I wish I had a multi fuel vehicle today. I could actually pay $.10 more for E85 than I can for regular unleaded.

Anyone here run E85 in their car? comparing E85 and regular fuel mileage on many different models on http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ it looks like it would actually cost you more to go the same distance.

I decided to see what info I could find about this cult, and stumbled onto this webpage.

    http://www.shawano-wisconsin.com/index.html

After reading a few things, it looks like the website is written by the cult itself.

Only the “Routeable” Maps have Unlock Codes

There are ways around this though……

If you need any assistance, send me a message.

Blue charts also has the unlock procedure, as do some of the topo mapsets for other country’s.

I also found a program that unlocks all installed mapsets on your PC, then you can install on as many devices as your want just like the unlocked map products.
I am in no way promoting software piracy, but if one knows where to look there are options available.

I have heard if you buy the maps on the pre-programed data cards that they don’t have any unlocks, though I’ve never tested this myself. The only disadvantage is you can’t use the maps on your PC, but if you upgrade your gps or need o send it in for repairs you don’t have to deal with the whole unlocking scheme.

Garmin changed their unlock policy which used to suck and made it even worse. before you were able to unlock two units per software purchase, now you only get one unlock. The only plus I see is they lowered the price of the software by around $20.

I sent in a unit for repair and forgot to ask to a new unlock for the new unit. I then had to spend another 30minutes on the phone to get an unlock code for the replacement unit.

you might be better off buying the newer software anyway, depending on when you originally purchased the software you have you might not have the newest version.
I was using City Navigator NT 2008, and switched to city navigator 2009NT and was pleasantly surprised at all the new water data the maps have(lakes, rivers, streams). I used to switch between topo and street maps to have decent maps for hiking, but having more water info I find i am doing this much less.

    DB,
Delorme has some of the best mapping software available.

This is why my next GPS is going to be the PN-40. The Topo 7.0 software is usually $99, but delorme incudes these with the PN-20 and the new PN-40 so you are really getting a great deal when buying a Delorme.
I’ve heard you can add your own trails to the maps with the delorme which is pretty awesome. I read a few Forum post about getting the Xmap software from delorme and you can then Import scanned images of trail maps, or even screen captures maps and trace them to add trails to your delorme maps.

I really like it when there are other cheaper options to display cache info other than having to buy a Palm, pocket PC or a new expensive GPS.

I have used my Sony PSP to display caches, since it has a built in web browser I just did a simple HTML export from GSAK and copy the files to the Memory stick.

In this situation, I would buy 30 Etrex H units from walmart.com at $90 with free shipping (you do have to pay the sales tax unless you can claim an exemption), plus one or two data cables off of Ebay for around $7. If I was buying only ONE GPS, I think I agree with the Etrex Venture at $130, but for a class of kids, you need don’t need the fancy electronic compass, etc.

Just to corect you, the venture HC doesn’t have an electronic compass. The only fancy part of that GPS is it can have 24mb of loaded maps, base map of the whole world, and has a color screen. it can’t even do auto-routing maps, just topo maps/home made maps. Because it has an actual USB connection this would be the cheapest gps I would ever consider.
It also has a click-stick(directional pad enter button combo) for navigating the units menus, making it SO MUCH easier to use than the standard etrexH.

If I was going to buy the Etrex H models, I would buy them off newegg.com because you wouldn’t have to pay any tax, just shipping. The issue I see with the Etrex H, allot of people who uses serial to USB adapters or serial cables at all have issues with them. unless you have a need for a gps with a serial connection, I would never buy one that didn’t have an actual USB connection.

Really it boils down to is it worth $300-400 more for all the units to get a more user friendly interface(click-stick) and a real USB connection, and units that actually comes with the standard usb cables?

    Hello!
Now that we’re looking to purchase ten units, I’m asking for some advice. What are the cheapest, USB programming-enabled, accurate, and intuitive units on the market? If you could buy ten units (and spend roughly $1,000+) for a high school geography class, what make/model would you buy?
    GBPaddlers

The best buy for a USB enabled, accurate unit is the Etrex Venture HC, you can buy one from newegg.com for $130. besides the USB connection It has the newer high sensitivity chipset, color screen and you can even load 24mb of maps to the unit.
The etrexH(the new high sensitivity chipset yellow) is $89 dollars on newegg but is a Serial connection and doesn’t come with the cable. So besides having to buy the serial cable, you would also need to also buy a serial to USB cable too, so there is almost as much cost with the cheaper model.

We use Etrex Legends and they can easily be purchased over the Internet for less than $100 each. The only drawback that we have found with these units is loosing a signal when under heavy cover.

The legend at less than $100 does seem like a good deal, but since it’s really an old unit(came out around 2001) money would better be spend on a unit with the newer chipset(better signal in the woods). not to mention it only has 8mb of storage for maps, serial connection, and worse battery life.

I was Touring with Astro D, k0rpl and Benny7210 this past Saturday, when we ran into a newbie.

Well, she has over 200 finds, but still relatively new.

And she did not know about the WGA.

Since allot of WGA members have the logo/link on their cache page, I would think after having 200 finds you would have noticed this by now, guess that proves most people don’t actually read the whole cache page. 😉

Maybe there is hope for my 2005 WI geocoin, though mine the whole cache went missing so its probably gone for good. It’s always nice to hear they do come back sometimes!

I had a travel bug go missing about two years ago and had pretty much forgotten about it. The other day i got an email that someone had found a pile of travel bug tags(just the tags) near a cache and mine was one of them.
The guy snail mailed it back to me so I could fix it up and get it going again. I am still surprised that this TB showed up again, but it got me wondering, has anyone else had their missing TB show up after so long?

I picked up this cute travel bug last weekend. Just now putting two and two together!

Will find it a happy home soon!

Glad you got to see the story behind it and thank you for helping it on its travels!

Its not quite been a month since I started this topic and this TB now has 31015.7miles on it, and it’s now back in Iraq again.

in reply to: Missing Travel Bugs #1895354

Well it looks like another one of our Travel bugs that was missing is going again!

Technically it wasn’t entirely missing, but 5 months ago the tag and item got separated and there was no easy way to get them back together.

The Nice cacher who grabbed the tag attached a new similar item and set it back on its journey. Not only that, He also posted a great photo of the TB riding the dash of an airplane!

unlisted BM can be logged as waymarks. But I don’t know how that works.

I’ve listed a few on waymarking.com, it’s not all that difficult. It’s even easier if you are just logging a find that someone else has listed though. 😉

The requirements for listing a Benchmark are listed on this link below. Basically you just fill out a few questions, post coordinates, and upload some photos. If you decide to list a benchmark on waymarking.com just look at a few of the other bechmarks that are posted to get an idea of what information you need to include.
