Yes there is a yellow 60 series and it isn’t much more money than the yellow etrex…. but does give you more options for hooking it to the PC(USB).

i am dabbling with using the linux ubuntu system on my computer. but i am way over my head. does anyone use this system that can give me some pointers?

I have used it(my laptop is duel boot windows XP and ubuntu 7.04), but am definitely not an expert. I will say it is one of the more user friendly versions of linux out there.
I assume you are using it off a live CD? or do you have it installed on the computer? also what version of the cd are you using? the current version is 6.10 but I find the 7.04beta is much better(7.04 final should be out sometime in april).

ubuntu forums are great, you can search and find out anything you need to know. I’m not sure where to start with pointing any thing out to you, but if you have any questions I have no problem trying to help.

in reply to: Brown County Shoots Self In Geocaching Foot #1872350

I always thought the fact Dane county charged fee’s for cache placement in county parks was ridiculous, now another county is going to do the same thing. I do believe dane Co. is charging $10 per year, so at least brown co. is only half price. 😆
I guess the land management has forgot that every person that comes to there park already has to get Dog,bike, boat, horse, &(did i forget any) permits to use the land already. more visitors(cachers) are already making them more money.

welcome to winslow, a friendly community.

    Yeah, I noticed that too.

LOL I also noticed that, though I figured I couldn’t hold anything against them because the cache owner lives a state away in Indiana so isn’t from the area. I’m sure winslow has some nice people living there.
I kinda feel like a jerk for starting this thread, but If I wouldn’t have vented a bit I may have been a bit rude to the cache owner in my return emails.

in reply to: POI’s What do you load? #1872279

I should also say that all those custom Icons and gpx files end up being a 89kb poi.gpi file on the card, I think thats like 750 custom waypoints that take up less than 1mb of card space.
also you can search the custom POI’s in your gps by group name, you don’t need to search through all of them.

in reply to: POI’s What do you load? #1872278

There is gsak macro’s for exporting a gpx file for custom POI’s, but I just use the standard File, export, GPX/Loc.

I change the waypoint name to output to: %name-%code
with a max characters of 44

I also set the cache description output to: %con1-%hint=88 (%Dif/%Ter)
    that way I get container + hint & difficulty/terrain

I export a GPX files for each database I have In gsak, then have them all in one folder for upload with garmins POI loader. you also can have custom Icon for each GPX file in there, you just have to use the same name for the custom image as the GPX file(16X16 bitmaps like normal garmin custom icons).

Maybe it is because you are wearing a Michigan sweatshirt. 😆

I would delete any log made by someone in a Michigan sweatshirt as well. The nerve of some people. 😉

Thanks for the laughs! My girlfriend can’t help it she is from michigan….

yes the cache owner finally let me just log the cache as I had, though it took some work on my part. maybe it was me mentioning the 60mile round trip to the cache just for a new photo.

Done deal, I’m just gonna let him delete my log, I’m sick of all the threats and nasty emails.

I just feel the cache owner is being kinda anal about it, and quite frankly this really turns me off to caching in general(right now anyway). I drove 30+ miles out of my way to do this cache, took my photos near cache as I always have(I never post FACE pictures online).

There really isn’t anything I can do to make this right with him short of driving back there and taking another photo, which is ridiculous.

yes thats exactly what the issue is, I don’t have a whole face in the picture, but as i said before isn’t the photo really just to prove your visit so you didn’t somehow get the info off the internet?

    1. I answered all the questions
    2. I uploaded photos

I have asked what I can do to make this right, all I ever get is rude responses.

I’m about ready to get in my car go buy a ski mask and drive to nowhere Illinois to get a new photo just to put this behind me.

Well for some reason the cache owner is still having issues with my log…. I guess I should have centered my picture. Now he says my log is going to be deleted again unless I can come up with some good explanation of my actions….

    GC116Y0

This is really frustrating to me, I really don’t see any problem with my log & don’t want to loose the find…. anyone have an earth cache I can log so I don’t loose my smiley? 😕

I got the rudest email back from the owner claiming he deleted my log because my photo wasn’t good enough, and that I had cropped my photo so I wasn’t in picture per the cache logging rules…..

I guess I always had the understanding that the photo was just proof you where there, and hello isn’t this just a game?

    Thanks for letting me vent

I thought that there was this post in the GC forums about the two side by side. I found it http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=139022&hl=comparison.

I also saw this comparison before and it was really nice to see them side by side. The only real advantage of the 76csx is it floats, but if you use energizer E2 lithiums, the 60csx floats too(I tested it).
only problem with using the lithium battery’s is they hold more charge than normal AA’s, so you have to initially run them down a bit to use them in your garmin gps, if you don’t your gps may work for a few minutes before to screen fades out(unit shuts down). garmin knows about this issue and actually tells you to run the batteries down before use.

The funny part is the old 60cs,60c,76c,76cs work great with lithiums, it’s just the new X models that can’t handle the initial voltage. I use lithiums in the winter in my legendC, I get almost 50hrs of battery life.

We found 3 this weekend also – all deer ticks. The deer ticks seem to get active sooner than the wood ticks.

We each found a couple deer ticks crawling on us yesterday, we were only in the woods for less than a 1/2mile hike.

Unfortunately you are correct, I had to buy the newer Garmin mapping software with the 76csx, So, yes, I too have all three versions of the software too.

I agree that having the most current street maps is nice but you can use older garmin maps with the 60cx. city select, or city navigator both work, though you need to purchase an additional unlock code if you have already used the two you get with the software.
I had already used both my unlocks for cityselect 7 on my legendC and gps18 so I’m currently using my old metroguide 7 maps uploaded with img2gps or metrowizzz to get autorouting on my 60cx. I do plan on buying the next version of city navigator, but am holding out until july(I think thats when they release the new versions every year).
