I believe the June 17th release date is also the date they are going to try for the record.

I was just reading online about the DNR closing a few parks and trails, thought I would share the article for anyone planning on going out this weekend.

Also the WI DOT has made a google map of road closures that can be found here:

As far as I understand it the Yellow etrex won’t work with the send to GPS button on the cache page. It has to be a USB garmin GPS, you can’t use a USB to serial adapter(the etrex yellow only has a serial connection).

First thing I Would say to try is in GSAK click on the GPS drop down menu, and select send waypoints. in the box that pops up there is a GPSr setup button on the bottom. In here you set it for garmin, and since you are using a serial GPS and probably a USB to serial adapter uncheck the USB box if checked.

Which etrex are you using? Since you mention USB I would assume its not an older model, yellow, or Yellow H.

I use GSAK but you could just as easily use Mapsource or easygps for free.

Another option that’s much easier than entering coordinates by hand is using the Send to GPS button located on every cache page. It only works with garmin units that have a USB connection, the only thing you need is to install the communicator plugin found here:

I originally bought a Garmin windshield mount for my etrex, but found it vibrated going down the road and the only way to eliminate this was to let the bottom of the mount/unit rest on the dash.

after I got my 60Cx I noticed that the Garmin 60 series mount wasn’t much better so I looked elsewhere, and found the RAM brand mounts. They are more stable and only slightly more expensive, and they make a few different types to choose from.

This one is very similar to the one I use for my 60Cx, but is for the Garmin Colorado:

tyedyeskyguy – Didn’t you just have to rest your unit because you were having some issues with it? maybe you don’t the the comport settings matching in your PC and on the unit anymore.

I’ve never used one of these serial to USB adapters so maybe this makes things a bit different, if so disregard.

Afetr a very short call (10 min or less) to Magellan Customer service, they have my meridian working good as new!

Way to go Magellan, it’s about time!!!

I’m surprised Magellan didn’t offer you the even trade for the craptastic Triton 400-500, maybe they only offer that to explorist owners with issues or owners who mention not receiving WAAS as advertised.

Magellan may have got the unit working but not quite like new, it won’t get WAAS like when new because Magellan never updated the firmware after the satellites changed a few years back. The only Magellan GPS that will get WAAS is one that hasn’t been reset and was used at the time of the satellite change.

There was things I really liked about all my Magellan gps(I owned 5 I think), though a couple of them started only being accurate 80% of the time. The other 20% it would have you 50-200ft in the wrong place, and only a power off/on would correct the issue. you also had no way to tell when it was being off and when it was correct, which is when I bought my first Garmin & Lowrance units & never looked back.

good luck, and I hope your Magellan GPS last longer than all of mine.

I wonder if the container was frozen into place during the winter and someone tried to pry or punch it out of the ice.

That’s exactly what I thought when I heard it was damaged, and since the hide is at ground level it’s probably what happened.

Thanks again Jeremy for helping my out, I’m sure someday I can return the favor. Also thanks for posting a shot of the broken container I was definitely surprised at the size of the hole in it, I thought lock n lock containers were pretty durable before I saw that.

in reply to: Macintosh Garmin users using City Navigator? #1889594

I would assume it is exactly the same as the PC version, except it works on Mac. I don’t see how this would ever be a waste of money, having auto-routing maps on your gps makes caching in unfamiliar areas that much better.

After looking at garmins website, it looks like on the mac you use garmins Mapinstall to load maps to your gps, as of now there is no Mapsource like on the PC. what this means you won’t be able to create/backup routes, tracks, waypoints like you can on the PC.

Thanks for offering to help! it such a cool location it would be awesome to keep it going.
I plan on buying a new car before fall, but while it’s nice out this summer I want to stick to just using my bicycle. I hadn’t thought about my cache maintenance when deciding to bike all summer, so its great to not have to archive my cache.

I guess I could have tried to bike ride to do the maintenance, but it’s around 20miles one way though most of Green County’s hills. I don’t know about any of you but that’s beyond my range of travel on bike. 😉

in reply to: Thoughts on Garmin 60Csx Vs. Colorado 400t #1889536

I have owned a few meridian golds, one of which would randomly shut off. After taking it apart I noticed the battery springs were bent and loosing contact with the main board inside.
I was able to bend the springs back to fix mine, but a more permanent fix would be to solder these contacts with a short piece of wire.

I have city navigator NT 2009, you can fit the whole US on a 1gb card if you leave out canada, if you include every map segment its a bit over 1gb.

Does anyone do video editing and could recommend a cheap (read Free) video editing program? For all I know my Windows Vista might have a program for this but I’m not sure where to look or whether it would do the job.

I’ve never used it but Windows Vista has windows movie maker software pre-installed. If you use the search box in vistas start menu and search “movie maker” it should be the first in the list under programs.

If you buy Garmin maps on a pre-loaded card they can only be used in the GPS, there is no way to use these maps in mapsource on the PC.

also just to clarify when you update Mapsource on your PC it just updates the software, you need to purchase Map updates from garmin yearly or buy a newer version of maps every few years.

MicroSD and transflash are the same type of card and will both work in your garmin, but miniSD is not the same thing at all.

If you buy a microSD card online they are way cheaper than at the store. As of today both sizes listed below are less than $10. With a 2gb card you can fit the whole US of street maps and still have a bit of room left for some topo maps too. I can’t remember the last time I had to load maps to my 60cx, I can travel anywhere in a moments notice and never be missing anything.
