I really like the idea of having more attributes to choose from, but the real issue is not everyone uses them. I would like to see attributes use a requirement for submitting new caches.

The base map sucks. Instead of spending more money right away you can look into some of the free maps that people have made here:
    http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/

The last two Garmin GPS I bought came with Mapsource Trip and Waypoint Manager CD, you need to Install this before you can Install any of these custom maps, since you need Mapsource Installed first. Here is detailed instructions for using these maps. If your GPS doesn’t come with the CD like mine did, I think there is another way to get Mapsource installed mentioned in this how too below.
    http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-maps-on-my-garmin-gps-unit/

None of these free maps autoroute Like Garmins City Navigator does, so if you need those features you’ll end up buying maps eventually anyway.

I’ll start off saying when vista first came out I tried it for a week on my laptop but ended up going back to XP because I had so many problems using my everyday software. My PC also felt very slow with Vista.
I tried Vista again a year later on the same laptop(with SP1) and was really impressed at how things had improved, I’ve been running Vista ever since.

I’ve tried The RC & must say I wasn’t that impressed. I think MS is rushing this product to try and combat all the bad press Vista has had, when in reality Windows 7 is so similar to Vista it will have just as many complaints if not more.

I wouldn’t upgrade a PC to windows 7 when it comes out(especially since Im already running Vista), but if I was in the market for a new PC I would have no problems running it.

If a cache gets a vote from someone outside the region where the cache is located that vote counts for 3.

The method I mentioned above would work exactly this way, except in the SE WI were most cachers live and the cache would already be getting allot of Visits/votes your vote would only count as one.

in reply to: Painless COTM Improvements #1907207

I don’t think the state should separate into regions and have separate voting & winners, but there is an alternative. Since the Cacher/population Density is Primarily in SE WI why not make caches located in these areas votes not count as much?

With this method no matter where you live in the state your vote counts the same, its where the cache is located that decides. Obviously we would have to come up with some fair system, but I’m going to use the example of a 3=1 vote.

If a cache in NW Wisconsin gets 10 votes and a cache in SE Wisconsin gets 30 votes I would say that’s a tie under my purposed method. This seems totally fair since 3X the people will visit the SE WI cache, not because it’s more popular or a better cache, but only because there is more cachers living there.

This would almost guarantee seeing winning caches start popping up all over the state, Which would make COTM much more useful for everyone.

I looked to download the updates for the Colorado, and they have not updated the software since December, even though they have updated the Oregon a number of times. I wonder why Garmin is not updating the Colorado as often?

Garmin has had allot of issues with the Colorado’s hardware, so updating the unit software wouldn’t fix all the issues. I have a feeling this model will be on the back burner and only receive a few updates until it is finally discontinued.

A great example of how many problems they were having is the fact they released the Oregon models within a few months of the Colorado release. This has never happened with a garmin handheld model before, they usually only release new models a year or two after the a new models initial release.

How can you make this popularity contest even more restrictive and cliquey? Keep submitting premium member caches so not everyone can do or even view the caches that are nominated or win.

I stopped giving groundspeak money for being a premium member, I usually do less than 40 caches a year so It ended up being like a $1 a cache which was not worth it. I was a premium member for years, bought travel bugs, shirts, ect. so It’s not like I haven’t shown my support.

I can see only one reason for making a premium cache, to keep the traffic down in sensitive area. I keep noticing more and more of these useless restrictive caches showing up where they are completely unnecessary & could just be a regular cache.

    Awesome!

This happened to me before, took me a bit but here’s a link to the thread I started back then.

While Searching for my old topic I noticed Lostby7 had the same thing happen a few months later.

Not to steal this thread, but just what does one DO with the “Project Waypont Function”? I have it but more or less ignore it.

All Projection really does is gives you the ability to make a waypoint an exact direction and distance from any point.

There are quite a few Multi-caches that have a waypoint or two you need to use projection to find.
I guess a real world use would be if you wanted to stay on an exact Compass bearing, you could just keep projecting a waypoint on that bearing & as you reach each projected waypoint you just create another farther away. I’m sure this could be used in search & rescue, Boating, surveying & more.

    in reply to: cordinates #1906559

yet another option I have used in the past, you can download the free program Fizzycalc(formerly geocalc) and use its built in projection.

    in reply to: cordinates #1906557

If you have your GPS manual I believe you are looking for the projection function.
You can set a specified distance and compass bearing from a waypoint and the gps will make a new waypoint in that direction/distance away.

The steps will differ for doing a projection with every model, but on my 60Cx it goes as follows: find button, select waypoints(or geocache), in the list of waypoints select the one you want to project from. When you get to the screen that give the waypoints details(name, note, coords, ect.) press menu again & select project waypoint.
Now you need to put in your compass bearing, distance & unit of measure for the projection & hit goto to finish making the projected waypoint.

I’m guessing this is one of the newer Magellan Triton 400 models as it came with the TOPO! Explorer by National Geographic. I have no experience with these models but do know they have a very helpful forum dedicated to the trition series.

Another interesting feature (I’m not sure if this is unique to the Oregon)….the cache pages it loads into the unit includes several of the last finder logs…BUT it also includes all logs you yourself have posted on that cache even if it was a couple of years ago…pretty cool. I had DNFd a cache twice over a space of three years and my attempts showed up along with the last couple of finders logs.

That’s a very cool feature. I notice the Delorme PN-40’s paperless caching feature works with the Delorme Send to GPS plugin, I was wondering does the Oregon models also give you cache info using garmins Cumminicator plugin(send to gps button)? They don’t with my 60Cx but I thought it might be different with a model that supports Paperless caching.

More info on the PN-40 paperless:

This has been discussed before on here:
    http://wi-geocaching.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=8663&highlight=communicator

The send to GPS button located on every cache page works on Windows or Mac. You need to have the latest Garmin Communicator plugin installed, which can be found here:
