YES to all your questions. when selecting area maps in mapsource that you want to send to your GPSr, after you select all the city select you want you just have to switch mapsource to topo and select the areas you want of topo. then send to your GPSr… thats the easy part.

it is kind of a buried menu in the GPSr where you switch maps. I have a legend C but the menus are pretty much the same as the 60c.
when on the map screen, hit options, select setup map, highlight the I icon(i with circle around it)and hit the option key again. in that menu you can show and hide any mapset.

with topo and city selectV7 installed you can’t see topo without hiding city select. also I really hate how buried this change is so i emailed garmin about it…. they said I’m not the first person to say that and that they were working on a change in one of the newer firmwares to make switching maps easier.

in reply to: Looking For A Few Good… Beta Testers #1744642

I would be willing to put your new site though its paces….
I have a machine running both xphome/ubuntu linux. I use firefox with both but also have opera. if you need to test anything in linux I am more than happy to.
I have done some software beta testing so I am pretty good at finding problems and figuring out what user action created it. I can also take a screen capture in either linux or windows.
    I’m on highspeed internet

in reply to: About to buy GPSr #1758883

as mentioned before the explorist 100, 200, & 300 don’t have any pc connectivity from magellan. but there is a cable you can buy if you already have one of these and want to add a pc connection. it uses a port under the batterys, so you have to remove them to use it. http://pc-mobile.net/mex100.htm

the explorist 210 came out back in november and comes from magellan with a USB connection, base map, and their geocache manger software.(oh and it still uses AA battterys) It only has 24mb for map storage but this is pretty decent for the price. you can find one online for just above $150.

EDIT: I should also add that I don’t know how good that site showing the cable is, they just had some good images of it. you can find them on ebay if you really wanted one.

    Traditional = Geocache
Multi = Stadium (kind of looks like 3 flags)
    Event = Bar
Virtual = Bell (kind of looks like the geocaching.com virtual)
Web Cam = Live Theater (smile and sad face)
Mystery = Information (as in need more info)
    Earth = Airport
Micro Cache = Medical Facility (they can be painful after all)

I do the exact same thing with a twist. download the free program from garmin called ximage. with this you can upload a custom set of icons to your gps, I found some online that are cache type icons.
there is a trick to getting gsak and your gps to know what icons to use, you need to create a text file in the gsak folder called garminother.txt

in this file you need to tell gsak this icon is this one in the gps.
    EXAMPLE of garminother.txt
    Custom 0 ; cacheV
    Custom 1 ; cacheT

one last step, when you go to send waypoints to your gpsr, you need to change the gps symbols to reflect the garminother.txt

now when you send waypoints you will always get the cache type for the icon. I prefer this to the open/closed treasure box. this is by far a compleat explanation of how to do this, but if anyone wants to know more feel free to ask.

EDIT: I made a simple howto and zipped my custom icons, I posted the file online so if anyone is interested I could post a link.

in reply to: Newbie FAQ: GPSr bells and whistles #1758849

I will throw the explorist 210 out there as an option. we had one for a few weeks and it was a great unit for the price. it has magellans geocache manager software and a USB connection to the computer. it also has 22mb of storage for detail maps.

If I had to choose between the etrex legend(grey scale) and the explorist 210, I would choose the 210 every time. the main reason is the newer receiver is way better under heavy tree cover.

I do also have to add I like our legendC better than the explorist 210, and its only about $50 more for the legendC.

in reply to: Caches along a route #1744552

the way I have found to do caches along a certain route is using google earth with the geocaching plugin.
when you click each cache in google earth, the popup box gives you the option to either view online or bookmark it. after bookmarking all the caches we decide to do, I just go to manage bookmarks on geocaching.com and have them send me a pocket query of the bookmark list I created. the nice thing about the bookmark list you can always have them send you another pocket query closer to when you leave so it is easy to update.
I open these planned trips pocket query in gsak as another database so the waypoints are not always in my gpsr.

I think a way to generate money is a great idea, but a premium mebership is not the way to go. Instead when you sell items(geocoins, ect) why not just charge more for them? seems that other sites are charging more for there coins by at least $4.

The only reason I pay gc.com for a premium mebership is so I can get GPX file format instead of loc. Yes there are other premium features they offer, but none that really matter to me. I can’t think of anything the WGA could do that would make me give them money too.

In short all this would do is help create more of a clique factor within the WGA. Why not just leave the group as a whole and find some other options to generate funds?

all the post here have been great! very interesting that jeremy Irish was the one to archive that listing. also note if you click the owner profile for that cache that it also links to jeremy….. hmm maybe he is the one who placed it?

If Im ever in the area I will for sure do Pike Powder Hike, never been to the park but looks like a cool place. anyone know of any other caches that have been around for awhile feel free to share.

in reply to: GSAK – You get your $$ worth #1760807

I don’t know of any software that can do everything this can, for money or for free.

If all a person needs is to upload waypoints, there is lots of free options out there. for me gsak is worth the money. It can do so much more than just uploading waypoints, but I will say you do need to get over some initial confusion when using it.(since there is so much info in front of you)

EDIT: I noticed a few weeks back that gsak now has a forum of there own. http://www.gsak.net/board/

on the forum you could get updates/bug fixes (beta)and have new features even faster than these final public releases. of course you might run into trouble with beta software having a new bug. It’s amazing how fast Clyde gets updates out when something is added or a problem is found.

in reply to: Announcing cache hides on threads #1760847

I totally agree with you about this topic, as I said in my first post. the real problem with this post(and all like it) is the fact that you feel it’s needed to point out EVERYTHING that isn’t the way you like it, in a rude fashion. does it really matter where people put there thread?

guess it just seems that when it comes to the way the message board is used, I would just leave it up to the admin’s to decided to point people in the right direction, or as I said before a nice, kind post on the topics in question would be quite alright.
on the geocaching.com forum topics get moved by the admin all the time so they are where they belong. is this not possible here?

for me I never even look to see where post are located. after getting to the message board main page I just click the view todays active topics button below the WI-geocaching icon in the upper left. (boy this link should be a bigger button) http://wi-geocaching.com/cgi-bin/ubb/search.cgi?action=getdaily

    [/B]

I could have sent a private email about this but I think this is relevent to everyone. everyone agrees that they want to hear new ideas and opinions. its the way it comes across that people are taking so bad. people should really think about how they sound to others.
think about what you post, if you removed the “Contrary to what certain small minds may think” you would be eliminating quite a few of backlash posts. reading this sentence alone makes others think poorly of you.(my half way nice way to say it makes you sound like a B____H)If you really are here to just ask opinions or to bring something to everyones attention, then editing out the negitivity should be an easy thing.

in short instead of starting a new thread just as a backlash to things that you don’t like(are you the geocaching/board police?), wouldn’t have been easier to just post a reply on the topics in question to point these newcomers in the right direction?

    EDIT:
after further reveiw of all the post on this thread I have not seen anyone that was being rude toward you in any way. so it looks like the small minded remarks were truly unnecessary.

I agree totally with this, I answer the same.

in reply to: Announcing cache hides on threads #1760833

I would totally agree that the Recommended Caches page is the best place for these posts, but also think it really doesn’t matter since there isn’t a high volume of post on this forum anyway. any threads that gets more people participating in this forum is a good thing.

The thing I really like about people posting new listings in threads is I get to see caches I would probably have missed searching geocaching.com with my zipcode. doesn’t mean I am gonna run out and put on 200 miles on my car and do them, but still nice to see.

in reply to: GSAK to Garmin Legend C #1741142

I have the legendC and also use gsak. In GSAK, go to GPS, setup, now in the box that opens set the brand to garmin and check the box to use USB.
if you are still having problems I would make sure you have the USB driver for the legendC installed(will be on the cd that came with it)

another option if you need the USB driver is to download it from garmin. http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00358-00
