Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx taking a price cut at many stores…. wonder if there is a connection.
That price drop might be related to them starting to use a different GPS chipset in the 60 series, I’ve seen a few post on the geocaching.com forum where its now using some new MTK chipset now, not a Sirf III.
I also think these numbers are very off, most cachers don’t read the page at all. This even includes some people with lots of finds who should know better.
On my old cache Reuben’s Cave I was shocked at the amount of people who would come from the wrong side of the river. the cache page included an additional waypoint for parking coordinates. The funny part is the parking was at the end of Reuben’s cave dr. you would think they would have at least looked at a map & common sense would kick in! nope.
Then there was the joker who failed to see the attribute for hunting(no one looks at these either), failed to see the warning on the cache page, or the description that the cache was located on public hunting grounds. He emailed me unhappily when he ran into a hunter in the woods & posted a pretty funny/moronic log. I had to add a MUCH larger red warning on the cache page linking to the DNR hunting schedule.
I’m sorry people if you don’t read the page you have nothing to complain about, you got yourself into these situations with your shear laziness. I mean really, how hard is it to move your eyes for a few seconds!
I read not only the cache page but the some of the logs too. On the really good caches(ones with lots of photo’s are usually a good indication) I actually read every log & look for additional waypoints that might help me make the find.
I would really like one of those fancy chargers, but can’t justify the cost. at 40+ dollars i could buy Allot of batteries and standard chargers.
I have been using rechargable batteries since the 1980’s, things have improved greatly. some of my Rayovac Hybrids are over 2 years old and the still hold almost as much as new.
Before these I used Rayovacs old rechargeable & after 6months they weren’t any good. I also had just as poor of luck with the energizer rechargeable.
The only other “hybrid” style battery I have tried was the Duracell precharged, but after a year they don’t seem as good as the Rayovac Hybrids but still pretty good.

Ah… I actually caught a few of those, but that one slipped by.
GC3740 has logs going back to 2002, so that one is a little more reasonable. 😕Not sure about that one, since it’s not in my county. 😉
I believe this is the oldest cache in Green County (GC6670) placed in 2002. There is an even older cache(Placed in 2001) about a half mile north of this one, but I believe it’s just over the line into Dane County.

Decided to take a look at the list and see the oldest cache in my county…. well the one listed as oldest is actually one of the newest! (GC1QW6E)
Looks like the owner has listed the cache as being place in 2001, not 2009. I sent the cache owner a quick & friendly email so hopefully they will correct it.
The owner changed the listed date after I emailed him, so now you’ll have to find the correct oldest cache for Green County.
Another Vote for the Rayovac Hybrids, I use them in my 60Cx and get around 15-20hrs of use(WAAS on, no battery saver mode).
The only difference with the hybrids and normal rechargables is there ability to hold a charge over a longer time.
Normally rechargables loose upto 1% of their charge daily just sitting on the shelf, so you need to have them freshly charged when heading out. I think the hybrids are hold 80% charge even after 6months.Decided to take a look at the list and see the oldest cache in my county…. well the one listed as oldest is actually one of the newest! I gave Firefox the ol’ college try but it didn’t have native support for Google desktop and that’s where I live from a work standpoint. (I am only semi-retired.) So I rolled back from IE 8.0 to IE 7.0 instead.
You need to update your google desktop software, It does work with firefox.
Just noticed the other post about this, strange I didn’t notice it when I posted. I always use the “View posts since last visit” link, but still missed it.
Either way great to see some positive geocaching in the news.
Here is a link to the discussion about these new models on the geocaching.com forum.

Safari also has this private browsing mode as well. I don’t know if IE or Opera have it.
Don’t know about Opera since I haven’t used it in along time, but IE8 does have a private browsing mode. In IE under the tools menu select InPrivate Browsing.
I like using private mode when purchasing things online, that way my Browser doesn’t remember my card number, but I can have my browser set to save all other unimportant info when using it in normal mode.
I should have also said I had one issue after I first upgraded, I went to read a few stories on digg.com, and allot of the comments had some of the text underneath other text.
I assume this was caused by old cache of the page( I was reading the page before the upgrade), When I hard refreshed the page(Ctrl+R) everything displayed correctly, and even seemed to be using a much easier to read font. Thanks for the heads up! I had tried the beta but the final product feels much nicer(faster). I really like that they added a private browsing mode like google chrome has(no history is kept on PC). It can be found under the tools menu.
I would recommend checking out the release notes to see what else is new & make sure none of the knwon issues will cause you any problems.

how do you set it up with custom icons?
I don’t remember the exact file type & size file you need for custom icons, but you can find a set of Caching Icons here that will work.
http://www.thepropers.com/geocaching/60SeriesCustomSymbols.htmAll you need to do is find the icon file you want to use and name it the same as the .GPX or .CSV file & put it in the same folder. then you just upload normally & the POI loader takes care of everything.
Slightly off topic, you can also use these custom icons when marking waypoints on your 60Cx(so you can have cache type icons). you need to use garmins Ximage software to send the custom icons over to the unit: http://www8.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=545

What version are you using and where did you find it?
I test the newest version for windows today, which is 2.5.3. It throws an error when I try to transfer to my card reader or my 60Cx.
The last version that works for me is 2.4.2, It can be found here: http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/agree.html
Just look for the file named “POILoader_242.exe”.
I have a folder with multiple .GPX files and some Garmin .CSV files. I also have custom icon files for each one. This setup might be part of whats causing the issue for me, either way the older version works.
