They must have put out a ton of benchmarks in 1934, as I found a couple last week near me and noticed allot of them around here where monumented then.
one I found last week was monumented in 1918, and a few miles to the west I found one a few years back that was monumented at the same time.

I’m going to keep looking, I really want to find some really old ones.

Side note: I just found out about this website and it works great for finding bechmarks, even those not listed on the geocaching.com page that you stumble across. http://benchmarks.scaredycatfilms.com/index.html

posting this using Chrome.. definitely a fast browser, at least on my POC desktop computer….

Kinda flakey while filling in this post box… we’ll see how it favors in comparisons at work as well.

I agree with the flaky part posting on this forum. I found that if I tried to delete text in previous sentence, add a space, or capitalize something it looked as though I was typing over some of the text I had entered in the next sentence. basically I just make my edits and click after my posted text and everything will display properly.
This strange typing behavior only seems to effect this website though, as I have posted on a few other forums without issue.

I heard about this. Does anyone know if there are any benefits from it?

Also, does anyone know if google will continue to support Firefox (which is my primary browser) and whether the upcoming Internet Explorer 8 will immediately antiquate chrome?

I tried it and someone like it, it takes some getting used to. I like this new chrome browser better than safari and opera, but don’t think it will replace Firefox as my default.
as for IE8 I don’t think you have anything to worry about when it comes to that browser being better than chrome. I have been using the betas of IE8 and it never seems to get any better than IE7(which sucks too in my opinion).
I wanted to see how much ram this browser was using in my task manager and noticed multiple instances of it running. after reading a bit on the Wiki page I see this must be be because each tab you have open acts as a seperate deal called sandboxing. You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Chrome

I was thinking the same thing when I started this topic but decided if it went lost it was probably meant to anyway

The only one of mine that is a green smiley face I have in my inventory. The grey smiley face is in someone possession as far as I can tell.
all my other TB and coins are marked missing and they are grey boxes with question marks.

In short I don’t have a clue what those colors mean, but I would like to know, LOL.

man It would be nice if my Wisconsin geocoin would show up again somewhere….

on that same note I gave my brother the other Wisconsin geocoin I bought as a gift and placed it in a cache, the very first person who grabbed it lost it!

in reply to: Most Mileage on a Travel Bug #1895382

thanks for the reply, glad to see other peoples bugs getting some mileage too!

I also have a geocoin that has also been going for as long as that travel bug and has almost 16,000 miles on it now. http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=157066

    Go with a 60csx. I haven’t heard a bad thing about it.

I agree, I own a 60cx(no electronic compass or barometric altimeter) and love it. Before I bought this in spring of 2006 I owned dozens of different gps models, Magellan, Lowrance, and garmins. This is by far my favorite.

I had the electronic compass in my VistaCx and did like it, but decided it wasn’t necessary when I purchased the 60 series. I was glad to save the extra $40 toward some maps.

I do like the size on the etrex line better for hiking, but HATE the rubber around the unit that always seems to come loose after about 6months of ownership(at least on all the color etrex models I have had).

Another thing you could do is you can pick up an etrex H(the new yellow) for $99 that has a newer high sensitivity chipset. It uses a old serial connection to the PC and doesn’t come with the cable so I wouldn’t even consider it because you would spend more just to get it hooked to the PC.

You can also get the VistaHCX at walmart.com has for around $220 all the time(different price in store). it has the same high sensitivity chipset, microSD card slot for maps, color screen, better battery life, compass & altimeter, and a USB connection to the PC. If you order that vistaHCX online you can have it delivered to a local store so you don’t even pay shipping.

Granted if you bought the Vistahcx you would also need to purchase a micorSD card & topo or city navigator maps, but you could just use the free maps found here too(no autorouting): http://www.ibycus.com/ibycususa/

If someone you trust does your cache and gives you new cords you can always update your listing.

This is exactly what I was going to say… if you know someone has given good coordinates in the past why not update your page with their numbers or at least average your coordinates and theirs together.

Lo and behold I found that I was in a different position format. The only thing I could think of was that while doing a previous cache, some buttons got pressed while it was in my pocket. I haven’t had a problem since.

Ya I already thought of that both of us are set to WGS 84. I just started checking the numbers when I upload and haven’t noticed this issue for months, but my friend had this happen just a few days ago. he is using a VistaHCX and has the newest unit software and newest communicator plugin installed so I’m not sure what could cause the issue.

in reply to: down load to gps #1895200

The download to gps button on the geocaching website does only work with garmins, but you can download the GPX(premium member) or LOC file and use the geocaching manager software that come with the explorist 500 or use gsak or many other programs to load waypoints.

not to steal your thread but when I seen your post and was hoping it was about an issue I have had a few times with that download to gps button.

every now and then the coords you get are off from what is posted on the cache page. a friend of mine has also had this issue, the coords he loaded with that button were over a half mile off luckily he had the cache info with him and noticed the mistake. anyone else have this happen?

in reply to: shameless plug for nohands gps holder #1895032

Just like my old Magellan Meridian gold and sportrak all etrex models and 60 series gps don’t have the battery contacts soldered to the units main board. I’m sure there are other models this way too.

you can just open the unit up(if out of warranty of course) and solder a small piece of wire to each battery contact so they no longer loose connection with the main board.
the other issue is the battery contacts in the battery compartment get stretched and also loose contact. I’ve seen many forum post where people put a bit of foam behind these contacts to somewhat fix this issue.
I’ve also seen forum post stating that the circuit lacks a capacitor or other means of storing milliseconds worth of power which completely fixes the issue. I looked but couldn’t find any of these post, they had pictures and steps for adding a capacitor inside the 60 series.

Why would you want to add the extra weight to your hiking stick?

Your the manufacturer of this mount so of course you would find issue with someone posting other options. A Garmin etrex or 60 series weight less than one pound so if weight was a concern my question to you would be, Why would I want my gps attached a foot off my chest or waist adding all that extra weight? If I fell my gps would get damaged and I would possibly get hurt from the mount itself.

I’d be concerned about the damage that may be done to your GPSr from all the jarring and pounding on the ground. I know the bottom of a wooden hiking staff gets beaten up pretty fast, I’d worry about those shock waves terminating on the GPSr.

Not to mention that in my personal experience, a hiking stick falls to the ground (or rocks, or concrete) when propped against a tree on a regular basis. How many of those falls can a GPSr survive?

I’ve had my etrex legendC and VistaCx mounted to my mountain bike and they get pounded all day long without issues. The bike mount only uses a small piece of rubber to absorb shock. I’m sure if I mounted a gps to a hiking stick I would do something similar.

however I would be slightly concerned about the hiking stick falling when propped against a tree, but I think I would just be allot more careful so that wouldn’t happen. I use a collapsible monopole camera tripod as a hiking stick(around $10). The bottom is a round rubber foot, or it can be screwed in to exposed a metal spike. The top has a nice mount for my camera(or gps if I made a mount) and a nice foam grip. I’ve never had any issues with durability even after hundreds of hiked miles, so I would think your wooden hiking stick would be pretty durable too.

you may not have seen them before, but they do make hiking sticks with gps mounts, or you can fab up your own. I couldn’t find any doing a quick search but I think I seen them on ebay in the past.

here’s a link to a forum post talking about making your own with a ram mount.

I really like the idea of hands free, but for me I think I would prefer one mounted to my hiking stick.
