i was really just curious if this icon was something that was thought about, but it is really nice to see some of the ideas.
since the michigan coin icon changed from a coin to the michigan geocaching organization icon well after i got it, this may be something that can be done after the coins are out too. seems like it would probably be a icon of wisconsin of some sort so you would know what type of coin it was by the icon.
also i wouldn’t think it would cost more to do either. seems like you would probably just sumbit choosen design to use, and it would have some size/type file it would have to be.they just used their organizations icon as seen on their website http://www.mi-geocaching.org/index.php

for me it’s about the place the cache brings me. i remember every cache i’ve been at, the sights smells, how wet & muddy i got, even the food i ate afterward. for me this is what it all about. BUT i will say for others it seems it is about the numbers, here is two examples.
i placed two caches in one park(now archived) one was 75ft from parking, the other 500ft. the one that was closer got twice the visitors. another example is to look at any multi cache, these rarely get logged in comparison to regular caches. it is sad that more people don’t take the time to enjoy a good multi, it makes you explore much more of an area and see places you would have probably missed if the cache would have been a regular one. I am not trying to fuel a flame with my post, this is just an observation.
for me numbers are the side effect of all the long hikes i took, thorns ive walked through, and places i’ve been. caching has shown me some really cool places i probably would have missed if not for the cache placement.
here is an example of a place caching took me that i would have drove right by and missed, probably thinking as i drove by “this town sucks theres nothing to see here!” (GCQ759).[This message has been edited by hogrod (edited 10-09-2005).]
that is a cool trick with dragging the GPX file onto the desktop icon! I was just wondering how many of you set up the “get data via email” function in gsak. this seems the best way since geocaching.com is emailing your the file anyway.
i set up a gmail account just for this(and for my geocaching.com contact email)
under the file menu, click get data via email and will open the setup page. is pretty much the same as setting up a email account in outlook or similar program. once you get it setup it makes getting new GPX in gsak a simple 2 second process.[This message has been edited by hogrod (edited 09-21-2005).]
i agree that using gpx files with GSAK is the way to go…. but if you have a few minutes of time you can add even more info to the loc file with gsak.(or even add info to the gpx) it even gives you the ability to add pictures/JPEG sreenshots of maps.
all you have to do is highlight the cache you want to edit, and right click it with your mouse and goto add/change/delete note.[This message has been edited by hogrod (edited 09-20-2005).]
i have never used this site much, have always found other ways of doing this. i really don’t like how this site lists archived caches.
we use GSAK to manage our waypoints, and it is really easy to export a file of all the caches we have downloaded. i like to see my caches on MS streets and trips 2005, google earth, mapsource, and usaphotomaps.quote:

for most magellans, with the unit off hold the power and menu button to reset the unit. problem with that is youll loose all your waypoints that your trying to save. there are quite a few topics about this very same thing on the geocaching.com forums. so i would say try searching on there to get more info. one thing that you could try is try uploading waypoints to a differant program…. this might work. sorry can’t be more help, sold both my meridian golds and bought a legendC and never looked back

also down here.
i put one of these tags for my geocoin in the bag with the coin, that way people would know where it wants to go. I have picked up a couple of these “tag someone elses bugs” and thought it was nice of the last finder to do so(minus there name on back).
my problem with the couple of bugs i found that were tagged by a person other than the owner was that they also seemed to put a strong dose of perfume on them too. opening the cache they were in almost made me sick, let alone the drive home with them…..
when i walked in the door all i could think of was my girlfriend was gonna think i found another woman and just said i was “going caching”I have been to three Cemetary caches, and have always tried to remain respectful. two of the cemetarys were old rural cemetaries in the woods off the beaten path, with few/no visitors. I felt i was honoring them by visiting these places, since they have long been forgotten. The other one was a well kept and frequently visted cemetary and was much larger. three cars came as we were searching, but since this one was a virtual cache requiring me to find the date instead of a container i didn’t feel that we were in anyones way. we just walked up to the civil war soldiers grave, wrote down date and left. now i could see a problem searching all over for a container in a high traffic cemetary like this.
guess there is a good use of a virtual!another great deal for mapping software for pocket pc is go out and buy Microsoft streets and trips 2005, the pocket pc version is also on the PC disk and when you install on your computer it asks if you want to also install pocket pc version. the down side is you have to make small map areas but you can export a pocket streets and trips file from GSAK and have your caches listed on the streets and trips map(also has allot of points of intrest)
we purchased a cigarette lighter charger on ebay for both our magellan meridian and our pocket PC(combo charger data cable). this can also be used to get a GPS signal in pocket pc so on streets and trips will show loction driving down the road.
pocket pc’s are also really cheap on ebay, can get a really nice one for $150.(also check best buy so you can use them alittle before you buy) most have CF or SD card slot for expanding memory, so you can put as many cache listing in as you want.
I would agree if you can find a cheap palm on ebay for $20+ you can’t go wrong, but looks like no deals right now.i can only speak of what i have used…. i have used a pocket PC(hp device) with gpxview or gpxsonor installed to read my cache info on the trail. i have never used the palm though i have heard that the cachemate software you use on there is slightly better.
on a side note i installed pocket adobe acrobat so i could read PDF files with it too…. this is great since you can Download maps of all wisconsin trails and parks at this site http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/maps/
another cool thing we use our pocket pc for is we use usaphotomaps and get aerial photos and topo JPG files(screen shot photos) and are able to view these while we are out.
we have a WiFi (802.11b) carfd in our pocket pc and can use internet in allot of locations we are at. this unit also has a blue tooth connection(wireless connection to devices), though we have never used it. you can use blue tooth GPS receiver and with the right soft only have the pocket pc for all you caching.

I am new and I will admit that we logged all three of our caches as finds. this was not in any way to help our stats, I hid the caches and let the rest of the team go search for it. we talked it over and felt that yes our team hid the cache but only one of us actually new of its location. so the majority of the team had indeed found a new cache. maybe we were wrong, but nobody ever said a thing.
