I live on the Southside of Milwaukee, aproximately 60th and Lincoln.

I believe this is in Team Outdoorsman’s backyard. If he can’t help, I’m fairly close (80th and Oklahoma) and could lend a hand if needed… after the campout of course. 😉

There are an amazing number of geocachers here on Milwaukee’s south / southwest side. I believe we still have more WGA members from the 53219 and 53227 zip codes than from any others in the state.

For the PDA’s, all the caches will be in the “to do” list. You see a list of caches. When you look at he details for any particular one, you will get all the info. You can then “check” the box indicating your find. This works for Palm, but I don’t know if we have PDA product for the Pocket PC crowd.

Brian, you’re so old skool… put down the stone tablet and chisel. 🙂 I don’t think we’ve had a todo list file for at least the last two events? (Although we could make such a file if there is interest.) We will have Palm PDAs with the cache information in Cachemate and can “beam” the info to your Palm PDA.

Regardless of what GPS unit or PDA you own, we will do our best to get it loaded with the cache information. If you have some funky technology or are some sort of control freak who wants to manipulate the data before using it, we can give you the raw GPX file (copy it to a memory card or memory stick) the day of the event.

Are the new perms. going to be download-able on the day? Or am I gonna have to bring my laptop and cell-card from work to get the info?

We will have all the permanent caches in the set of waypoints that we download on Saturday morning. We will probably also have a permanent cache “sheet” with basic information about each permanent cache… which should be sufficient for these caches, since they are not puzzles or anything complicated.

Zuma (and the rest of the Campout Committee) has access to the coordinates for these 3 caches. What are the chances that a FTF opportunity will still exist on Saturday morning? 😉 😀

If I can leave my registration / GPS upload post for a couple hours, I’d be in. I’ve found one of the second stage waypoints but never completed it…

Ralph, can we hit your temp caches along the way? They should go pretty quick if you give us some extra hints. 😉

in reply to: cache placement question. #1888945

Could you make one of the multicache starting points a “virtual” waypoint? For example, have them read something off a sign at the park and use this information to calculate the coordinates to stage #2 of the multi. (You could maybe find a sign that has information about the rec center that geocachers would find useful?)

If there are not two physical “things” (containers, tags, etc.) within 0.1 miles you should be OK… at least that is how I interpret the guidelines. You probably want to ask an actual Wisconsin reviewer.

in reply to: Any Way to Group Camp? #1888905

After sorting out some cancellations and last minute additions, we now have room for 4 people in the group sites. (Actually more than that for Friday night only.) Contact me if you are interested…

I came looking for a forum to place a comment … but there is none. The Campout has one, why not the Picnic?

We will make a forum for the picnic right after the campout. Right now, we (the Board) are focused on the campout and don’t want to confuse others by having two event forums going.

Marc, it sounds like you want to be on the Picnic Committee. 🙂 We do have a private forum already set up for that…

Do we know what day the picnic will be yet? I hope it won’t be when we are out of town. 😥

We were waiting to officially announce this until we also had a location selected, but…

The 2008 WGA Geo-Picnic will (likely) be held Saturday, September 13th.

The Board passed the following motion unanimously, taking into account the preference towards a September date shown by the membership in the recent referendum:

The WGA Geo-Picnic was held in the month of September in 2007 while all previous picnics were held in August. The membership was polled and the majority preferred a September instead of an August (59-47) date for the picnic. Therefore:

The WGA shall hold the annual WGA Geo-Picnic on the second Saturday following Labor Day. This means that in 2008 the picnic shall be held on September 13, 2008. The WGA shall attempt to maintain this date for the Geo-Picnic in coming years.

    Bump.

It is not too late to help with cache hiding for the campout. It looks like the weather on Sunday is going to be great so you can’t use that as an excuse not to participate! Feel free to stop by and lend a hand with cache placements (or just to say hi)… someone should be at the park until at least 5pm.

I would hope that the WGA board would agree with my sentiments on this…

I agree 100% with this, which is why I voted against this design even though I thought it was the best stylistically. But this is design that the Campout Committee chose. And we simply do not have the time to rework it at this point or we won’t have ANY shirts at the campout.

I guess the shirts may become valuable collector’s items because they feature an alternative WGA logo that was considered by never officially adopted. Order yours today! 😀

Thanks for noticing my little milestone guys.

I’ve been doing a bit more geocaching lately and attending more events than I normally would. I see this increased activity as just fulfilling some of the official duties of being a Board member (I know, it’s a rough job :)).

Is that 2 PEOPLE? or two “camps”? not sure how the group thing works, but I am 99% sure that we are going to make it now, 2 of us for sure, but it might be 4 total, so how does that work?

    That’s 2 people.

The group sites are essentially just big open areas where you set up wherever, there are no designated “sites” or “camps”. While we could probably cram more tents and people onto them, the DNR limits the number of people we can have at each group site (and they are serious about making sure we have an accurate count because we pay per person).

Hoping to see many more there, especially some of the folks from the WGA board! Would love to introduce you to the attendees, that maybe don’t make it to the campout. 😀

Yes, I’m sure many members of the WGA Board will be there. In fact, the Board has voted to hold the 2008 Geo-Picnic on August 16 at Regner Park in West Bend. It should be an awesome time. We believe there will be no temps for the first time ever at a WGA event and instead local cachers will hide approximately 50 permanent caches in advance of the event. Sure this may seem a bit lazy of us… but after planning and putting on 14 major WGA events (as some folks on the Board have) we are out of ideas and just plain tired.

    [Just kidding! :D]

Is there any more room???? If so, for how many??

After some cancellations, we had 4 spots in the group campsites open up. I’ve reserved 2 for Bunny FuFu (if she ever signs up for the event ;)) so there are 2 left. PM or email me if you want them…
