If there is a lot of traffic on the routers between you and that site, or there are a lot of people hitting that site at that time, your speed may not be represented terribly accurately.
Using a speed test located out on the ‘net will give you a real-world speed, but don’t use that information if you wish to complain to your ISP that you aren’t getting the speed you’re paying for.of course your right, I definitely loose speed if I test to a long distance location on a normal speed test….. the funny thing is this speed test is very accurate even at long distance, the only thing that changes is the latency. when I have had issues with my speed charter local Madison speed test shows perfectly normal, but EVERY other speed test, even local ones( a diff Madison speed test) were showing me at dial-up speeds or lower. if you call charter about this they wil blame your pc when obviously if the connection to charter is great but everything else is slow/useless that the problem is on their end.
I would never complain to charter if i had a problem again, I would wait out the issue and if it didn’t resolve itself I would call and tell them I’m switching to a DSL. Last time when my modem died they sent out a tech that the first thing he said was ” I don’t know nothing about PC’s” 3hrs later I end up fixing it myself with three techs standing there watching me & after one of them using my cell phone to call charter for a hour.
Even after that issue I had another when the neighbors tree fell on the cable coming to our house….. scheduled an appointment and after 2 no shows when I stayed home from work the the finally showed up the third time. Same thing happened to my friend who lives 20 miles away, he is now happily using a DSL.
Make sure you get a wifi card or wifi built into your laptop, that way you’ll be able to use any “hotspot” that has free or cheap wifi to get online when your out caching.
madison has a city wifi project going on downtown, at first it was free but now its a pay thing…. but i think they let charter customers use it at no cost, though I could be wrong. I NEVER pay for wifi there is enough out there to find one for free(there are many websites that list free access points).laptop stats/specs all depend on what your going to use it for, if its email, surfing the web and other basic stuff you probably could get by with something cheap.
MS streets and trips will interface with many gpsr, and without the gps “puck” is under $40. it’s probably one of the better deals for getting decent maps. It worked great with my meridian gold, though its a little work with my 60cx & legendC.I saw this speed test on digg.com a few weeks back. I agree it is one of the better New speedtest out there, to bad I’m stuck with a crappy charter 3mb connection to test with. http://www.speedtest.net

I didn’t click any links, but I am kind of careful about going to pages that show up like this in forums.
I usually pop in a live Linux CD when I want to test out unknown websites so I don’t have to worry about the effects it could have on my pc. you can download and burn your own linux cd’s or have them ship you some for free. I currently use ubuntu linux because of the awesome forum I can turn to anytime I need help.
Live cd’s are great because they don’t install anything so when your done using it your windows install is still exactly the way it was. They are also great for getting your files off a non-booting windows hardrive(or bypassing any windows passwords).Sorry for the long rant about linux, maybe I should start my own blog and spam the WGA forums with it.

Most blogs suck, it’s usually someone taking their own spin on someone Else’s content(or just blatant copying of content).
I use digg.com for news, and I HATE it when people link to blog stories instead of the actual webpage the story originated from. hopefully the blog fad will die off, though I doubt it will.
😉This topic comes up all the time on the geocaching.com forums, though I’ve never understood why. I think using my gpsr on a plane would be great BUT I also feel that it could be used for negative things and probably should be a banned item.
To say that gpsr don’t put out any signal is just plain wrong, granted they are only designed to receive signal. ALL electronic devices put out signal/electromagnetic interference of some sort (notice the FCC compliance on the back of all your electronics). my old meridian gold would key up my FRS radio if it was on the right station, though of the two meridian gold’s I had only one would do this.@dls64 wrote:
I saw one person who picked up 6 in one day (plus coins and TBs) and has had them for 3 weeks or more.
I also noticed this, hopefully they will drop some off and let others find them.
We only found one white jeep last year, we dropped it off a few days after we got it, the person who picked it up is still shown as having it, though I’m not sure if they have been caching since.

I personally don’t care to have a “premium membership” for our organization. I don’t think the WGA can offer anything to make it worth the money.
I’d prefer that all members are equal, and those who want to have coins can help organize mintings. We made a nice profit off last year’s coin minting and I would like that to continue. Those who love coins can help support the WGA buy purchasing them. Those who don’t understand coins can support the WGA by dropping a donation in ammo can, or on-line donation system.
I think all our members are already “premium members” 😀
I agree that it’s better to have all members be equal, and I have no problem donating or buying coin to show my support.
I would however support a premium member ship if it includes a driver or gas money for caching, lunch money, and batteries for my gpsr.
I’ve heard rumors of a new cheap model garmin with a sirfIII chip. it was rumored to be out around xmas, though who knows if there is any truth to the rumors.
probably the same place 1/2 the white jeeps ended up, missing in action.
This isn’t the first time I have heard of this happening, I really don’t want to get into this in any more detail because I don’t want any of the flak coming my way. This is the reason that terracaching evolved(even though in my opinion their sponsorship to be a member is the lamest thing ever, I’ve had my sponsor ship revoked more than once for not being active, which in turn revokes the people I have sponsored)
This sucks for your friend, but there’s not much that can be done about it.
I just noticed that there is a wifi hotspot waymarking category. Would be nice to see some local ones listed.
All the DNF were also from the same person so there is the possibility that his receiver was the one with the problem. Guess the only way to tell would be if someone else checks things out.
I’m sure there is a better way than I have used in the past, I just copy the entire C:Program FilesGSAK folder to the new pc, after I have installed gsak on that pc. I get all of my settings and caches the same as on the old pc.
I read this yesterday before there were any posts and had no problems opening this pdf in the adobe reader 7.0, maybe the people having issues are using an older version or different program.
Alittle side note….. the othe day I downloaded the file off here showing the location of wifi hotspots. I believe it was a GPX, I just wanted to view these on a map and see them, when I tried to open that file in mapsource I got errors. I was able to open into gsak and export a new GPX file and open that in mapsource just fine.
just tired again and got same error with that file again, its located here.
