its really funny how old news gets picked up and made new again. this story was all over the GC.com forum at least a month ago.(maybe even two)
if the search was working on the gc.com forum, there was more photos and info about this.

EDIT: the tech news site digg.com has the same story up on the front page tonight, linking to CNN.com

ok that makes more sense, the only waypoints still listed on Buxley’s are the ones also listed on navicache.

either way I’ll stick with downloading waypoints to see them on the maps I choose.

i tried Buxley’s site before but never got into it. since i heard you mention navicache site i thought what the heck I’ll check it out…..
just as buxleys is never all that current, navicache site missed allot of caches.

basicly google earth with the geocaching plugin does the same thing as these sites, but the plugin is made by geocaching.com so i don’t think its gonna be shut down for awhile. some areas without map overlays don’t look all that great, but it does show caches on the map without having to download any waypoints.

I bought one of these awhile back for my meridian gold, and have been really pleased with it. after buying my legend C, I was also glad to find it also fits that too!

i don’t solely rely on this, i use it in compo with the standard lanyard mount so it still hangs right around my neck.(also less stress on one point at a time)

    great item!

don’t know if you noticed, but garmin now has the manuals for all the new models listed. you could at least check out things out while you wait to get it. http://www.garmin.com/support/userManual.jsp?market=3&subcategory=All&product=All

This is the only complaint that i ever hear about the 76 series. it just makes sense that the buttons would be below the screen. I have never used a 76 model but it seemed to me that you would have to use it two handed or have part of your hand on the screen when reaching the buttons.

also now with these new models there is no reason other than the 76 floating to get the more expencive model. you can add a larger memory card to the 60 series and have the same thing.

that depends, which legend do you have, the blue legend greyscale or the legendC color model? the reason i ask is because the the color model supports autorouting but the original one don’t. which means that if you have the blue legend it wouldnt be worth it to buy city select.
also a side note, it has been rumored that garmin is discontinuing city select. they are replacing it with city navigator(which currently in V7 region sizes are too large for most gpsr with low memory)
it has also been rumored that this summer they will release Version 8 of city navigatior and have the map segment sizes the same as city select.
I would beleive the rumors because if you look at a few online retailers, most don’t have city select as a stand alone product anymore. you can find it in the auto navigation kits still though.

i guess i could sell me legendC to get one of these new models.
when we bought our legendC we paid $250 from tigergps.com. about a month after that garmin lowered the price so at tigergps you can currently buy the legendC for $209.

what i am getting at, is that at least for the vista/legend CX the price is actually the same as what garmin was charging a few months ago for the regular legendC/vistaC.
tigergps is taking preorders for these new models and they all are about $50 more than the original models.

kinda sucks for me, because i bought my legendC less than three months ago.

in reply to: What have you heard about Terracaching? #1741077

i joined terracaching awhile back but never found any caches because i would have had to drive 100+ mile round trip just to find one.
also i have a big issue with the sponsorship that is required to be a member. you have to get two sponsors before you can search for caches in your area. more than once now i have had someone revoke my sponsorship because i havn’t been active.(even as little as a month) what really sucks if i don’t have two sponsors, the people i have sponsored get pulled too.(apologise to the wisconsin cachers i sponsored that fell victim this way)

when i said that the reason i wasn’t active was because there were no caches in my area i was told to go out and place some.

so in short by design terracaching will fail, they made it more of a social thing requiring friends to be involved in the sport. the basic idea behind it is great, only quality caches, with a voting system. oh ya and they have virtual and locationless caches, for the people who like those.

in reply to: GSAK – waypoint icon #1741074

also, I wanted to say that I used gsak well over 100times and after clicking the send waypoints button I had never really looked at the box that pops up to closly before i clicked the send button again. I totally missed the change button.(where you change icon settings)

I should have seen it, wonder what else I’m missing?

in reply to: GSAK – waypoint icon #1741073

this isn’t what you asked but i wanted to say you can do some really cool things with gsak.
in my legend C i really wasn’t a big fan of the geocache mode because basicly all it did for me was give me the ability to mark caches as found. the down side is every cache has he same icon.
you can have custom icons in the legend c, you have to upload them with ximage program from garmin. so i got ahold of a bunch of cache type icons(you can make your own but why bother when there out there for free).

gsak has all the cache type icons already, but you have to make a text file called garminother with the data telling gsak which of it’s icons is which custom waypoint in your gps. now when i send waypoints over i can see my cache types, not just open/closed treasure boxes. the down side the unit see these as a regular waypoint so you cant mark anything as found. this isn’t a big deal for me since i never do enough caches in a given day to get confused.

you can find out more info about doing this searching the geocaching.com forums
(the search feature is down on there right now it seems)

Actually I think this post was trying to have the hider look at there own caches, so I see no problem with calling ones own caches lame. To be able to recognise that the cache is lackluster in some way is actually a good thing for everyone, don’t you all want to leave people remembering there experience at your cache for along time?

there may be more people caching this way than you think, one of the caches i achived had at least 10 logs in the book without logs online. this is great if they want to do it that way, but for me it makes it easier to remember the caches ive done and check back on them to see if others are having as much fun or trouble as i had finding that cache.

if people want to play for numbers GREAT! for me its all about location/hide quality, numbers are just a side effect of the fun i have had.
