We got a Halloween pathtag from Ferret101 after they caught a fish in Appleton. I do not see it up on the list.

The list only includes one pathtag from each known Wisconsin-based geocacher.  Some geocachers have created 50 or more different pathtag designs.  However, there are now at least five more to add to the list, which will get updated later this Spring – stay tuned!

Bad timing.  I tried to show someone who has never participated in the LCG, but couldn’t get the map to load.  Oh well.

Russ I agree with all of the principles you mentioned.  Using new technologies to identify lonlies (I just updated my Cachly, thanks!).  More traffic to the WGA website.  Easier management.  Greater participation.  But I am a bit confused with one aspect, not with what you said but with what was discussed at the event.  It was pointed out last week at the LCG event that lonlies are defined as caches that remain unfound for 1 year or longer, but then BigJim, the LCG admin, mentioned that it’s not necessarily so.  There are times apparently when the total number of caches not found for one year or more in Wisconsin is LESS than 500, or close to it.  So adopting easier to manage strategies is beneficial, but may not result in increased number of lonlies to be found, which in turn would mean that they’ll still likely be mostly those that are hard to get to (or solve).  Having said that, it still makes sense to pursue those possibilities.

Changing subjects a bit, I noticed that Cachly now offers downloadable “premium” offline maps as well as the “standard” offline maps.  I have already been using the standard offline maps almost exclusively, but now have downloaded the premium WI map and it’s nice!  My new default map to use.  🙂  Thanks again!

I am a bit out of the loop…or loopy, take your pick. Are there any CITOs planned for spring other than the Minocqua one on 5/4, or sometimes there are Earth Day events? I think souvenirs have been offered some years. I wouldn’t be able to organize anything, but if I can get healthy, maybe I could participate!

We’re (That’s Hack1of2 and WisJanine) having our 6th annual Earth Day CITO in the Milwaukee area on the afternoon of Sunday April 14th, 2019 along the shores of Lake Michigan in Sheridan Park.  It’s pretty epic.  It should get published within the next several days or so.  It’s always interesting to see what boat parts and whatnot washes up on shore.  There’s about 1 mile of park land on the street level that needs CITOing, and another 3/4 mile or so at the shore level below by taking the paved switchback path to the dirt trail below.  See pictures of previous CITO’s at Sheridan Park at GC728B1, GC5QCX2, GC7JDMB, or GC6AM7T.

Interesting.  This past week I switched from Internet Explorer being my default browser to Mozilla Firefox, since I.E. is now obsolete and isn’t being supported by Microsoft.  Today I cannot log in to the WGA website with Firefox, 😮 but I can with the outdated Internet Explorer and with Google Chrome.  None of the three, however, will let me post a Lonely Cache Game entry.

I also cannot submit a LCG report.  I tried it on I.E, Firefox, and Chrome.  While logged in, all three lead to the popup window: “Error!  Must be a WGA member or friend in order to submit lonely cache reports.”

When on the main Lonely Cache Game page, the LCG map link does not work when one clicks on “current map”  However, if one knows to click elsewhere it can still load.  We need to repair the broken link.  See screen capture.

Today I made the change from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox being my default browser.  Ever since Microsoft dropped development of IE, more and more websites don’t work or only partially work with it anymore.  The WGA logo wouldn’t load on cache pages, and even eBay wouldn’t work anymore.  I spent part of the morning migrating and organizing bookmarks from one to the other.  Now every page and image loads.  Not a fan of Google or Microsoft’s current browser offerings; they’re okay but I associate them with a lot of drama.

The proposed changes to the bylaws are Hack approved!  However this is a rather unusual set of proposed changes because of the format in which it is presented.  Normally one would see the existing and proposed bylaws side by side for comparison, or a single text with strikethroughs for the proposed discarded wording.  So I looked up the current bylaws and placed them in a two-column document next to the proposed bylaws.  You can view them in the attached PDF file.  Some thoughts:

                          • Vice President’s duties: “Oversee committee chairs and co-chairs for events.”  I like that this was added; it indicates to me a possible return to forming committees, as well as designating who is ultimately responsible.  Nice.

                          • Secretary’s duties: “…record minutes of all meetings to be posted to the WGA website in a timely manner.”  I wonder if this is applicable to ALL meetings or just face to face meetings.  I don’t think I recall seeing reports from the regularly scheduled Google Hangout meetings.  You may wish to slightly change the wording if internet-based meetings are to be excluded.
                          • Secretary’s duties: Maintain a file of … past minutes, newsletter archives and other official documents.”  Where is this file kept?  This would be a treasure trove of history!  I’m guessing it is simply referring to the reports scattered throughout the thousands of posts buried somewhere in the WGA general forums.  But if it is referring to another location or filing system, it would be great to know where it is.

Our latest geocaching goal is to have our 366-day calendar filled a minimum of 10 times.  We’ve had our calendar completed for several years now, but not with double digits.  There are only 13 days for us on the calendar with less than 10 finds.  Today is one of them (we have 7 finds, need 3 more).  Unfortunately, one of those needed dates is February 29th.  We only have 8 finds on that date, and will have to wait until 2020 until it comes around again.  So if all goes well, we’ll have our 10x grid filler completed on 2-29-2020.  It seems so far away…

I’m not yet sure what to make of the new web hosting service.  There are a few glitches.

                              1. With any other web link on my computer, when selecting it (Yahoo, weather, Google, eBay, Amazon, Geocaching, etc.) the address *immediately* appears in the address bar, and the website loads typically with a second or two.  With the WGA website, after selecting the link to go to the website, it takes about 5 to 10 seconds for the address to appear in the address bar, which at first made me wonder if it wasn’t responding at all.  But it did eventually appear and the page then loaded.  I tried this several times with two different browsers (I.E. and Firefox).  I also clicked on about 6 or 7 other websites to see if they loaded “normally” within a second or two and they did.  This is with a fast cable connection at home via Spectrum.

                              2. When posting a message, when I click on “submit,” the page doesn’t change – even after a minute or two.  It just shows you the same view as if you did not yet click submit.  If you assume it didn’t work and then click submit again, still no change.  However, if you then refresh the page, you will see that the message has indeed been posted, and if you did the submit thing twice, your message is posted twice.  My guess is Dawn got fooled the same way, seeing as the two posts immediately before this one are identical.  I tried this with both I.E. and Firefox; both experienced this issue.

                              3. As for overall speed, once I get to the WGA website, each subsequent page loads in about 6 to 12 seconds.  Seems okay, but I’m not sure if it is a significant improvement.  I’m guessing it’s about the same.

Now that the COTM will have one winner per month for the entire state rather than one from each of the 5 regions, has there been any thought given to series of the month?  It sounds like that is being eliminated, intentionally or not.  There are some great cache series out there that with the new format would get lost in the shuffle.  Perhaps a state-wide COTM on a monthly basis, and a series of the month on a monthly, quarterly or semi-annually basis?
