I’m sad to announce that the group campsites that the WGA has reserved have been booked to capacity. Therefore we are no longer accepting registrations for the event that include group campsite camping. (The WGA is limited to a maximum 60 people on the group sites… this is an inflexible limit set by the DNR.)
If you wish to camp that weekend, you can instead reserve a spot in one of the family campgrounds through the Reserve America website, or contact info [at] wi-geocaching [dot] com to get placed on a waiting list in case some people currently registered to camp in the group sites cancel.
Yes, you can edit or delete a private message that is in your Outbox. If it is in your Outbox it indicates that the person has not yet picked up the message. After the person reads the message it is moved to your Sentbox, where a limited number (100?) of the past messages you sent are stored.
If this gets too annoying, I can disable the ability to make changes like this. Maybe we should have it so you can edit but not delete messages after they are sent? (That way you would at least know who was jerking your chain… ;))
Fellas, you can buy one of these (like I have) if you want a GPS that can be strapped to your wrist:

Foretrex 101Of course you’d lose the color screen, maps, electronic compass and barometer, auto routing, Whereigo games featuring a talking unicorns and animated spooky ghosts, etc. that you’ve become dependent on.
I saw an early prototype of the no hands GPS device in use at the Janboree event and thought it was pretty interesting. Whether it would be practical/useful for geocaching is another story, but getting feedback from geocachers and making improvements seems like a good first step.
I think the ideal no hands GPS would be some sort of glasses that would superimpose GPS information on the actual environment, like a heads up display. It would connect wirelessly (Bluetooth?) to a GPS receiver that you would wear on your belt. Of course it would respond to voice commands (or simply read your mind :)) to make it completely hands free.

I also use a palm for paperless caching. I have yet to try and update that because i am so frustrated with the gps not working.
Is the Palm an old serial Palm that you also plug into COM1? If so, you’ll need to shut down the HotSync Manager or disable “Local” syncing in order to use the serial port to download to the GPS.
I’m assuming this a real serial port on the back of your PC, not a virtual one created by using a USB to serial adapter cable? These adapters can have a number issues…

Was the last day for voting actually the 13th? I just saw this, and went to vote, and got this message.
Open Referendums
No referendums are currently being voted on
Sorry about this.
The close date/time of the referendums was set to 4/14/2008 00:00:00… midnight of 4/13 transitioning to 4/14, or put another way, the first second of 4/14. Next time I will make sure these times are set to something that makes more sense, like 4/13/2008 23:59:00.
If you are still having troubles you might want to try a hard reset. There have been times I’ve encountered similar behavior, usually an application corrupting itself somehow, and fixed things by doing this. Note this will erase the entire contents of the Palm memory (including applications), but a HotSync should bring it all back. This initial HotSync will take a lot longer than normal as all your stuff gets restored.
To perform a hard reset of the Z22:
– Hold down the power button
– Press the reset button
– Continue holding down power button until “Palm Powered” screen appears
– Press Up to confirm the hard resetGood luck… I want all the credit if this cures the problem, but I take no responsibility if it just makes things worse! 🙂

To the BOD. Please re-consider your approach to coming to a new logo design. If you are intereseted in having me persue logo options, I guarantee, 100%, that neither you nor the vast majority of Wisconsin geocachers, will be disappointed.
First, thanks for submitting a great logo design!
Second, I also think it is wise to consider designs from professional graphic artists and/or obtaining professional help in “cleaning up” the logo ideas submitted by members. One site that has been kicked around in the Board forum is 99designs.com. Through this site you can solicit logo concepts from numerous artists. The catch is you have to choose a winner and pay that artist a small fee.
What do others think? Is it fair or right for us to obtain our logo from a professional graphic artist rather than a WGA member? Should we pay someone (potentially hundreds of dollars) for a new logo?

I would like to request that a link to http://terracaching.com and a link to http://navicache.com be placed on the WGA homepage.
Could you define “WGA homepage” Roger? Would this be in the Quick Links block that is always visible on the left hand side of (almost) every WGA page?
We should definitely have links to these other sites in our Web Links module. In fact, I just added them. But I should probably make a new category for them called “alternative geocache listing sites” or something?
Whether a particular web link gets promoted to the “Quick Links” block (listed in the Essential Links category) has always been a Board decision…

I did not receive an “april newsletter”.
See this post. We’re half full after having registration open for less than 2 days.

This whole issue is incredibly ridiculous.
Pointless, pointless, pointless. Did I mention pointless?
Finally something I think (almost) everyone can agree on. 🙂
I wish this whole topic was never brought up (again!). I guess I probably shouldn’t have voted yes to even allow a referendum on this to be held. Let people play the game the way they want to play.

To get back to, or to clarify, the original point of this post, are we talking about somehow prohibiting people from multi-logging events for each temp cache found? That would seem to require a gc.com change which is outside the control of WGA.
What is prohibiting people from logging a regular cache multiple times? Nothing, other than the owner saying that they can’t (for most caches) and backing that up by deleting extra logs if they do occur. The same concept applies to events.
The cache owner or event organizer decides what goes… the WGA could decide to do this for its events, but it could not force this rule on other events held in the state. Therefore we are only talking about what the WGA should do at its events.

Ya know, it’s kind of a mute point until GC.com makes it so you can only log one find/attended a cache/event. How is the WGA going to prevent multiple “attended logs”? …….. Until GC.com changes it’s system, there is now way to stop the practice( At least I don’t think there is…….)
A little help here please. Is this or is this not correct? Other than no temps. being placed at a WGA event?
We would/could prevent this by deleting the “attended” logs of those who log the event multiple times… just as any cache owner can delete any logs they don’t feel are legitimate or follow the rules. I would believe that if the WGA requested no logging of temps that most people would comply on their own though…

Second thing: I’m confused (not everyone has to laugh at once here). While registering for the WGA campout, I read in two different places that temp. caches would be available for the campout AND they are looking for volunteers to hide temp caches at the picnic? So when will we know if they are going to be temp caches at either the campout or picnic?
There will be temporary caches at the Geo-Campout. Whether they will be loggable is not known at this point…
I sincerely hope that temporary caches remain a part of WGA events regardless of what we decide regarding the logging of them. I believe that having temp caches is one thing that sets the WGA events apart from normal meet and greet events.
Temporary caches can be difficult. They can be special or unique things that simply would not work as a permanent cache. They are designed to get people to see a lot of different hides in a short period of time. They highlight unique natural and historical features in a single spot (in the WGA’s case, usually a state park), and by the end of the day you should be intimately familiar with the place.
Temporary caches also create a “shared experience” among geocachers attending an event. You should be bumping into other people out on the trails, hopefully meeting new people and forming ad hoc groups while searching, and you have something in common to talk about at the end of the day (and for years to come).
@manparuby wrote:
The people talking about it said it didn’t matter to them whether people logged them or not, but they would NOT log the temps, therefore, only did a few and went to do permanent caches instead, although stayed to enjoy the company.
If you are going out on your own or with people you already know to find permanent caches in the area an event is being held, that’s OK, but is that really the point? You are much less likely to run into other geocachers. You are not likely to do the same permanent caches as others. You could go after these permanent caches any day you wanted to, right? It seems like the event is just acting as an excuse to get you to visit a certain area for a day.

Can any body tell me how often the members list for the WGA is updated.
Weekly / Monthly ??It is generated dynamically, so as soon as a new member account is activated their name is appears in the list. And if you let your member account expire you will delisted immediately.

Is there a way to block all posts from an individual poster?
I’ve moved your post to the Suggestion Box forum, since it sounds like you are asking for a website feature that we currently don’t have.
I’ve been told by some of my sources that such a feature is called a “Bozo Filter”. And there are some rumblings that it may even be available to some of the elite individuals in WGA society (Board members and such) but is being withheld from the masses.
Do I hear a second for this request for a bozo filter feature? 🙂

Hey, was anyone going to announce that there are some?
I think you just did Marc. 😉
I hate to steal the thunder from the forthcoming newsletter, but four referendums have been posted recently. The Board would like to know the opinion of the membership on the following topics before making some important decisions:
– 2008 Wisconsin geocoins
– Logging of temporary geocache finds at WGA events
– Choosing a date for the WGA Geo-Picnic
– Procedures for WGA bylaws changesGo to the Referendums module and cast your votes before April 14th!
