If all you need to do is see the caches on a map, you can do this with just GSAK 7 and a few different internet based maping sites.

In GSAK click on the waypoint you want to see on the map so its highlighted, now right click it with your mouse and select Custom URL option in the drop down box(third from top). you can now choose to see your cache waypoint on google maps, topozone, or many more.

in reply to: Images on my cache page??? #1894814

I decided to just post the Images and long history of Reuben as a Note on my cache page. I also started to add a shortened version of the History on the caches main page.

So anyone who has done this cache and would like to know more of the history or anyone who hasn’t done it yet, it’s all up now. (I am going to try and get a photo of his headstone yet to add to the history).

I hope others find this interesting like I did.

    or my very long Note:

EDIT: I figured it out, for some reason the little image icon wasn’t showing on the main Rubens Cave page right way.

I have been looking into getting a bit more history of who Ruben was and I’m eventually going to be adding this information to the cache page. I do have a picture of Ruben and want to add this to the main page, I’m assuming as HTML. anyone have any pointers/websites that would help me out in setting up my cache page?

in reply to: Wrong Type of Travel Bug? #1894807

I would say its not a big deal and move the travel bug on to the next cache. That rule is more guideline so every cache doesn’t end up a weapons dump.

I’ve found a few caches deep in the woods that always seems to get Swiss Army Knives as some of the swag, I figure they are remote locations and it could come in handy in an emergency.

My cache Rubens Cave(GCNVC1) always ends up with knives and beer in the cache, I remove it and they always end up back in a few months. some of this “off limits” swag probably isn’t being left by cachers but people who also visit this location via canoe and stumble onto the cache and don’t know any better.

in reply to: General and Specific Radio Questions #1894547

I’ve used many different radios, and have had the best luck with the Motorola radios. currently I am using Motorola EM1000R model and get better range than any other radio I have used. They claim 20mile range, but looking on the back of the package that says mountain to valley so thats not really real world conditions.
With my girlfriend sitting in our house, I can walk about a mile before we loose contact. that’s through all the buildings in town and a 100+ foot hill. we have also used them at over two miles in the woods, though one of us was on a large hill.

some of the features I like on these radios:
    USB charging or charging cradle
    AA batteries or battery packs
    small(crappy) LED flashlight
    Weather Alerts
31hr talk time on Alkaline batteries

in reply to: New Delorme PN-40 #1894560

From what I’ve read online about the PN-20 the only way to load waypoints to these units so far is using Delorme topo 6 or 7. I’m sure this unit is in the exact same boat. You can export a file from GSAK for Delorme topo, but you would still need Delorme Topo installed for it to work. maybe when more people have these delorme units GSAK or EasyGPS will support these units better.

Delorme does support geocacaching waypoints on these units with an 800 character text limit per waypoint. here is a nice walk through of getting your caches onto this unit.

in reply to: Help, or not. I’m not sure I care. #1894355

I’ve done only a couple caches over the last year which started out because my car broke down(over 240,000 mile on it). I did finally fix the car and managed to get something with less than 60,000 miles on it but still haven’t really wanted to search for anything.

I have still been using geocaching.com, but in a new way. When I am going to travel anywhere I always look for some really cool location to get out and stretch my legs and explore a bit(preferably within 10miles of the hwy I am traveling).
One stop I made recently I think there was 6 caches in the park and I never even bothered to upload the coordinates before leaving home. I really don’t feel like I missed anything though, I enjoyed some great views, had a nice picnic, took some photos, and got back on the road without spending an excessive amount of time looking for caches and probably ruining yet another pair of pants along the way.

Do I still like caching? yep, but for me caching was always more about the places that geocaching took me to than trying to find a box hidden in the woods.

in reply to: Garmin 60csx Questions and Help #1889306

if you are using the webupdater this is normal. basically it first checks for unit software, then it asks if you would like to check for additional updates. This update you got was probably for the units chipset which could easily change the overall behavior of the unit.
I’ve read hundreds of forum posts about the chipset software getting messed up and the unit acting screwy. one sure way to tell was if you checked the unit software/chipset in the menu of the unit the chipset would always say version 0.00 instead of what it should.

off the top of my head I believe you check the unit software here: main menu, setup, system and click menu and select software version.

So perhaps with that download and a Puck I’d be set or would I still need to get additional software?

Or. try to interface the iQue 3600?

I’m not sure if that Nroute software will interface with an iQue 3600, but I do use Nroute with my GPS18 & 60cx so it might work. Since that’s what you have used your map unlock for that’s what you would have to use with Nroute. if you bought a GPS18 or similar it would have to come with maps/another map unlock or you would have to purchase another unlock from garmin.

I should point out that when I bought my GPS18 a few years ago it came with city select 7. At that time Garmin was allowing two unlocks for their software, so I was able to also unlock those maps on my LegendC. when I bought my 60cx I needed to either buy another map unlock or newer maps(it’s about the same price).
I just got City Navigator NT 2009 but Garmin now only lets you unlock one device. I can use Nroute with my 60Cx and CNNT2009, but since I didn’t unlock my gps18 puck I can’t use it except with my old city select software.

Basically If I wanted to unlock my maps legally for my gps18 it would be cheaper to just buy another gps18 or similar device with the map software/unlock included.

in reply to: eTrex Summit HC, or something else? #1891108

The only reason I can think of to look at a different model would be if you need more map storage, and if you do the LegendHCX or the VistaHCX both have a microSD card slot and use the same chipset as the summitHC. The only difference is the LegendHCx doesn’t have the electronic compass or barometric altimeter.

EDIT: I notice the Summit HC only lists the battery life at 14hrs, both the vistaHCX and LegendHCX have 25hr claimed battery life. if you get a chance to use the summitHC I would love to know what kind of battery life you do get.

in reply to: eTrex Summit HC, or something else? #1891107

The Summit HC has the newer chipset that’s suppose to work great in the woods. This model is pretty much Identical to the VistaHCX except it doesn’t have a microSD card slot for maps, it only has 24mb of internal map storage. with only 24mb of storage you’ll only be able to load half the state of Wisconsin of topo maps at once.

The Summit HC also can’t do autorouting, but it sounds like you have a better autorouting device anyway(Nuvi350).

I usually just turn off the compass since it needs to be recalibrated every time you change batteries. The normal gps compass will work great as long as you are moving, though there are times the electronic compass is pretty useful.

Once I was in a swampy woods and couldn’t move more than 3ft straight in any direction(hopping bog to bog) so without the electronic compass on my gps was constantly pointing all over the place. another place it worked great was climbing to the top of a large cliff, the waypoint was at the top but since we were moving to slow and couldn’t walk directly toward the mark it was also all over the place.

I most often look at my gps when I am stopped taking a break, when you use a gps without an electronic compass it doesn’t work standing still.

I don’t have experience with either of those models, but have used a USB GPS18 in the past(hockey puck).
Remember Garmins software is locked so you can’t just get one of these an it will work, you need to get the software/unlock again too(they may include this).

You mention already having City navigator which makes think you must already have a autorouting capable handheld unit too. If so you can use your handheld as a sensor and install Nroute(free download) on your laptop and then use your laptop as your navigation with voice prompts.

Most laptops won’t ever need more than 100watts inverter, I like to leave things plugged in & with a huge inverter I could end up with a dead car battery. I just checked the rating of the power brick in my laptops power cord, it says its only 60watts, so my 100watt inverter should be more than enough.

in reply to: Firefox 3 Guinness World Record #1890104

This link shows total downloads and average per minute.

    http://downloadcounter.sj.mozilla.com/

As of right now there are 3.7million total downloads with an average of 11,000 downloads a minute. The U.S. alone has an total of 1.5million with an average of 7500 downloads a minute.

The 24hour period for setting the record I believe ends at 10am today. I wonder what the totals will be then.

Well today’s the day, Firefox 3 is out now. The website was down for a few hours(when the whole world showed up at the same time) but it’s up again now. Looks like over 2million downloads so far!
