I signed up to get a bronze pin 6months ago, and nothing ever showed up.

I’m probably not going to resubmit, why give out my personal information again to some random website for something with no actual value? for me earth caching is more about the cool places it has taken me, not about getting a pin. ok maybe I’m just disgruntled because I never got one! LOL

I checked under tools and I don’t show a go to flight simulator.

I don’t think you can find it in tools. Ctrl+Alt+A worked for me.

Strange, I swear every PC I have tried this on has it listed under the tools menu. See my included screen shot.

Well it will not work for me. I just downloaded the most recent version. I can’t locate it under tools or even using the magic key combos. 🙁

Not sure why it’s not working for you, I would check what version it says your running. If you are running the latest, maybe fully uninstalling the software and then installing it again will fix the flight sim not showing up issue.

To check your version: In google earth goto Help, about google earth.

    My version is:

    Google Earth
    4.2.0198.2451 (beta)
    Build Date
    Sep 12 2007

We have not had that problem. But if anyone would like they could leave beer in our fridge. 😀

lol the fridge wouldn’t be bad but since its starting to get cold I am afraid it will freeze an leak all over. Also I have to drive 30miles and hike 3miles just to remove something that should be there in the first place.
Seems like allot of work for what has always been a single miller lite 12oz can. I never drink it and usually just pour it out, who likes warm beer anyway? I guess the cave does keep it slightly cold.

I probably won’t get out till next Friday to remove the beer, so if anyone is up for a beer/cache run your more than welcome to the find. 😉

in reply to: Cache Rescue #1880140

I come to wi-geocaching and read the forums almost daily, and never even notice the cache rescue link before(two above the forums, I must be blind).

Anyway I was glad to see River cache (GC611) listed on the rescue list until I realized this wasn’t really a rescue list. This is a list of cache sites that require cleanup of possible old geo-trash and broken containers.

River cache being such a cool location and one of the oldest caches in the state it was somewhat sad to see it go. It was one of the many geocaches near baraboo that has went missing this year.

And have you seen the new (and free) flight simulator that comes with the new version of Google Earth? It’s pretty cool.

I really think the flight simulator is pretty neat, but find it funny every website article is claiming its a hidden feature(easter egg) requiring a special keyboard combo to use.
To open google earth flight simulator is easy, open google earth and goto the tools menu, and select enter flight simulator.

in reply to: GSAK macro #1879935

I have been using a gsak macro to create files to upload with garmins custom POI loader. The macro I am using is called garminPOI(prosperoDK).txt

The first time I used it I was doing everything right and couldn’t ever get the custom POIs to show up. Come to find out there was a bug in the GPS firmware(the unit software) that when you were using custom display color settings on your GPSr, with some color settings the POIs wouldn’t showing up.
This effected all garmins color handhelds. I can say for sure if you have the latest software updates installed on your garmin legendCX, vistaCX, 60csx, 60cx, 76csx, & 76cx, they have now fixed this issue.

I’m not sure if this is what is happening with you but figured I would share the info.

in reply to: This is why you need a GPS #1879791

I had a bike mount for my old meridian gold(though the mount was huge) and I used my gps on almost every ride. I have a 60cx but really didn’t want another huge mount like the meridians.
Instead I got a mount for our vistaCX, it works great on the bike and the mount is probably one of the smallest you can get. I’ve got my autorouting and even my topo 2008 maps loaded, so I can really plan out a nice route when riding.

I see garmin has a couple new cycle GPS, the edge 605 and the edge 705. These may have a few more features making them more like a cycle computer, but the price difference I think I would rather buy a color etrex and a bike mount.

you might be able to find some cheap dead or working yellow 60 series models. The case looks exactly the same as all the other 60 models, and the yellow 60 is only $150 new.

in reply to: External Hard Drive #1879419

I am very surprised at all the recommendations for western digital hard drives. I fix computers for living and out of all the dead or error riddled hard drives I have replaced, over half were western digital brand.
I also listen to the security now podcast, episode 81 was on hard drive reliability and Steve Gibson echoed my results when he said he finds more western digital drives have issues. listen here

Heres my story of why I will buy seagate for life, besides the much longer warranty…. I had a 120gb seagate in my personal computer that started to have a few errors after 3years, I sent it in and within a week got my replacement. when I opened the box to my surprise they replaced my 120gb drive with a 250gb one. if I had bought any other brand I wouldn’t have even had a warranty after three years, so I would have had to buy another hard drive at full price.

All hard drives will eventually fail, so the warranty is everything.

in reply to: External Hard Drive #1879414

First off I would recommend buying online because it will be much cheaper. I usually buy all my computer parts from newegg.com.
I would first install a USB 2.0 PCI card in your computer, USB 1.0 is way to slow for large files. I have used a few of these in peoples computers, and have never had an issue.

As for an external hard drive, you can buy a pre-made one or buy your own enclosure and hard disk. The main advantage of building your own is getting more than a year warranty and maybe saving a few dollars. Either way you go I usually buy seagate hard drives, they are the only manufacture with a 5 year warranty on hard drives.

From the map screen, press Menu, then Setup Map, and scroll over to Map Setup – Information. You’ll see your list of loaded maps with a check mark next to each one. But rather than de-selecting them one by one, press Menu again and you’ll see two choices – Hide City Select (or Navigator) and Hide US Topo, as shown in the image.

This is Exactly what I was trying to say in my post, guess I must not have worded it right. I still think garmin could make switching maps much easier, like why not have a show/hide mapset menu option when pressing menu from the map screen? seems this would be much easier for everyone.

I see no reason garmin still has the show/hide the individual map segments menu, I can see when the units only had 25-60mb of storage this being fine, but with the current 1-2gb cards it would take forever to hide each little segment. Maybe someday with a firmware update they will make switching maps easier, but that will probably never happen.

in reply to: Toggle to the topo maps? #1878619

From the map screen, hit menu, & select setup map. Now highlight Map setup-Information (it’s the i-Icon,the 5th from left). you can show and hide individual segments here but if you press menu again with the i-icon highlighted you can show/hide entire mapsets.

It kinda sucks garmin doesn’t have an easier way to switch between maps, you have to press way to many buttons. 😉
