We’ve put out 34 trackables over the past few years – 12 are still active. About 50% geocoins and 50% TBs. Although it’s disappointing when they go missing, my expectation is actually that most WILL go missing. Those that are still moving are a great pleasure to follow and make it all worth it, and once in a while one pops back up after being inactive for 6 months to a year+. We will continue to put them into play in hopes that a lucky few will continue on. For me that’s a realistic expectation.
A new strategy we’ll likely be adopting in the future is to use less desireable objects for travelbugs so that people hopefully won’t want to keep the objects. If I attach Batman to a TB dogtag it almost certainly will disappear. However if I attach a thimble, a skeleton key, or any routine household item I’m guessing that it will have a better chance of surviving. With coins I’ll just put them into a double-fold plastic sleeve with the other half stating PLEASE DON’T KEEP ME and explaining what a geocoin is. Whatever then happens, happens. 8)
Congratulations on finding a great milestone for 4000. It was great to fill another hole in your d/t grid as well. We’ve enjoyed finding several caches with you along the way.
Thanks much Brian for sharing this great article with us!
That’s outstanding, congratulations!!
That did it, thanks!
I’ll obviously have to read or watch some tutorials to get up to speed with this program. Thanks again!

Congrats Jim & Linda! Just got back from vacation and saw that you had hit the big 4k. Nice timing at the pancake breakfast!
Congratulation bigJim on your milestone. We first remember meeting you at last years cache bash. The day before your milestone butterfly pancake breakfast we were in north western Wiscomsin finding your social butterfly cache!
Congratulations on hitting 1000 finds! We just realized you changed your geocaching name recently as well! We had find saying your new name as fast as possible several times. It doesn’t take much to amuse us.
Congratulations on 45 years of marriage. Glad you had a great get away to celebrate. It is great to know couples like you who are happily married after so many years.
Congratulations Sherry on your milestone. Sounds like you earned this one for sure. What a great tribute cache you were able to find. We have enjoyed being with you for many of those 3000 finds, and hope to join you for many more.
A belated congrats Chris, just noticed this message post.
I remember a year or two ago at the LCG event when you received the sparkly golden ammo box for finding 1,000 caches. You and the girls have really been crusing since then! 😀
Bravo!
I’ve found HUNDREDS of caches with a smartphone. If you have an iPhone, I’d recommend the geocaching app from Groundspeak. Any other smartphone I’d recommend c:geo.
Accuracy is fine as long as you’re not by tall buildings, in the woods, or by power lines. Even in those conditions you can still find the caches, it’s just a bit more work because the phone app may be off a bit by 20 to 40 feet. Sometimes.
You may acturally find more caches by using a smartphone. With a geocaching app on a smartphone you can switch to a satellite view and see a photo of where it’s located, such as the third tree from the street, or the cache lines up with the roofline of the nearby building, or at the end of a fence, etc.
Wow, congrats on the three milestones, and what sounds like a truly exceptional multicache. Now that’s what caching is all about!
