats a pine cone or cat tail.

in reply to: 2008 WGA Elections #1882775

We’ve had lots of nominations, but only about 1/2 have responded to my letters.

Just to be on the safe side, if you’ve received a nomination letter from me and I haven’t answered your reply, please send me a PM. You should get a reply from me the same day. If not, my spam blocker may have intercepted your email to me.

    Thanks.

in reply to: Beer in my cache?? #1880190

I remember finding “snake den” cache in the early days of geocaching. The owner put a shot glass and some unknown liquid in the cache. I guess you were supposed to celebrate the find ???

    I don’t remember driving home 😆

Thanks for sharing your story Furfool. You never know when you will spend the night in the woods. A short hike can turn into a life threatening one.

Whenever we are deer hunting, I go prepared to spend the night in the woods. I have a small quart sized ziplock bag that contains most of my “survival items”. The bag is waterproof, and easy to bring along whenever appropriate.

    My survival bag contains:

    • Mylar space blanket
    • spare compass
    • water purification tablets (in case I run out of water)
    • magnesium fire starter
    • waterproof matches
    • cheap butane lighter
    • fire starter sticks
    • trioxane fuel bars (military fire starters)
    • cheap folding knife
    • about 25′ of orange surveyors marking tape. (works great for marking your trail. Rolls up to the size of a tootsie roll)
    • Small LED light
    • 25′ of strong cord (rope).

Again, this all fits in a quart ziplock bag and can easily be added to any of my packs.

in reply to: Published caches ….which aren’t #1882066

I’ve made the mistake of publishing a cache, then noticing a problem that needed to be corrected. I then put the cache on hold until the problems were fixed. It’s possible to view it during the short time it was active.

in reply to: Please Don’t Geocache & Drive! #1881251

Glad to hear you are ok, and sorry to hear about the accident.

I was on my way home from thanksgiving dinner Thursday night, and there was a small truck swerving all over the road. The guy was taking up two lanes, so I was afraid to pass him on the freeway.

I was just about ready to call him in as a drunk, when I could see a lit object bouncing around on his dash. I figured the goof was watching a dvd player as he was driving. As I got closer, I could see the guy was trying to punch data into a GPS, and the suction mount keep coming off the windshield.

As he was trying to reposition the GPS, he was taking up two lanes on the freeway. It’s a good thing no one was in the lane next to him while this was happening.

It’s funny how little things can seem so important at the time. Repositioning a GPS, looking for a place to do a u-turn, sending a text message, spilling your coffee, reaching for something you dropped, turning around to talk to someone in the back seat. When the timing is right (or wrong), this can spell disaster.

Thanks for the timely reminder Cheeto.

How about the Gauntlet ? 😀

in reply to: Garmin eTrex Vista HCx? #1880594

I had a Vista HCx for about 2 days. This is the one the WGA purchased and donated to Hartman Creek State Park. I didn’t have a lot of time to play with it, but it was pretty nice.

I much prefer my 60Cx. I’ve had several Etrex units, and I’m not too crazy about button layout. I’ve also had problems with the rubber trim on all my Etrex units. They all have torn rubber and held together with tape.

The Vista would be a huge improvement over your Magellen 🙂

in reply to: WGA Logo Referendum #1879460

I believe Apple based the Iphone design off our logo :). We were here first !

It’s hard to vote for a logo change without seeing pix of potential new logos. Our current logo has served us well. I’d be in favor of a change, but only if it’s a great design.

I guess it’s all about how authentic we want them to look. The decoys I saw actually look like a real wild turkey.

    Something like these:

Others types can be considered, but we are looking for something about life size.
