Well, if we’re talking average now, we have 164.

I’m wondering if those stats were just on the “Found It” logs, since some of ours go so long that we have to divide them into log-and-note to get everything we want to say in.
But I still have “more posts than finds”…
No fair, girls use more words than guys. Except when they don’t.
Congrats Pete!
Congrats Pat & Mark – there was almost an actual path for you to take in there!
Very nice, you’re my hero! Well, one of them.

The link to Cache of the Month previous winners does not work.
Never mind, after two misfires, it worked. I guess the third time’s a charm!

A bit of caching was done in Brookfield today.
And those last two are both about 8 to 10 feet up. 😉
Bartrod I do the opposite of what you mentioned. If you load them as POI’s (points of interest), it only gives you limited info, such as the GC number. If you load it as favorites/geocaches, it will show you (if you set it up that way) the GC#, Cache Title, D/T, description, and coordinates. I actually prefer to see that data on my Nuvi.
Having said that, if loaded as favorites, it is potentially trickier to delete them. There are I think three different macros in GSAK that one can use to transfer geocaches to Nuvi’s, not counting the “export to Garmin POI” command in the file menu (which is a point of interest, not a favorite). I’m only familiar with the master reset option to erase the favorites but there may be other ways.
A master reset will erase all favorites and will restore your GPSr to the default factory settings. To perform a master reset on most NUVI’s:
While the NUVI is OFF, press and hold the lower right hand corner of the touchscreen
Power on the device while continuing to hold the display
Remove your finger from the touchscreen when “Erase all user data?” appears and then select “Yes”
The device will now reset, and all favorites will be erased. You’ll potentially need to re-enter your preferences and any favorites you’d like to keep (such as home address)A master reset only takes a matter of minutes so it’s not as bad as it sounds, but you may have to re-enter some information.
The eTrex 20 can in theory hold “up to” 5,000 geocaches if done right, but not 5,000 GPX files. eTrex’s have a limitation on the number of GPX files it can process. When you load geocaches one at a time, it will create a GPX file for each one. However, when you load a pocket query to the device (much better), you will be able to put in hundreds of geocaches that only use a single GPX file. As far as I know Garmin doesn’t state how many actual GPX files it can hold. Garmin does state it can take 2,000 waypoints, but waypoints (LOC files I think) are different than geocaches (GPX or GGZ files). Waypoint files only have coordinates and a name, whereas geocache files have that plus description, hints, etc. Also, I’ve “heard” that if the caches in the GPX files have a lot of content (long descriptions and log entries, etc.) it will take up more memory on the eTrex, which could affect performance. That’s more of an issue with the older eTrex models however, which didn’t have as much memory as the eTrex 20.
We use GSAK to send the coordinates to our Nuvi. When the NUVI (her name is “Trudy”) gets us to the closest parking allowable we then can switch to our handheld GPS units to hike the rest of the way.
1500 finds in one day? Is that doable, even on a power trail?
In a 24 hour period, that’s 62.5 finds per hour. That means a person would have to find just over one cache per minute.
It just cannot be done. It takes time to get to each cache 528 feet apart, find it, retrieve log, sign it, replace log, replace cache, then dash to the next cache.
It just cannot be done.
We did the infamous E.T. Highway in Nevada a year or two ago. It’s two or three thousand caches total and the whole thing can be done in two days if done the way Mister Greenthumb described. We found of total of eight of them; we only went for the ones that had 50 or more favorite votes and skipped the rest. 😀
Wow I wasn’t aware of that one. We’re going to have to solve & find that one soon.
Tomorrow is our 5-year geocaching anniversary. Kim and I will have to grab a few.
FTP (fourth to post) on Friday.
