I did an analysis of the membership list and divided the membership using the same quarters that the DNR uses to decide whether a property is NE, NW, SE, or SW. The N/S division is roughly just south of Appleton, while the EW division is just east of Madison/Wausau. The numbers are as follows:
NW = 116
NE = 137
SW = 121
SE = 509I think that having regional section of the forums is a great idea, that way topics posted about non-SE Wisconsin caching issues won’t get buried before they are answered.
You also just outlined the problems with cache of the month. Now I know why it seems my vote doesn’t even matter, the majority of the cachers are from SE WI. Someone will now probably say something about caches in all corners of the state have won, well that just goes to show you that SE wisconsin cachers do sometimes get out of that region to go caching.
I live in SW Wisconsin and totally understand where the topic starter is coming from, but when it has been mentioned in the past about modifying COTM into regions no one seemed to like it, so it’s a surprise to me to see most people like the regional forum idea.I’m not trying to change the issue, but point out the problem isn’t just the forums.
I had two meridian golds in the past, one of them suddenly shut down one day and needed to re-initialize…. deleting all my waypoints. I also had an explorist 200 that would randomly do this. I was very near a microwave tower when this happened on the gold, and I was using the projection function, not sure if either of these had something to do with the issue.
Luckily I had a pocket pc with me at the time(also my other meridian gold) so my caching day wasn’t over. I got rid of all my magellan gps receivers not long after that….. I think it was after the day that all my magellans were putting us 200ft+ off on a cache, and took more than 5minutes to update and let us know they were wrong(5minutes to long in mosquito country).
Good luck, but I think it’s something your going to have to live with.
I did a test right after I bought the 2500mAh energizers to see how long the batteries last in my legendC and 60cx. I just turned them on and left them sit until they were dead then added up the time on the trip computer pages.
60cx with full backlighting – 10hrs
legendC with full backlighting – 14hrs60cx without backlight – 20.5hrs
legendC without backlight – 32hrsI use the energizer 2500mAh batteries and LOVE them. I get the same if not a little better battery life in my 60cx & legendC with those compared to regular AA’s. here’s one thing to remember, rechargeables can loose up to 1% of their charge every day they sit so you need to give them a fresh charge the night before you head out.
I also use these in my digital camera and can get 500+ pictures off one set.another thing to look at, what kind of charger are you using? some chargers get the batteries really hot and cook them shortening their life. If your charger has a battery compartment cover remove it so the batteries stay cooler when charging.
here is one of the chargers I have that works great, batteries stay cool the entire time they are charging(comes with 4 batteries).
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4291460I had all the rubber come loose on my legendC after using it in the rain for a few hours awhile back, garmin replaced it no questions asked. I sent it to them postal priority mail and they returned it DHL next day air, it took exactly 7days to have my new gpsr.
one thing I forgot to mention to garmin when I sent it in was that I had city select, so I had to spend another 30min on the phone to get the new unit they sent unlocked for my software(since I had used both my unlock codes already). I have heard if you tell them when your sending it in they will inlcude an unlock coupon when they return you a new unit.check out the picture below of the case we now use the legendC in the rain to to stop any issues. its a lexan floating waterproof/crushproof box, there is a few silica packets in the bottom to get rid of any moisture that does get in when we open the container.
I haven’t had any issues with my 60cx in the rain and hope not to, I wish I could find a similar container that would fit a 60series.

Would it be possible for the “Quick Links” shown at the left side of the page to open a new window instead of just opening the page in the current window (and losing contact with the WGA site)?
I agree, I use tabbed browsing in firefox and like links to open in a new tab. for all those people who hate having more than one window open, I recommend using tabbed browsing, even IE7 has it now(suppose to go public next month).
EDIT: I guess I can continue to use the rightclick/open in new tab as I have been for ages.

No cable, so it’ll cost you extra if you want to download from your computer. Don’t know if it’s compatible with any other garmin cables.
here is the cable you need, I don’t think it’s the same as any of the other garmin cables.

This would appear true everywhere … if you call corporate they indicate the item is selling for $69.99 Now if I could figure out an excuse why a guy that caches as little as I do needs 3 GPSrs.
If I could find the dang things, I would buy one (even though that would be like GPS number #8 or #9… I lost count). 🙂 I love my Foretrex and would like a mate for it, but I went to three Aldi’s in the Milwaukee area and they were all gone. I think people are buying them and then selling them for a profit on eBay…
I found mine in monroe, so a small town may be your best bet at finding one. I now have three gpsr including the new one, so I’m sure my girlfriend is wondering why I need so many. I did give her my legendC after my purchase, maybe that will keep me out of the dog house.
I just looked on tigergps and see the data cable is $10 for the foretrex, so I can add that to the cost at some point.@tyedyeskyguy wrote:
I just got around to reading yestedays paper and discovered an ad from Aldi’s.
They are selling Garmin Foretrex 101’s for $99 for anyone interested. Thats $50 off retail, and $25 off e-Bay price.
I decided today to finally check out the $99 foretrex at aldi’s…. well it was marked $99 but it rang-up $69. the person working their said they just lowered the price. after playing with it for a few hours it seems to be pretty accurate, hold lock very well. definitely worth the money.
I was just reading about this and wanted to say I think these pins are great, to bad I’ve only ever done one earth cache so far. It would be nice if there was a few more earth caches in our state, or some in the states close by. maybe I can shoot for a bronze pin.
On a side note I noticed that there are two new events GCYHTX & GCYHRF in the Madison area That celebrate the first annual international earth cache day during Earth Science Week….. both events are at the same time 1pm on 10/8/06.
I also thought that the slight difference here from magnetic to true north wouldn’t make much difference, but it does when projecting waypoints. Those couple degrees really could put you off depending on the distance your going.
If I have my gps set to magnetic north I get different numbers than if I project with the gps set to true north(both my legendC and 60cx are this way).here is a world map with the magnetic declination scale, as you can see there are lots of places that a compass will be off by quite a bit.
I believe Wisconsin was going to drop the front plate awhile ago like allot of states have. what I heard was there was a dangerous person that they actually caught because of the front plate(they saw the car parked in a parking lot). It may seem silly but there is obviously reasons for having it.
maybe the person who owns it didn’t activate it or the paper slip with activation code/coin number differed slightly from what was actually on the coin so they activated the wrong coin number(it does happen).
I guess I would check the logs on the cache where you picked it up and see who dropped the coin off, maybe they can be of some help.@cheezehead wrote:

You really wonder who thinks up some of these laws. Do they really think it is safer to drive around with the GPS on the seat, looking away from the road to read it? How about holding it in one hand while you drive, especially with a manual transmission (my personal technique)? Of course, the people of Minnesota and California elected these nitwits, so I guess they are getting what they deserve.
I think that’s the law here in WI too! That would include fuzz busters and the such. I know I got a warning for a dealer plate holder that was on my car. There is to be nothing covering up anything on a plate.
That’s NOT the law here, you CAN have your gps or radar detector mounted to the windshield. you are right though, those dealer plate bezel’s are illegal, you can’t have anything that covers up any part of your plate.
