I should also say read on the goecaching.com forum about how poor magellans customer serivce is, and I can say they are as bad as people say(at least now they are)
garmin will even replace heavily damaged/out of warrenty stuff so any extra cost is justified. I even read about a guy who drove over his 60cs and garmin told him to send in all the peices, and they sent him a new one.

EDIT: I’m sure others have had better luck than me, or at least I hope they have. the best magellan we owned was the meridian gold, but having three at the same time it was strange how different each one acted, even with the same firmware.

in reply to: Question on Magellan GPSs #1741422

I’ve owned 5 magellans and two garmins…. I would rather own a rock than another magellan. the most recent magellan I owned was a explorist 400, it had all the problems of the older models and some(I should say that this could have just been this unit)

going to a cache in a deep valley and heavy tree cover the explorist wasn’t putting me anywhere close, standing right on it our legendC was showing 12ft away, the 400 was showing 200ft away. owning older magellans I know about the overshooting problem, but even when I walked to where this unit thought ground zero was the unit never changed.

I checked coord system/datum, and also had newest firmware installed. turned off unit and went to the waypoint again, same problem…. so I checked coords and they were the same on both units. the next cache wasn’t in such a hole and the explorist found it just fine.

I did a comarison in poor signal enviroment marking the same spot with both units, coming back to that spot, the explorist was saying the spot was 80ft away, legendC only a few feet. put coords in from etrex into explorist and it was then able to find the spot. basicly to mark accurate coords I had to take TONS of readings with the explorist.
all the magellans I have used(about 10) have had very buggy firmware so they get strange behaviour… and the newer ones seem even worse.

I will say the only advantage the explorist has is the file system/geocache manager, but if it can’t get me to the right spot that doesnt even matter.
if you want better signal in the woods just buy a newer color garmin. the color etrex models get 100X better reception than the older ones. I just sent back that 400 wilderness bundle for another garmin.

in reply to: wisconsin geocaching association logo #1744709

I have always liked the wisconsin side of the WI geocoin.(not the deer) To me this would be a great logo.
It has “the badger state”, assosiation name, wisconsin shape,lat./long. lines & numbers, and a great compass rose. seems simple and to the point, theres no reason to clutter the logo with ammo boxes or gpsr’s.

    in reply to: 76csx $100 rebate? #1761638

I would contact garmin, I seen on the geocaching.com forum that they honored another persons rebate even though they bought just before it started. also there is a link to the rebate here. http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=132844

you are right, metroguide doesn’t allow auto routing.

If you are talking the grey scale legend it only has 8mb of map storage. this is really not enough for use with city select, plus the legend can’t do autorouting. city select allows two units to be unlocked for use with maps, would you really want to unlock it for a unit that couldn’t even auto route? metroguide on the other hand is just like the topo you have, and is fully unlocked.

also you may not have noticed, but city select is being discontinued in favor of city navigator, I beleive that version 7 is out, but version 8 is due out shortly.

If I were you I would just let the kiddies use topo and buy myself the city navigator verison 8 when it comes out.

if we were free we would also like to do this cache.

I noticed that CommanderUSN had logged this cache “GCHWJB” and a few other nearby caches on April 7 and mentioned being with guys from channel 27. so I would bet that was commanderUSN on the news.

thanks for the quick reply, thats probably it though it seems wierd that I can still get here through a proxy just fine.

in reply to: GPS’r way off of cache #1761456

I remember my old gpsr had pretty buggy software in it, anytime I would see strange behaviour looking for a firmware update or just resetting the unit and reloading the firmware seemed to clear out the bugs.
I see on garmins site there was a firmware update for the 60cs on April 19, 2006 software version 4.10, I would try that and see if things improve.

wow I thought this was only a pocket pc issue. I rememeber a couple times when it mysteriously turned on in my caching bag and ran the batterys dead….. the only thing syncing with pc did was backup my files. all the software & settings I had were gone. after the second time this happened the device started to seemed pretty useless to me, so some ebay member is now the proud new owner of a pocket pc!

maybe someday I’ll get another paperless caching device, or even better would be they just make a GPS that can have full cache logs for each waypoint file.(I can dream can’t I?)

    very cool!

in reply to: Waypoints won’t load to Magellan GPS #1741288

if I remember right you have to have NMEA off to be able to transfer anything to the meridian gold. also when we had our meridian gold’s even though baud rate was matching on software and GPS I found that the higher baud rates wouldn’t go. only the lowest speeds worked for me.
I did later find out about turning up the baud rates on the communication ports in the PC’s device manager…..I beleive that in windows xp the setting is 9600 baud by default.

in reply to: Sharing waypoints & track logs #1761225

I just started to map out all the Iceage trail near belleville,WI. This place is huge and seems that everytime I hike there I find another trail, so i decided that it would be cool to have a mapsource file I could load up anytime I go there.
I also thought that it would be great if there was a website to share tracks with others. I can just imagine going hiking anywhere in the state and being able to go download a mapsource track log of the area showing all the trails. that would be slick!

EDIT: I did find one website that is for sharing waypoints/track logs but it looks like not many people are using it. http://www.gpsdata.org/index.html

in reply to: New and improved testing #1741250

I always read that the legend C and the vista C got better reception than the 60c/60cs. I have always been able to get and hold a lock inside biuldings, even down to 10ft accuracy.
The rubber came loose off my legend C so I sent it in for repairs, garmin sent me a different unit and this one seems just as good for reception.
of course since the new X models came out things have changed. only the 60/76X models get the sirfIII chip, so these should be much better than the legendCX and the vistaCX.

I guess a better indoor test would be to hold the unit improperly, if I don’t have the legendC screen up, I will loose signal. Maybe a 60/76X tested indoors held upside down

This was the first time that I have done a sudoku puzzle, needless to say the puzzle took me much longer than 3 minutes to do. LOL
