I was not looking for recognition, I did it for the enjoyment of others. I was pleasantly surprised to discover how greatly I enjoyed the hours of scouting for cache locations and I also have enjoyed the times I have gone back to check caches. The idea that someone should be offended that the series has been nominated for COTM really puzzles me. I am willing to bet that the very same votes would be there if the person who nominated the caches had just chosen their favorite one!

I bet your series is a great and well put together one along with all the other series caches that have came up for COTM. It’s funny that all you got out of my post above was that I was offended that your series was nominated.
obviously you must think when I say “what a joke” I was referring to your caches, this is NOT the case.

“what a joke” is regarding how this seems like abuse of the whole idea of having A cache of the month. As the owner of these 50 nominated caches of the month, I must ask would you not say there is a few of these that really stand out as great hides/great locations? Wouldn’t you like to know which caches the people really like in your series? I know I would because not being from your area when I visit I would want to know which caches really are great, not just a generic “there all great”.

The real point of my original post was to get peoples opinions about what they felt about series caches being nominated for COTM. I was in no way trying to single out your caches specifically, I’m sorry you took offense to my post.

Hey… did you notice the new tool on GC.com for finding caches along a route?
Note that you need to be a Premium Member to use this feature.

guess I’m slow, I didn’t notice this new feature until yesterday. very nice!

I usually would agree it helps to actually do some caches before you go out and place one, but here is a great exception. looks like the owner hasn’t done any caches, and only owns this one. This is a challenging location that defiantly gives the WOW factor.

Awhile back(I think when the new site was still in beta) I added a few things to the geocaching software category, the one “USAPhotoMaps” should now be moved to the new mapping category.

    in reply to: Why? #1762587

I’ve been to some really crappy caches/areas that were ammo boxes, and been to some great caches/places that were micros. For me the container size doesn’t matter, as long as the area is worth a visit.

it is nice to have room for travel bugs and other stuff, though sometimes a larger container can’t be hid as well. our cache “spelunking in magnolia” GCQRXZ was a small container till it was muggled. we replaced it with a micro for now so it wouldn’t get noticed so easily, maybe someday we will put another small container there.

… Summarizing, it sounds like Magellan’s standard unit can get about the same reception as the Garmin x units at a lower cost, but they also appear to have some significant quality issues and poor customer service, which is NOT a good combination.

??? I’m confused! Before this post, there was only one person who didn’t appreciate his Magellan. As for customer service…when’s the last time you heard anyone talk about getting their Garmin fixed for free?

The rubber came loose off the sides of my legendC, called garmin was on the phone for 10minutes before I got an RMA number to send it in. I was never asked to prove where I bought it, or when, or ever told I had to pay to get it fixed. they sent me a brand new(in the box) unit and sent it next day air, so I was only without it for 6days.
I beleive Team Deejay was listening to what I said about Magellan quality sucking because I actually compared the magellan to something, not just rave about how good I think magellan is. obviously I must have liked magellan enough to keep buying them, though if I ever bought another magellan I would buy one of there older units because the newer ones seem to have more quality issues. If you get a good magellan don’t ever get rid of it, I made that mistake with one of the meridian golds we had.(it’s pretty sad that only 1 out of 6 didn’t have some issue, and the only one working good was bought off ebay)

heres a list of handheld gps recievers I have owned.

    magellan(previously owned)
    sportrak map x1
meridian gold x2(bought second one off ebay)
    explorist 200 x1
    explorist 210 x1
    explorist 400 x1

    garmin(currently own)
legendC x2(first one replaced by garmin)
    60cx x1

as you can see I have owned way more magellan than garmins. I really do hope others have better luck than I did.

It would be nice if they would at least put a link up for the google maps showing all the nearby caches. It was also nice to be able to zoom/pan map without opening another page.

If you click on the “View GC.com Maps” link to the left, the page you’ll get to has a link to “View Google Maps (beta)”.

ALSO: This is slightly off topic but I have always had one major issue with the mapquest maps & newly listed caches. the maps basically take forever to load on any cache that has just been listed, but usually clears up after a few people find it/a few days. I get this on both my pc’s, on 3mb internet.

When a cache is first listed, the site links to a Tiger Maps image for the page, which sometimes takes forever to load. The page is put into a queue to have a MapQuest map generated, but it make take several hours or more for that to happen. If you edit the cache page, the Tiger map returns and the page is put into the queue again.

thank you for letting me know how to get to the google maps beta, I never use the gc.com maps so I would have never found it.

also thanks for letting me know why the maps seemed so slow when caches are first listed. this was something I always wondered about.

I really could care less about the google maps link that just shows the cache which I’m looking at, if thats all I get I would rather use mapquest.

There has been 10+ topics on gc.com forum about this same thing, the majority of people would like to see a setting that each user could choose the maps they want, hopefully this is possible.

I believe it was because some people (dial-up) the maps wouldn’t display quickly or even at all. from what I read it sounded like most people wanted a really quick site, not fancy maps.

I really liked the new maps too, good thing you still can use them…..

in reply to: help… city select 7 VS city navigator 7/8 #1762440

I tried img2gps with metroguide version6 and it works great on the 60cx, we now have full auto-routing of roads! I only wish I had metorguide version7 so the map data would be the same as cityselct7(it shows slightly more)

since I already own metroguide6, cityselect7, and topo US I wasn’t looking forward to buying any more software, especially since all I would basicly be doing is unlocking autorouting on our new one. now I can just wait awhile to upgrade the software.

    another alternative….

I was reading on gc.com forum this morning and thought I would share one of the posts.

    QUOTE: zapped
“My choice was neither City Select nor City Navigator. I used Metroguide USA v3 for several years, until I purchased MetroGuide North America v7 just recently. You can find v7 for about $80 street if you look around. There were and are no unlock codes and all map segments can be freely downloaded to any/all Garmin GPS units you choose (given they support mapping). The software is not copy-protected nor does it require serial numbers or activation to install on your PC.

The downside is the recent Metroguide versions do not (officially) support routing on the unit, only on the PC. However, all the data is available on the Metroguide DVD but Garmin’s MapSource wrapper-software strips the routing info on the way down to your GPS. The workaround to that is a simple wrapper program “img2gps” . Using that wrapper to download your Metroguide maps allows routing to be performed within your GPS unit.”

in reply to: help… city select 7 VS city navigator 7/8 #1762436

city select is being phased out, it started back when I purchased the gps18 bundle. I couldn’t find city select anymore on most websites & I wanted the smaller map regions of city select for our old legendC. so I bought the gps18 bundle just to get the software.
also I have read that the new version of city navigator will use the same small map segments as city select. I’m not buying city navigator till version 8 comes out, though I know in the past garmin has let people with the previous version upgrade for $50.

I noticed that the pre-programed cards for Europe have NT in there name, so it is “city navigator NT”. reading online this seems to stand for New technology, and what it boils down to is the maps take up half the space for the same size segments. not sure if the dvd with be NT version, but if the pre-programed cards are I don’t see why the dvd wouldn’t also be NT.

guess we will all have to wait and see.

in reply to: help… city select 7 VS city navigator 7/8 #1762432

I had never heard that, in fact have read a few things on GC.com forum about people using city select with the new X models. The only difference that I have heard about is the map segment sizes being larger in city navigator(this is suppose to change back to the smaller size with version8)

I would actually prefer the larger map region sizes, since as of right now there is a limit of 2025 map segments in the unit. use a few topo maps and this fills up fast.

I’m more interested in the actual map data(roads, ect.) and if there is much difference. if i compare metroguide 6 to city select 7, city select 7 the roads are in more correct position, shows roads in parks, & also 3/4 of the POI locations are closer to there actual locations. hopefully with city navigator 8 there is just as noticeable improvements.

I did a cache awhile back that the owner had added a rating system, definatly would be nice to see this on all caches.
I see it was downloaded off keenpeople.com, but you have to have an account to use the site. here is a link to the cache, the rating system is located just above the hint. (GCT9P0) http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=3d656da5-c2af-4601-8a1a-efbb9e3d6a93

in reply to: Question on Magellan GPSs #1741429

even though I had quality issues before with magellan, the great signal lock(works great in your pocket)& file system made me order the explorist 400 wilderness bundle. with the rebates on all the magellans right now the $250 bundle was only going to be $200 after rebate…. a great deal if you ask me, if it would have been a working unit.

I am happy to say I ordered the bundle from tigergps, and they let me return the bundle no questions asked even though I had opened and used the bundled topo software. I ordered a 60cx to replace the 400, hopefully it gets & holds signal as good as a magellan, to bad it was way more money than I wanted to spend.

I hope I wasn’t being to negitive toward magellan with my posts before, I really wasn’t trying to scare you off. If you get a chance try one, you might like it.
