or they don’t wish to share all the information on the WGA application form.

You nailed it. 😉 A person forfeits their right to certain privacies when they complete that form. With so many different admins (which changes periodically, I’ve noticed), other access restrictions for the “private forums” for committee members, etc, I really have no way of knowing who has access to what. I don’t know any of these people here, not one of them– everyone is just a screen name. You wouldn’t disclose personal information to an anonymous person on the phone, or to an anonymous person on the street, so why should I disclose any of my personal information to a handful of anonymous people on the internet? For that reason alone I choose not to be a WGA member.

Thats another thing that irks me.. is those private forums. Even if I were a full member, I still wouldn’t have access to those forums. I just wonder why they’re kept so secretive.

I was a member here, several months ago. but I changed my status from Member to Friend shortly after a certain WGA member made a particular comment that really got me spun up.

I don’t have “Submit Event” as an option. Must be something thats only available to WGA Members (I’m only a friend). Why that would be an option only available to members, I don’t know. Seems like something that should be available to all, since it would benefit all… Yes?

if you have found an event you want to keep track of (see who is coming, any changes, any trackables, etc.), just put a watch on it

Yep, been doing that. 🙂 My watchlist is HUGE!

Here’s the event I found that’s not on the list: GC28DYW
Right in middle of Sandland 😉
Unless I find another event between now and the 13th that’s even closer to home than that one (not likely), the Meet & Greet at Roche-A-Cri will be my first geo event.

Im just a handful of caches away from #333. I’ve been looking, but so far nothing fitting. 🙁

in reply to: Sandlanders Goes Crazy (Eights)! #1929586

The temperature here yesterday was 88 degrees.

Congrats on 888 at an eight legged cache.

Well, technically it is only a 4-legged cache. 😀
I was having a hard time deciding what to name the cache. I wanted something with the word ‘garden’ in it, and Octopus’s Garden was literally the very first thing that came to mind.

Now we know the REAL story 😛

People seem to like the Octopus, so the name stays. 🙂

All the while the signal on your hand held bounces around on those wooded trails under the tree canopy, take in to consideration that all those little jumps (30 feet either side) will have an effect on your total distance traveled.

I’ve inadvertently left my GPSr powered on in the house. In just a short time, the GPS had “traveled” several hundred miles just sitting on the kitchen table.

Got it. Thanks for the help. I just couldnt find the “adopt” page. The process seems intuitive enough.

You want to know the answer, really? It’s because hotdogs are NOT sold in multiples of 10. Hotdogs, like all other meat, are sold by the pound. It just so happens that 10 “standard size” hotdogs equal a pound.

Look at a package of bun length hotdogs.. There are eight in a package, but the important thing to note is that the package is still exactly 1 pound.

Baked goods are a different story. Traditionally, they’re not sold by weight, but by quantity, usually buy the dozen. Sometimes by the half-dozen.
In the case of hotdog and hamburger buns, they’re sold in multiples of 4.

It also may have a lot to do with the packaging. Oblong packages are generally avoided. If hotdog buns came 10 to a pack, they’d have to stack 2 slabs of 5 buns which would make for an awkward, flimsy package of hotdog buns.

2 slabs of 4 hotdog buns makes a sturdy, squarish package of buns.
3 slabs of 4 hotdog buns would also make a nice square package.

Hamburger buns may also have had something to do with it. You may notice Hamburger buns are sold in qty’s of 8, two 2×2 slabs of buns. A nice square package. A 10 pack of hamburger buns wouldn’t work very well at all.

The cache owner wants people to sing “You’ve picked a fine time to leave me Lucille” as they float down the river.

Why don’t I just pack the guitar and everyone can sing it together. Or does that rate just a little too high on the lameness scale?

Abusive seems like a pretty harsh word.

I’m not using the word to be harsh. I’m using it because I feel people are abusing the “WSQ” title and abusing cemeteries for cache placements. Again, they’re NOT parks.

If the cache has no connection to the cemetery, then IMO the cache doesn’t belong there. And I feel very strongly about that!

Im not talking about standing on headstones, just graves (that area that extends about 6 feet in front of the headstone) I won’t walk over or stand on any graves, I think walking over people is disrespectful.

If someone has to stand on a grave to retrieve a cache, then the cache is placed too close to the grave.

Someone else on the forums here posted here a few months ago about a cache that had people standing on headstones.. Thats definitely no good.

in reply to: Parking area co-ords #1927453

I posted parking coords for more than one cache (with good reason) and a lot of people seem to ignore them.

At GC21E2C a few people wanted to travel the shortest distance to the cache, which meant parking along a county highway and getting confronted by a cop. Parking coords were in the cache description from day 1, but were ignored.

At GC24NMC I posted parking coords because I didn’t want people driving all over the cranberry marsh and searching for the cache at the wrong side of the creek. This would be bad news during planting or harvest season.
Even with parking coords posted as both a waypoint and in the description, they were ignored by some, and, as evident in the logs, a significant number of cachers started out at the wrong side of the creek..

If someone makes the extra effort to post parking coords at one of their caches, there is likely a good reason for them.

Do cell phones work in submarines? 😆 😆 😆
    :

In port? Yes. Sometimes, if you’re near a hatch you may get reception if you’re lucky. When you’re at sea submerged with the hatches closed? No.

But when we were transiting on the surface, I was usually one of the guys up on the bridge. I would have my cell phone up there with me.. But I’ve never had reception further than about 12 miles from land.

    Submarines have salt water toilets.

Let’s just say…hypothetically of course…..that a cacher goes for a deep water crossing and forgets to remove his cell phone from his pocket.

If said water was salt water, hypothetically, then it will be a good idea to completely disassemble electronic device and rinse components with fresh water as soon as hypothetically possible.

Hypothetically, salt water is very corrosive and will hypothetically damage said electronic device.

In a hypothetical situation as addressed above, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you DO NOT attempt to turn on a device to “see if it still works”. Immediately remove the battery and let it dry out for a few days.. That cannot be emphasized enough.

I’m not saying I’ve ever dropped my cell phone in the toilet or anything, I’m just saying. Hypothetically, of course.
