You didn’t mention what type of gps you are using, I know garmin has released a new USB driver that is more vista compatible.
There are a couple methods mentioned here….
http://www.hiphopmusic.com/best_of_youtube/2006/02/how_to_download_and_save_youtu.htmlSolar flares are known to cause electronics to go buggy, though I’m not sure on the conditions yesterday. Any electronic device is vulnerable to changes in the Electromagnetic field around it. strong EMF be it caused by the sun, cellphone tower, electric lines, and even your gps.
current solar flare activity
http://www.n3kl.org/sun/status.htmlI have not experienced any really strange issues with either of my garmin gpsr(legendC or 60cx), but did encounter speed issues and signal loss with both my magellan meridian gold’s. In fact one of my meridian golds would set off our FRS radios if it was within 8ft and the FRS was on the right channel.
I have seen people online with the garmin GPS V having these issues, so its definitely not just magellans that are effected. The belkin cable is between $30-40, and pretty useless once you have used it once. Myself I would head to my local walmart and pickup a 80gb-160gb external usb hard drive for $90-$120. at least with a external drive it can be used to backup all your important files.
I fix computers and I would say less than 10% of people out there have any sort of backup of there stuff(on cd, dvd, or a hard drive). Over half the time I can recover there data from a dead windows machine, but there are times that hard drives have mechanical failures which makes getting back the data much less likely.
I can’t say it enough…. spend the money and backup all your important files. it’s just to bad most people ignore my advice until after there is a problem.I used my etrex legendC in a light rain for a few hours, a few days later I noticed the rubber was coming loose and the glue had become gummy and was oozing out. I called garmin and they had me send it in, I got a refurbished one back within a week.
This problem is so common hopefully garmin’s next etrex sized model uses a different design.@kbraband wrote:
I just received the same answer in the gc.com forums. Thanks!
main menu…setup…routing… guidance method…. prompted.
Once you have prompted set it’s very easy to switch between follow road/offroad mode. When already navigating to a waypoint, from the map or compass screen hit menu and choose recalculate, then just choose on or off road.
I also bought the version 7 upgrade, for me it’s well worth it. a great example of a small detail that makes a big difference is if you ever enter coordinates manually before you couldn’t cut and paste coords because gsak had the numbers split up into different sections. version 7 changes this and you can paste coords directly in.

My one complaint is how burried switching maps option really is. from the map screen you have to press menu, select setup map, highlight the map setup-information(5th option from the left), press menu again and then show and hide the maps you choose.
I have got used to switching maps but it would be great with a few less button presses. Seems to me they could make it much easier, from the map screen hit menu, and add a swtich maps option right there.
That sounds pretty bad. With Teletype software on my Pocket PC, the map for the entire county gets loaded automatically as soon as I cross the county line.
Although I haven’t tried Garmin mapping software yet, and I’m still using the C series, not Cx, sometimes I wonder if Garmin “gets it” especially when it comes to geocaching.
when I say switching maps, I mean switching between topo and city navigator maps. with both types loaded and both set to show, the city navigator is only shown, you need to hide it to see your loaded topo maps.

can you load both the topo and city nav on to the SD card then switch between the two different maps. ie use city nav to get to a cache area then swith to topo to assist getting to the cache itself.
Yes you can. You can also switch back to the basemap (why? I don’t know either), a Fishing Hot Spots map, or a Bluecharts water map. You switch in the map set up screen. You are still limited by the 2025 total map segments and your memory.

What is the difference between City select and City navigator?
city select is older outdated software, it uses smaller map segements because it was designed for the old 60c/76c & 60cs/76cs models without expandable memory like the new X models. The most current version of city select is V7, where there is a version 8 of city navigator.
Also note there are two versions of city navigator, there is the standard Version 8 and the NT version. The standard version you will need a 2gb microSD card to fit the whole US, where the NT version is compressed differently and can fit the whole US on a 1gb card.
The 2025 map segment limit really only effects garmins topo software(topo uses very small map segments), if your using city navigator or city select you can max out the card. I only have access to city select at the moment, the whole US is 1059map segments & 1,645mb.
If you buy city navigator NT the whole US will fit on a 1gb card.
I see the kingston 1gb card is now out of stock, guess I got lucky when I ordered a second one earlier. newegg is pretty good at getting things back in stock, I’m sure in a few days they will have more.
EDIT: I just checked again and they are now listed as in stock
I should also note this comes with an SD card adapter so this card will not only work with transflash/microSD card devices, but regular SD card devices too.

I believe there is only one cache in the small Maribel Caves Park:
GCGJ1B Maribel: Here Be Monsters
I’ve been meaning to make it to this park and find this cache for over a year (it is just off I-43), but I haven’t done so yet…
Here is a recent news article about the cave (it was discovered in 1984 and started to be excavated in 2003, so this is not really new news):
I have always wanted to do the Maribel cache(because I love caves), maybe this year I’ll make it up that way. Jeremy thank you for posting the link, I had not heard anything about the cave excavation, or it’s size.
“So far about 150 feet of walking space and 100 feet of crawling passage have been dug out and opened to the public.”
After reading that I thought someone who lives near by should post some coordinates to the new cave entrance.

ah, i just found how to change back to the smaller icons. in the preferences, there is a box for txt size and for the images. clicked to small and was back to normal.
Thanks, I didn’t even notice that setting box.

I have an older version of the maps called “MapSource MetroGuide” does anyone know if this will work with the Garmin 60cx ?
yes but out of the box it won’t offer any autorouting like city navigator. I have metroguide V6 and when I load it to my 60cx with the program Img2gps it also loads the autorouting data(mapsource strips ths from metroguide).
I have thought about getting the new metroguide V8 so I would have slightly newer map data, and no unlock codes like city navigator has to deal with.EDIT: I should also say that mapsource metroguide V4 or earlier includes autorouting, even when loading from mapsource.
